About a week ago there was a Vox Pop concerning stolen vehicle reports. A request was made to please include a description of a stolen vehicle. Maybe someone in our community would know useful information to aid in recovery. Another vehicle was reported stolen in yesterday’s paper. No description was given. These are large items purchased with a lot of hard earned money. I see many details in other police blotter reports. Why not a stolen vehicle description? My renewal for the paper will soon be due. I need a paper that does responsible reporting.
Editor’s note: The police blotter from local law enforcement agencies does not include a description of the stolen vehicle.
Kids learning about the news
It is nice to allow the subscribers to donate money so that school kids can learn about the news. You should hand deliver it to the English teacher so you’re sure they get the paper. Otherwise, when the teacher comes into the class, she might find it was already took.
Use the building
We went to the open house for the curling club last Sunday. What a nice building. Brainerd is so fortunate to have a lady like Fran Holden to help with the organizations here. People of Brainerd can’t thank her enough. So many uses for this building for all ages. Now people, let’s use it.
Conibear trapping
What a horrible death for these animals and for what? A few dollars. They weren’t meant for domesticated dogs and cats to get into and that probably happens more than we know. Now I wonder if a dog I had got its face mangled in one of these traps. Obviously baiting these animals is going to attract others that aren’t meant for the traps. And why is biting allowed for a trap and hunting bear, but not legal to bait deer?

Add commentgalt, maybe if you subscribed they could afford more staff?
The papers biggest critic logs in, but would never subscribe
and pay for what he uses.
I subscribe and I suggest they charge for on line use. Also the Morrison County Record does not allow anonymous posters. That might clean up the nasty on these forums.
minnesnowda, that would be the end of the paper
Online advertising is pretty big, they need every penny they get and if they start charging for online access, good bye paper.
The Eau Claire Leader Telegram used to make you log in just to read articles and it was free but they quickly changed that when online view totals made online advertisers leave in disappointment.
Galt, well said!
Remember that newspapers are private...
companies that still have to make a profit or go out of business. To many times in this forum is see people critical of what the Dispatch prints or doesn't print without taking into account that they are limited to what keeps them economically viable.
Lifelongresident is correct.
We are a private, for-profit business and compete in the Brainerd Lakes marketplace with direct mail, directories and guides, craigslist, other newspapers (local, regional and national), outdoor advertising, magazines, radio and television and other websites for both audience and advertising.
We can only survive by providing both interesting and compelling content to our readers and supplying advertisers with an audience receptive to their products or services - all while balancing our budget and making a profit.
johngalt:
The truth is both customers are equally important to us - just as with any media company.
Reader/subscribers are important because their desire to know what's going on in their community and surrounding areas as well as their desire for finding out where the best prices are for food and consumer goods provides our writers and advertisers with an audience. The print subscriptions provide revenue to fund the circulation department and a delivery system and their reading habits provide an audience that businesses want to advertise to.
Local, regional and national advertisers (print and online) are important since the fees they pay to advertise to the audience cover the costs of the staffs required to operate the print and online news sources along with the advertising, billing, press and administrative departments. Their sales and services advertising pieces also serves to provide consumer content that an audience looks for.
We required our online readers to register 6-8 years ago and continued it for 3-4 years with negligible initial audience loss and a marked increase in advertising revenue because the registration numbers gave us another source to show how many online readers we had and in which zip code areas they are located. This month (January 2012) we have had to-date - 1,537,136 page views by 223,359 unique visitors to our websites. That's an increase over January 2011 of 233,000+ page views and and nearly 100,000 unique visitors - both very good increases.
If you research current subscription trends among media companies, you will find that some major players are experimenting with a la carte subscription offerings - print alone, online alone or print and online combined in varying degrees. Our company is also experimenting at a couple of their properties with online subscriptions and has several task forces looking into methods for us to succeed in the digital future.
So for the Dispatch it is all
So for the Dispatch it is all about the numbers for advertisers, not what the consumer wants to read. Remember when the newspapers cared about the news?
PS. Hire an editor/proof reader/ 8 year old that can spell, I was reading a few stories yesterday and saw several spelling errors, unacceptable by professionals would you agree? ......Never mind ,as long as you have numbers to show your advertisers you don't need to look smart just keep pretending. And when will news papers/ all media report the new and stop pouring its political agendas on it's patrons?
johngalt, lamigra,
Thank you both for your responses - the compliments and the criticisms. We can only learn how we are doing from the honest opinions of our customers.
johngalt:
Our classifieds have taken a hit from craigslist, facebook and in the case of autos - the shortage of good used vehicles for sale. Other classified categories are doing better. We have an automotive website where you might find a vehicle from the inventory of one of the local auto dealers though - http://upnorthautos.com .
lamigra:
I started the following statement placing our audience first - because that's where I rank them, "We can only survive by providing both interesting and compelling content to our readers ...".
