Military exemption
In response to the Jan. 21 reader opinion regarding exempting military pensions from
being subject to state taxes, I suggest you reprint the guest column written
by Suzi Pohl during the Bush administration where she so eloquently describes
the trials, tribulations and sacrifices a military member and his or her
family endure throughout their career.
Since Minnesota does not have a major federal
military installation in-state, most benefits from those installations are
not available to our retirees, or minimal at best. It would be a small
gesture of good faith to recognize their selfless contributions by exempting
their pension pay from the state income tax system.

John, you are getting what you signed up for. Don't expect more now that you're retired. What if we all expected our employers to "up the ante" after we retire?
No one forced you to become a "lifer" in the military. You chose that based on what you knew at the time to be the benefit for you staying in.
