Quit blaming the trap

The conibear trap, when used properly, is a fantastic tool to dispatch animals quickly and humanely. The oldest profession in the United States is trapping, and like any other profession, devices are invented to make it easier to succeed. The problem is not the trap, but the individual who is responsible for setting the trap in proper places. There is an education course that is required for beginning trappers to take before they can trap. Quit blaming the trap. When you get into a car accident, do you blame your car?

Who brings more money?

The latest messages from trappers in Vox Pop telling hunting dog owners and others to simply keep their dogs out of the woods while trappers are trapping helps display the strong conflict that exists. Who brings more money to the area businesses, hunters or trappers? Are our local businesses comfortable with telling hunters to stay away when trapping season is open?

BPU

I find it very odd that while my natural gas (heat) dropped 28 percent, my water and light jumped 25 percent with no reason. Has anyone else noticed this type of oddity? What happened to BPU? They already raised property taxes to make any difference!

Further education denied?

Why in the world is a school employee being denied a chance to further his education by the school? There are enough people in this community without jobs that could fill in. You, of all people, should believe in the importance of education. That is why you keep spending money to pay high schoolers’ college courses in the high school.

Who decided?

Who decided to tear down the state hospital? Is it a Department of Human Services decision or did the legislators actually pass a bill which the governor signed? If the legislators did should you not publish who voted for it and who did not?

If you want to know

If you want to know what is going on outside the state hospital, drive by and take a look. It will make you sick. If you want to know what went on inside since 1958, beg, borrow or steal the book “Hanging onto Sanity as State Hospital Staff.” Thousands of people were either employed for treated there.

TV is getting worse

Something must be done now about the rotten trash one has to look at on television. It just seems to be getting worse. Even the commercials are all violence and sex. When is this going to stop? Am I the only one who feels this way? This has got to go.

The oldest profession

is not trapping but prostitution, which, if you are a politician, is the same thing!

I agree. It's not the trap

I agree. It's not the trap it's the regulations and that is what needs to change. Despite all the education dogs are dying. It's not working.

As long as it's legal to set them on the ground our dogs will die.

Jason.Abraham@state.mn.us needs to hear from dog owners and the many responsible trappers who don't gamble with our dogs lives. He needs to know that dog owners and responsible trappers want body grip traps used responsibly and placed 5' off the ground or underwater to protect our dogs.

The DNR can change the regulation and protect our dogs through the rule making process.

I agree. It's not the trap

It was the dog owner. He put his dog at risk the same as an unfit parent. The dog owner was trapping while Fluffy or Penni was allowed to run wild, killing anything it come across including some one's pet rabbit. The dog owner wants trappers to adjust for his mistakes. Dogs have no business being with a trapper which the dog owner claims to be. For a small fee of $10.00 you can be a member of the Minnesota Trappers Association even if you are from another state and claim to be a trapper. Let us get real people.

conibear trap

Try educating the dog owner. They should not let their dogs run wild. A responsible dog owner will be a good one. An irresponsible dog owner will look for an excuse for their lack of responsibility to the dog.

conibear traps

Our dog was recently killed by a 220 conibear set on our neighbors property. It was a legal set, but set with a lot of negligence. It says right in the trapping manual that trappers should take great care when setting them and to be aware of their surroundings to prevent accidental dog captures. People who set these traps are luring animals into the trap and it is crazy that neighbors have a joining property and that the neighbors dog may be lured into to the trap and then killed. My husband has been trapping for 30 years and has never killed a dog. There are plenty of other traps (foot holds) that could have been used. It is unfortunate that we all don't live in remote areas and can do what we want on our property. These conibears are legal to set on private property but illegal on public ground and the simple fact that public property is less then a foot away from private property makes a legitimate reason for stricter regulations in regards to these kind of traps. Five foot above ground or submerged would make perfect sense to me. A child could just as easily be exploring and see a box that looks like a fallen wood duck house and inside sits a set 220 conibear, need I say any more.

Look on page 46

Look on page 46 of the MN Trappers Association Manual and you'll a picture of a PROVEN method of catching fisher and marten. The running pole set shown also catches coons and NO DOGS. The MTA told the legislature that fisher, marten and coon could not be caught off ground last legislative session even though their own trapping manual says otherwise.

The manual also says not to set body grip traps where dogs can reach them because they are lethal traps.

http://www.mntrappers.org/_fileCabinet//trapper_manual.pdf

The trap isn't the problem the problem is the person who sets it on the ground where a dog can reach it. THEY are the problem and can be held accountable in court for all the money spent on the dog and for any future earnings..

Dog Lovers 4 Safe Trapping MN will be supporting a bill that protects dogs and still allows the use of body grip traps.
