It’s interesting to review reader comments in response to Dispatch editorials. Last week’s editorial “Debt ceiling is no big deal — right?” drew a slew of comments, not regarding the debt ceiling/budget but the debate focused on the Affordable Care Act (ACA). I guess readers took their lead from what House Republicans had tried to do – tie the budget to the funding for Obamacare or ACA.
The debate that waged on until the wee hours of Tuesday morning did not yield a solution to the deadlock in D.C. and among readers. Comments made on the Dispatch website by readers to the editorial were interesting:
• minnesnowda commented: “Usual line up of bitter older men who probably have insurance. Many younger people and some still working do not and are happy they can NOW access affordable health insurance.
“Why is that SUCH a problem for those who have ‘got theirs’ already? Everyone should have health insurance because no one will get a free pass, everyone will need it. I dislike paying for the uninsured in ER, that’s not a good deal for them or me because I am paying for their care.
“And yes, if Romney proposed it = fine. That is what the Affordable Care Act is built on. Romney Care. It is a GOP idea, that is until the Democrats decided to sign on.”
• Hercules1944 opined: “I really get a kick about all the sob stories the Obamabrats keep coming up with. Just on the CBS evening news tonight (Sept. 30), the tear jerker gubmint workers were screaming about how it will effect (sic.) them. Guess what? I don’t give a rip. When one out of five people working today is a government worker from the Feds to Municipal level, that to me is one part of the problem.
“Other than the bare essentials like the military, police and fire protection, plus teachers, why do we need all these gubmint employees? Maybe a shutdown will be the best thing to come along since sliced bread.
“Heck, this country was formed and fought a Revolution over being taxed without representation. Look what we have today with supposed representation. Which is the lesser of the two evils?”
• Fair n Balanced chimed in with: “Oh, but, how in the world will the lefter/communists ever get reelected if they force able bodied welfare recipients to start working to feed themselves?
“The whole platform and machine that put Obama in office will collapse upon itself if we stop his maniacal spending.”
Based on reader comments there is little wonder why Washington is so divided. The folks in fly over country are just as divided on the ACA and government spending.
