The figures from “down under “(Australia)
are in, one year after the absolute confiscation of all firearms
occurred as the result of the country’s strict new gun control. It has
now been 12 months since gun owners in Australia were forced by a new
law to surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed by the
government; a program that cost Australian taxpayers more than $500
million.
After the first year, Australia-wide: Homicides are up
6.2 percent, assaults are up 9.6 percent, and armed robberies are up 44
percent — yes,44 percent!
There has also been a dramatic increase in break-ins and assaults of the elderly while they are in their own homes.
In
the state of Victoria alone, homicides with firearms are up 300
percent! While law-abiding citizens turned in their guns, criminals did
not, and thus they are still in possession of them. The criminals are
nearly guaranteed that their “prey” is unarmed!
Australian
politicians are “at a loss” to explain how public safety has suffered,
after such monumental effort and expense was expended in “successfully
ridding the Australian society of guns!”
To that question, I
can only mutter ”DUH!” The Australian experience speaks for itself:
Guns in the hands of honest citizens save lives and property and
gun-control laws really affect only the law-abiding citizens.

Ms. Olson's "facts" come from a debunked viral email. Doesn't the Dispatch do even basic fact-checking before publishing? (If you click on this, you can find Olson's numbers in the "A Little Gun History Lesson" - press "click to expand")

How's the Corvette running, Christine?
Not 12 months, Christine,
But 17 years since the gun reform in Australia.
No mass shootings since then either.
Poor Christine. Fooled by a fallacious email.
Will Art Becker repeat this one?
Not only debunked...
heree's an opinion piece from 2000, about then-Australian atty general Darryl Williams request for an apology from Lapierre and the NRA for running a series of TV spots that were ultimately hurting the Aussie tourism industry.

Turns out that the NRA was using manufactured quotes and figures , one of the bulwharks of conservative political strategy, and they were ultimately forced to abandon the campaign. Gun violence had been significantly reduced after the public there was no longer allowed to posess semi-automatic firearms without a license.
What a concept...make absolutely sure that the nutcases like the NRA member in Alabama...can't use their guns on us! Remember the guy that killed Tonya Hettver? He was an NRA member too!
Somebody with accurate
Somebody with accurate information needs to respond to this misinformation in the paper, not just on line. It's people like Christine who act as puppets in misinforming the general population, and if better heads do not prevail, this kind of propaganda fuels the fires of the misinformed.
Let Mike O'Rourke tackle it.
There is a lot of material online about it.
And then interview Christine for the story!
