As a student trying to get my bachelor’s in psychology, I tend to go to the Brainerd Public Library with my computer very frequently.
I cannot believe how completely technologically and user unfriendly this library is!
There are two tables throughout the whole building with plug-ins, the seats are hard, the tables are directly above the air exchange making it frigid, and one time they had rented out the extra room to a salsa dancing presentation. Seriously, Salsa dancing in a library with the doors wide open.
All I can say is I wish we had a brand new updated library. I believe it is useful to society.

somtimes we don't always get what we want. But we get what we need.
Brainerd Library
As a long time user of the Brainerd Library, I would like to offer its facility and staff(volunteers and paid) a big thumbs up.

If you want a library that is all around wonderful, go to the Hallett Library in Crosby. The people who work there, the resources, the comfort - it has everything. I moved from Crosby to the metro and have never found a library as great as Hallett. It is the best, hands down!!
Nicole
I agree with Motley and Rolf on this one.
A library is meant for books, then they added tapes, videos,
computers and all sorts of extras. Now you want all the creature comforts of a hotel room.
Be thankful for what we have and bring a jacket and pillow to sit on. I've been there many times and haven't experienced your problems.
Unless you want to donate the money for improvements or a new building, then let's appreciate what we have.
The more you get for free, the more you want.
Gotta support Nicole here
The world is changing, younger people are clued in to availability of digital information and rely on it way more than us old codgers realize.
And I see a lot of young people using the library every time I go there. I do know they have increased their digital resource availability, hadn't noticed that they only have a few plug-ins though.
I think the meeting room is totally separated from the library proper though--but if the noise coming from it is loud enough to reach the main library that would be a problem. Not sure salsa dancing is a good fit for the library meeting room!
Brainerd Library
is not meant to be a college library. Try a real college library.
And Hallett is a great community center and library.
I looked into it
That Salsa dancing was courtesy of legacy funds.
Southie, so agree, they must have a library at the local college.
Yes, it is busy and many people use the donated and taxpayer funded computers. The resources there are enough and all that can be funded at this time.
They do accept donations and you can allocate them to the computer fund.
I can see both sides.
But if you want a university style library, then you gotta build a university. If you attend classes at CLC, they have nice options for computer-use and studying.
Unfortunately they don't give those types of resources away, so you need a way to fund them. If you can't fund them, you'll have to get used to the friendly public library.
library
I use the library all the time. I will say if you are looking for a nice quiet place to read or whatever you should move on. Now days the library is full of inconciderate people talking on their cell phones and generally treating it like its just another public area. The staff is great but they have long ago stopped trying to keep order in the place and turn a blind eye to all the distractions going on. From my experience the adults visiting the library are worse than the school kids.
Think about it
Besides donating money to the computer fund, you can donate your time. There are many people that go in there and need help and take up the employees time. Parents aren't always attentive to their children.
If you're not part of the solution, then maybe you are part of the problem. Many people are able to work on their degree
without using the town library. You can do it.
You people aren't fair, the
You people aren't fair, the world must revolve around Nicole and her needs. Have you tried calling Barack and explain to him about your lack of personal comfort? Maybe Nicole, it's time to take a trip to a Children's Hospital and then come back here and tell us how tough your life is. Grow up there Democrat.
Nicole suck it up.
You are not the sole provider of funding to the library. Perhaps studying at home would be better. Not only are you in control, but you limit who has access. Atleast we have a library to use. So is to much to ask to not complain about its perceived inadequecies. This useful tool shouldn't turn into a individuals wish list.
What happened to people stating opinions and not being attacked
What happened to the right for someone to state their opinion about an issue on here without being attacked?
The Brainerd library does serve some users well and others it does not . I have to agree that it needs to be updated however they need funding ...I suppose all these people who wrote a response to Nicole's letter must be funding the library. The college library is good yet can be quite crowded. I think that she can bring a hoodie if she is cold and a chair cushion if the chairs are to hard.
However with that being said maybe this is the best place she had to go and study. I am still trying to figure out how (missionary) turned this into something political.... yet someone always does on here..
Yes, we are funding the library
I think people are irritated that others get free things and still find something to complain about. In this case, it is free wi-fi at the library. If you get wi-fi at home, it cost money.
So you go to the library or a restaurant and get it free but, it does cost them money.
It is just that Nicole in this case doesn't seem to appreciate
what there is. It is adequate and there have been improvements lately.
Thank you Brainerd library.
The Crosby library is also good.
Library
Believe me, I did not mean to put down the staff at the library and it is great for renting books. However, I as a tax-paying citizen I have the right to use the public library and it's ability to accomodate those with their own computers (not taking up time in the limited computers they have available). I will have to look into the Hallett library but it is unfortunate that I have to drive an extra 30 minutes because the Brainerd Public Library needs updating. Also, you cannot access the CLC internet unless you are a student there so that is not an option. And for those of you who say that I do not fund the library, you are right. But I pay my taxes that do fund the library and I do not think it is too much to ask to have a well-run and user friendly library. I have two small children at home and going to a quiet space to study allows me to focus on my work, obtain my degree, and get a better paying job so that I can pay more taxes and fund institutions such as the library. People need to realize that computers are our future and making them difficult to utilize helps no one.
The Salsa dancing probably would not have been an issue if the executive decision to keep both sets of doors open had been different.
Ok maybe I should have been more specific....
It would seem that you leave the impression that your are the only ones funding the library. I think that nickels35872 makes a valid point as does Warriorsfan30.
What happened to people stating opinions
Ms Aamodt started this with a rather trivial grievance in a library with a dedicated staff(some of them unpaid volunteers). Those of us with a different experience there simply responded in the library's defense.
Pine River
Pine River's library is very nice, bright, updated, warm and (don't quote me) has 6 computers. You can't just pop in and sit at one, you do have to have a library card and tell them how long you think you will need it. That's not asking a lot.
I go in every month at least and get about 5 books. If it's not there, I can get on the waiting list, and that is generally a week waiting period.
Very happy with my area library :)
missionary, you are crude and
missionary, you are crude and show yourself to be a fool.
Thank you there
Thank you there Muttleyliberal, I am so grateful I offended you, because you are trying to twist what I said into something evil. When my simple point was to be grateful for what you have and quit whining about what you don't have for your own personal comfort because there are many that don't have their health. Nice try Muttleyliberal.
Oh, I get it, you mean people
Oh, I get it, you mean people who suffer from mental health issues, well, you should know.
