Teachers need to quit whining
A recent survey noted the income for a family with a teacher was over $75,000 a year, while a family without one was only $50,000. An article in a Twin Cities newspaper indicated that with benefits, many teachers are making over $100,000. It’s time for teachers to realize they’re making substantially more than the majority of the population. Enough of this “it’s for the kids.” If it is, be willing to take a pay cut so the families of those kids aren’t hurting so badly.
Stop signs needed
Several intersections in northeast Brainerd have no stop signs. Can you say T-bone? Hope no one gets hurt before the city finally wakes up and realizes there needs to be stop signs at all intersections period!
Following Wisconsin’s lead
After reading in your paper what’s happening in Wisconsin, maybe someone from the Brainerd School District administration should research and report to us taxpayers the exact cost of our teachers. My guess is the average instructor in our district makes well over $100,000 per year, especially since they work only nine months. With Brainerd’s high unemployment rate and so many suffering as a result, maybe the district needs to “put on the brakes” relative to any future increase in salaries and benefits. In fact, I think the Wisconsin governor’s on to something and we should follow his lead.
EDITOR’S NOTE: Steve Lund, director of business services for the Brainerd School District, said the average teacher salary in the district is $55,287, excluding benefits. The total average benefit package is $16,481, which includes $11,604 for the district’s contributions to family plan health insurance; $3,062 in contributions to the state pension fund; $1,110 in contributions to an individual retirement account (403B plan); $420 for dental insurance; $187 for long-term disability insurance; and $98 for life insurance. Total salary and benefits for the “average” teacher is about $71,768. If a teacher takes single vs. family insurance, the district’s contribution is $5,388, which brings this average salary and benefits down from $71,768 to $65,552.
Lund said this and most other information is available by contacting the district office. The U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, has 2009 data for the St. Cloud region that lists an average salary for an elementary teacher at $52,620. Ironic
It’s nice to see that CLC, Pequot, Staples-Motley, Crosby-Ironton and Little Falls choose to respect our early presidents, the men who shaped our nation. Maybe Brainerd’s school board members should have some class and venerate the men who guaranteed them their liberty. It’s bad enough to disregard Martin Luther King Jr. Day, but they can’t even honor the men who made the United States? Happy Presidents’ Day, everyone! I’d be happy to celebrate it with you, but I’m legally obliged to spend my day in school learning phrases like “Remember the past.” Ironic? Yes.
Snow removal
Wondering how much money the city of Brainerd received for all the snow plows they sold? Oh I suppose it’s a holiday so that’s why the roads are not plowed in a timely matter!
Regarding the MLK holiday editorial column
Martin Luther King Jr. could be honored and taught about in schools on days other than the federal holiday designated for him. To not observe the holiday and then give students a day off three days later appears disrespectful. Recently many are encouraging that this holiday be a day of service. Perhaps older students could be encouraged and give extra credit to volunteer in the community on this day to help those less fortunate. I believe Dr. King would have liked to be honored in this way.

When the Brainerd School District dishonored Martin Luther King Day, I remained silent because I wasn’t black. When they dishonored Presidents’ Day, I remained silent because I wasn’t an American. Oh, wait a minute. I am an American and I’m outraged. Who will stand with me and speak out to stop the Brainerd School Board from continuing this travesty.

Why does the Brainerd School District not observe these holidays? "Outraged American" should direct his or her frustration in the direction it belongs, and not at Dist. 181. The local Chamber of Commerce's members. The Chambers members want the school year to end as close to Memorial Day as possible and not to start until after Labor Day so that student employee's can work through the busiest part of the year!

Whose Whining?
A few questions, since you seem to have all the facts. How many of those households, without a teaching member, need a college degree to perform their job, or have a college degree? Did the newspaper article take that into consideration? Does the article take into consideration how many years of teaching it took to reach that $75,000 figure? Why should just teachers take a cut "because its for the kids?" What about doctors, lawyers, city workers, county workers etc? Lots of other people are above that $50.000 figure! Why do people, that choose to not spend money on a better education," whine" about people who did and what they earn? Don't we encourage our kids to get a college education to get a better job and earn more money? What about the fact that a high percentage of the most valuable property(lake homes) in crow wing county are exempt from any tax increases from a referendum because the property owners are seasonal!

