When freedom is gone
I am writing in response to the letter from the gentleman from Baxter that appeared in Thursday’s paper. First, let me say that I believe in freedom of speech and freedom of the press. I am also a true believer in the wisdom of our founding fathers and I carry a copy of the Constitution in my purse. It saves a lot of time when people want to argue with me.
And, I might add, that if the citizens of these great United States have not noticed the erosion of our rights in the last few years, you simply are not paying attention.
Now, specifically, I notice the letter in question started with the Clinton administration and went straight to the Obama administration. Apparently, you missed the 8 years of the Bush administration. He, the Vice President, and others were called every name in the book, even Hitler. No joking matter. I must have missed your letters of protest during those years. I’m sure you are just as offended by comment from the left as from the right. I am.
I love my country, and have done so for more years than I care to admit. I just want to warn people reading this paper.....when your freedoms are gone, you won’t get them back. A very famous wise man, maybe Jefferson or Franklin (I forget which one) made this observation, and I will paraphrase: if you give up your freedom for security, you deserve neither.
