Not many people have witnessed conditions like we are seeing this December here in the lakes area. After last night (Wednesday), I think the lake skating is done for the season. Wet slush will make the ice a little easier to walk on, but difficult to skate on.
The lakes are in good shape despite a lot of the sketchy reports we are hearing from around the state. I would say we are at about 10 inches on the majority of Gull Lake. Still, questions have been coming in quite regularly about the Brainerd Jaycees Ice Fishing Extravaganza on Jan. 21. What do I think? I think I’m going to win it! We have a few weeks before the big day and a lot can happen between now and then. My thinking is that it will go off as planned. We have great ice conditions on the north end of Gull, and with a few more days/nights of single digits, we should hit the quota.
The best to all of you in 2012.