Teachers' hefty salaries are driving up taxes, and they only work 9 or 10 months a year! It's time we put things in perspective and pay them for what they do - babysit!
We can get that for less than minimum wage.
Let's give them $3.00 an hour and only the hours they worked- not any of that silly planning time, or any time they spend before or after school. That would be $19.50 a day (7:45 to 3:00 PM with 45 min. off for lunch and plan-- that equals 6.5 hours).
Each parent should pay $19.50 a day for these teachers to baby-sit their children. Now how many students do they teach in a day...maybe 30? So that's $19.50 x 30 = $585.00 a day. However, remember they only work 180 days a year!!! I am not going to pay them for any vacations. LET'S SEE....
That's $585 X 180= $105,300 per year.
What about those special education teachers and the ones with Master's degrees? Well, we could pay them minimum wage ($7.75), and just to be fair, round it off to $8.00 an
hour. That would be $8 X 6 1/2 hours X 30 children X 180 days = $280,800 per year. Wait a minute -- there's something wrong here! There sure is!
The average teacher's salary (nation wide) is $50,000. $50,000/180 days = $277.77/per day/30 students=$9.25/6.5 hours = $1.42 per hour per student--
a very inexpensive baby-sitter and they even EDUCATE your kids!) WHAT A DEAL!!!!

You bring up a point that is oft repeated by people who feel the need to defend the salaries teachers earn. The daycare analogy fails when put through the common sense-o-meter. When someone pays a college educated childcare provider $3/hr the cost of food, shelter and utilities are included. Teachers are not solely responsible for building or maintaining schools nor do they feed the students out of their own pocket.
While I am not necessarily opposed to the average teacher making an annualized compensation package of $95,691 (lord knows they work for it) I am wholly opposed to blatant misinformation.

Many jobs with college degrees don't pay $50,000+
I have two degrees and do not make $50,000 a year for 9 months work. I know some teachers use that time off to improve, but many do not.
Many private businesses, including doctors and lawyers, have taken pay cuts during this bad economy. So don't come whining to me.
Let's see - here are a few fields I know where individuals with degrees are not making anywhere near that teacher salary: reporters (very important yet always underpaid) engineers, graphic artists, computer programmers, child care workers (many daycare centers require a degree to work with young kids), dental assistants, paralegals, accountants, human resource managers, marketing managers - need I go on. In this area $55,000+ is a hefty salary.
So I agree with the original writer - quit whining!

There are a lot of people in the military with and without 4 year degrees. Spending a year in a desert, getting shot at and not seeing your family for a year - definitely underpaid.
Pay
I agree, military people are underpaid but still they chose to be in the military. I spent a year in Vietnam, with combat pay, made like $350 a month. Did I whine about it. No, because I enlisted! If I'm a computer programmer and I want to live in northern mn where the going wage is 40 thousand verses living in the metro where the going wage is 65 thousand thats my choice. Should I then [filtered word] about what they make in the metro? No, because it was my choice. Life is about choices!! I'm self employed. Is my business down, you bet, Did I sit and whine about it? No! Instead I used my brain and filled the gap with new customers. Why is it today that if someone's boat is in rough water they want everyone else in the boat with them?

Yes those careers you mentioned do require degrees, but not 4 yr degrees. Most of those are associate's or even diplomas, which on average, don't pay as much as a 4 yr or even Master's.
I'm not saying the pay is fair either way. There are jobs where you can make more money without any degree, i.e. construction.
The reason this district's average is so high is that there are so many who have been here for so long that they're near the top pay. The starting pay in this district is around $35,000. However, how far in debt are these new teachers? Did you know that the semester of student teaching they do isn't paid, they have to pay tuition to do it in MN.
I think people are just putting all the blame on teachers. Show me an article that says some professional in the Brainerd area has taken a cut or a freeze WILLINGLY because of the economy.
This whole system is by no means fair. Teachers (some, anyway) are just fighting to stay above ground.
Those of you who are whining, go out and DO something. You're all talk, no action.

There are many people I know who have lost jobs and taken pay cuts. No, not voluntarily. So why should teachers have a choice? You know the difference here - they are being paid by taxpayers. And as a taxpayer it irritates me that all I ever see is that the schools (teachers included) want more, more, more. It's time to do more with less.

Since when does a day of no school have anything to do with "honoring" someone? Honor past presidents and other notable citizens by learning about them and their accomplishments IN SCHOOL. Secondly, just how naive are those who suggest that a holiday be justified with the promise of those not in school performing community service? LOL !!

As a retired teacher of 35 years there is not way that teachers are paid too much. When I look back at the hours I put in, relating to my job, I was lucky to have been paid a little more than minimum wage. The amount of time spent going over lesson plans, correcting tests, preparing tests, meetings, etc., I could go on and on. If you have not been in the classroom, and had to deal with students 180 days a year, trying to get them to want to learn, etc., you have no idea of what teachers have to go through, and put up with every day.
