Lake improvement district and lake association representatives met with the Crow Wing County Board last week to talk about what was working and what hurdles remained as both groups continue their work to keep county lakes healthy.
The fear of invasive species taking over a lake where some families have had cabins for generations is one of the motivations for lake improvement districts to seek authority to tax themselves. The lake people have learned that given current levels of state funding they can’t count on the DNR to spend the money it might take to be proactive in fighting Eurasian milfoil or other invasive species.
In this era, where complaints are often heard that people don’t care enough to get involved, it’s gratifying to observe the efforts of lake association and lake improvement district members.
The lake residents and the county board both have a stake in keeping our lakes free of invasive species.

Even if we don't live on a lake we impact it by our use of coal generated electricity.
Every time we flip an electric switch we pump phosphorus in the air and some of that ends up in the lakes.
Every time we flip an electric switch we pump mercury in the air and some of that ends up in the lakes and the fish we eat.
so we need to just quit using everything
We see how safe nuclear power is in Japan so we better get away from that.
Solar and wind power plants are not made from wind and solar energy, so we better stop producing those. The carbon footprint on one of those plants is HUGE.
Lets all eat raw foods because cooking causes air pollution.
Lets all not wear any clothes because it takes electricity to make clothes.
Lets all plant our own gardens from seeds we sew ourselves. Do not buy any seeds from a distributer because it takes diesel fuel to harvest those and that is not good for the environment.
Do not eat beef, because all those cows farting is causing global warming.
Do not drink any milk for the same reason.
Do not drink bottled water because of the waste of plastic. Since we are on water, do not buy filters because it takes electricity to make one of those. Do not drink your tap water because of all the poison put into it from the air pollution, mercury pollution and what ever else.
And I could rant on and on, but first and foremost, we better kill every single duck, goose, eagle, loon, ospray, heron, egret, otter, muskrat, beaver, mink, deer, turtle and dam up all rivers and streams not to allow fish to move from one body of water to the other to stop the invasive species from spreading.
The last time I checked, the spores and larvae from those exotics are small enough and have the ability to attach themselves on anything. Its too late to stop the spread of invasives like zebra mussels and eurasian milfoil.
You can close down fishing to everyone and every lake will have exotics in it at some point in time
