If they work hard, every Minnesota student
should have the opportunity to go to college, further their education,
and get closer to their goals and the American dream. But sometimes
students in college struggle at the start. They’re away from home in a
new environment. Classes are tougher and distractions are everywhere.

provide services that have proven effective in helping participating
students stay in school, earn the grades they need, and graduate. But
these services are helping only a small percentage of all students who
need them. Colleges may not have the resources, such as staffing, to
identify and connect the students in need with the services available.

why I am encouraging area colleges and community-based non-profits to
apply for individual grants up to $200,000 in College Success Grants
from Great Lakes Higher Education Guaranty Corporation.

2014-15 College Success Grant is intended to provide resources to allow
institutions to identify at-risk freshmen who exhibit warning signs
early in the semester, and connect them with the services that will help
them complete the credits they attempt during their first year of
college, and earn the grades necessary to position themselves for a
successful college career, and a successful life after college.

and community-based organizations located in Iowa, Minnesota, or
Wisconsin are eligible to apply for individual grants of up to $300,000
each for the 2014-2015 academic year. Applications can be found at and are due Jan. 6, 2014.
