Where are the unemployed?
Having been through the drill of trying to get a decent job in Brainerd I may have an answer for you. People are unemployed because most of the companies in Brainerd hire part-time so they don’t pay health insurance, vacation and sick pay, etc. If you hire someone at minimum wage and expect them to be able to pay their rent, health insurance, etc., it’s not really practical. If there’s even one child in the family they’re going to pay daycare which is high. Why don’t you ask, “Why don’t I pay them enough to work for me?”

how about this....if you have 1 part time job and thats cause there is no full time jobs, why not find a 2nd part time job. Not all jobs have benefits to be paid. Instead of griping, why don't you get a couple jobs. There are services that help pay for health insurance like Minnesota care and you can ask for financial aid from the county to help with child care. Fewer and fewer full time jobs offer some of those benefits because they are expensive. Do you know how much money businesses pay to taxes even after payroll? ITS NOT CHEAP!
Hmmm new, really!
Are you serious? I have a part time job, no wait I have 2 part time jobs, whoops sorry there is that other thing I do yes a third job. still scraping by. Now the draw back, the county and Medicare say I make too much income to qualify. kind of a catch 22.

Minimum wage should be $200,00.00 per year unemployment should be $100k per and nothing on earth should cost more than 39 cents. Then everybody would have lots of money, not just those evil 1 percenters. Then the IRS could claim 50% and Michele and Barry could take all the golf vacations they wanted . Call Al Franken and tell him to get on this right away. Love to all - Steve
This letter writer has a point...
...if you work in retail, they don't give you fixed schedules so you can't get a second job and they won't hire you full time because then they have to pay you benefits. What we need are more jobs in the area so that people have options to leave companies that don't meet their economic needs. Unfortunately, the local politicians do a pretty poor job of attracting businesses to the area.
If you don't like the job, it's lack of benefits, or the work
schedule; you have the option of saying NO! Did it ever occur to some people that the reason they cannot find a good job is
1. They think it is below them.
2. They made no effort while in school to get educated, and now they have no skills.
3. They were having so much fun on unemployment that they didn't bother looking for a job until it was too late.
4. Like one of my co-workers who has 3 DUI's, and no car, his options are rather limited.
I found the unemployed, and the disenfranchised!
There all at the fair spending $6 on cheese curds while lamenting that they cannot pay their bills.
Reality for the "good" people...
I am not a born and raised Minnesotan...and don't even talk like one but I am a very well trained man that has family in Brainerd. So..I try and find employment in this area and guess what...all the skills and experience I have couldn't get me a job at the local college! A job that I can do with my eye's closed! The Minnesota job service informed me that one very minor detail disqualified me, one that I could have attained in days. Did I mention that I am a veteran also but this one minor detail locked me out of a full time job that would have kept me in Brainerd with my family. Clearly, someone was positioned for this job and no way did they expect a qualified candidate to apply. Instead, I am working out of country to support my family, no sour grapes here because I will become an employer and will hire those that want to be part of a company and will have the skills to make it happen and will remember my attempt with CLC to simply get a job. There are some really nice people in Brainerd and the potential is large if you would vote the right people in to office but employment in the area has been delegated to friends and family and not to the best qualified. When I come back to Brainerd and open my business then please send me people that want to work and not those that expect to get a job based on "knowing" someone.