And also, "... both customers are equally important to us ...".
I would agree that there have been spelling and grammatical errors in articles we have published. But for you to suggest - using that one item as the defining measurement - that we don't care about what our our readers want to read, is a stretch. One item it does show, is that we have been attempting to provide the same coverage with a much smaller staff and we need to take a look at what we can do to remedy that situation.
You'll be glad to hear that we have hired a new editor, who I believe is scheduled to start his work here tomorrow.
The Dispatch is not Fox News, or MSNBC either
Just because they do not report exactly what you want, does not make this paper liberal or conservative. I have liberal friends who dropped their subscriptions because they think the paper is too conservative.
I have liberal friends that are tired of Obama caving and reaching across the aisle all the time and getting kicked in the teeth for that. What happened to concensus and civility??
Something to think about: if the liberals think this paper is leaning conservative and the conservatives think it's leaning liberal...
might it not be in the middle? A quandry for the paper because subscriptions drop on either side the minute someone gets 'mad' about a story. (My suggestion: readers - grow up.)
I do not need a lot of national or state news, I get that on TV and on-line from a variety of sources. I do enjoy the local stories and events, just as I do Lakeland Public TV news at 10pm.
I get tired of people constantly dicing the newspaper and still reading it on line, I admit. What's that they say about not buying the cow if the milk is free?
Good comments, Minnesnowda
Naysayers like galt and old disagreeabe are just too negative about anything that is going to benefit this country. The Brainerd paper does an excellent job of printing the news. Some day they may open their eyes (haha).
Snow - Although I agree with
Snow - Although I agree with your basic hypothesis, your conclusion is beyond reality.
"might it not be in the middle?". This simply points out which side of the fence you sit (or that you live in one heck of a fantasy land). I challenge you; count the number editorials published in the BDD written by Dana Milbank and Kathleen Parker (self-proclaimed liberal journalist). Then, compare and contrast that against the number of self-proclaimed conservative journalist published in the editorial page of the BDD. I've done the research and know what the numbers are in the past year, and I can tell you that it's not even close to being balanced. Additionally, you simply need to look at who currently sits on the editorial board and the BDD advisory board.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoy this paper and the reporting of local stories. And, I understand that opinion pages are exactly that - opinion pages. However, to suggest that it is "in the middle" is simply being disingenuous at best.
“What's that they say about not buying the cow if the milk is free?”.
Yep, just like what is said about health care…..”if you think it’s expensive now, wait until its free”
Sometimes editorial writers....
are chosen for one reason and one reason only, they are economical!! Small market media outlets can't go out and grab the top name national people so they end up with the one's they can afford. I get my information from both conservative and liberal sources so I can formulate my own opinion on issues (seems like the truth always ends up in the middle). Is the Dispatch liberal, yes in my opinion they are but I certainly do go to the Dispatch for my national coverage. They do a pretty good job at local coverage with the resources they have.
I don't subscribe
to the Dispatch because I am afraid it will get took.
galt...ha ha...not
If Newt has his way, he will colonize the moon for his conservative friends like you. Wouldn't that be a hoot?
Another Galter...Falter...I missed it?
Say it isn't so...
Nope, real life people
good friends, liberals, who stopped their Dispatch subscription
right along with your conservative friends who think the local paper is 'liberal media.'
Well, it may be compared to Faux News
which is no way 'fair and balanced' - I watch it sometimes to see what they are saying and it's like some alternative reality.
Wow, the Newtee Dance is Mainstream...
Can't wait...Or Not...
I believe every single word
I believe every single word you say. It's when you put them together to form a sentence that I think it's bologna.
LLR
Exactly. Gathering differing views from a number of diverse sources is the key to critical thinking. I think that with all access/24hour news cycle, critical thinking is a lost art.
Minnesnowda,
I'm sure that your feelings for Fox News are the same as my feelings for MSNBC, it just depends on which side of the fence you are on. Once again no media outlet seems to be completely unbiased so you have to gather your information from numerous sources.
Actually, I would suggest
Actually, I would suggest that my feeling towards Fox News parallel that of yours, as does my feelings for MSNBC. However, I will tell you that I watch each of them.....as much as I read from National Review and Huffington Post. Although, I have to CHOKE down MSNBC and Huffington Post material. The fact is, if informed decisions are going to be made you have to gather 360-degree input.
Why is biting allowed
It is the animals right, some do that to escape the trap. Ask fishhead how many feet or claws he has found in his traps over the years of trapping.
If you ment baiting, I do not know the answer, but I am sure a trapper like fishhead can tell you why he baits his trap sets.
What happened to my posting
Why did you remove my posting?
Re: What happened to my posting
45, I think I may have removed it by error and I apologize.
I've returned it to published status.
