Milk cliff

Milk cliff

A frequent bugaboo of the “fiscal cliff” debacle was the “milk cliff” — the threat of milk price doubling, if Congress failed to extend dairy subsidies. Parents were forgoing other necessities, because their children “had to have milk.”

Most industries would gladly give up their tax loopholes for that kind of product loyalty. But this one is totally undeserved.

Consumption of dairy products, laden with saturated fats, cholesterol, hormones and drugs elevates the risk of diabetes, heart disease and cancer. This is particularly critical during childhood years, when dietary flaws become lifelong addictions.

A study of 12,829 children by Harvard Medical School found that drinking cow’s milk leads to weight gain.

Several proteins in cow’s milk can thicken mucus secretions leading to respiratory problems in children.

Most African-Americans and Asian-Americans suffer from cramping and diarrhea because they lack the enzyme to digest lactose in cow’s milk.

The good news is that green leafy vegetables and legumes supply all the calcium and proteins touted in cow’s milk, without the excess calories and other yucky factors noted. Every supermarket offers a huge line of dairy-free milks, cheeses and ice creams made from healthy nuts and grains.

This is why USDA’s current Dietary Guidelines for Americans, shun dairy (and meat) off the recommended plate of vegetables, fruits and grains.

Cow’s milk is produced for bovine – not human babies. Let’s give our kids a healthy start!

Nice

So these comments are what pass for civil, intelligent discourse these days?

Comment 1: "Nut farm." Another way of saying psychiatric ward. Implying the author of the opinion piece is insane.

Comment 2: A man's name indicates his mental state. Plus, since it matches someone who is known from a psychiatric hospital, it must be true.

Comment 3: A failed attempt at (lowbrow) humor. What on earth does it even mean?

Nicer yet,

You added nothing to the conversation other then to attack the other two commenters and not add anything?! How about the fact that the author only cites one source for all their blather? According to this author I guess no one should ever drink milk again cause its just bad for you! Weight gain is tied in to many more factors then just milk consumption so either this person is from the funny farm or they are just trying to push some anti-dairy agenda!

Mr. FredAnderson

Every supermarket offers dairy free type products made with nuts and grain, according to the letter writer. Which would be why there was a comment about the "nut farm". It possibly wasn't what you thought
the commenter meant by nut. The writer is promoting something and talks about nuts and grains.

It would seem your sense of humor is not the same if you don't see the humor in the remarks.
What is the writers problem with cows?
What are babies to drink? Not all can be nursed.

How about a study with more than 13,000 children?

The writer

is the same one who asked us not to eat turkey at
Thanksgiving.

This guy chooses not to eat dairy and all meat and
who knows what else. That is fine but, we can choose
for ourselves if we want to drink milk and eat turkey.

I did stop drinking milk at age 5, of course, I would drink
chocolate milk.

As to your "nut farm" comment. Come on, you know the context of the original remark, and it wasn't referring to the man's horticultural acumen. I find no humor in attacking a person's name and somehow conflating that with being insane. But I guess it's par for the course with the quality of comments on these boards.

As far as your other comments are concerned, that's what I'm talking about! You are engaging in debate and dialogue about a topic you feel strongly about, adding new information and anecdotes to your opinion. That's what discussion forums are for, and if these forums were more than just casually moderated, would be steered toward from the outset.

Imagine that you're having a debate and the moderator asks you to start. You turn to your opponent and instead of presenting your case, you look at his name tag and say: "I see that this debate is over. That nutjob has 'Boris' for a first name. He must be a communist or something with a Russian first name like that."

Who do you imagine would win that debate?

1st ammendment

But I suppose after they take away the 2nd ammendment then it's on to the 1st I suppose! Then you won't have to listen to those pesky views you disagree with

What in the world

are you getting on about?

Who exactly is taking away your second amendment rights? And who is going to take away your first amendment rights?

Which views that I don't agree with are you talking about? Calling someone insane on a discussion forum? If I called you a rapist and a murderer on these discussion forums, would you protect my right to say these things? Or do you believe the first amendment is limited in such cases?

Do you truly believe you have first amendment rights on a private discussion forum?

Please elaborate.

When I read the letter and

When I read the letter and the first comment about the
"nut farm" I thought the commenter did mean that he must
be selling nuts. You can call me naive, but that is what I thought. I don't know what the commenter meant, I guess
you are able to know what they mean.

I don't agree with making fun of his name, that is just not my thing. I have said something in the past when people make
fun of Art Becker when he writes. When people write in and sign their name, we should respect them for putting their name out there even if we don't agree.

Agreed. Attack the argument and not the person (if you must attack).

When I read posts that attack a person's name, whether it be "Governor Moonbeam," "Barry Hussein," or even "W," I automatically tune that person out, even if what follows is a good, logical argument. That person has lost all credibility. Have some respect. And if all else fails, have a little self-respect and just shut up.

I don't have time for Junior High school antics.

I would protect your rights to call me whatever you want as I am perfectly able to disprove you calling me those things. I, like Sadie, don't think FnB called him a name directly and didn't violate any of the "forum" rules. My comment about the 2nd amendment is pretty simple and if you don't think anyone wants to take guns away then you sir need to wise up a pay attention to what is going on in the country. Your sensitivity training obviously went too far.

I'm sorry

I just don't understand what you're saying. I never said that no one WANTS to take away your guns, I asked who is taking away your Second Amendment rights.

Of course there are many who WANT to take your guns away. By some of your non-sensical responses, I certainly would want to. But I'll keep mine. There are also many who WANT you to have guns. So what?

A hint: Name calling can be considered libel. That's not constitutionally protected, forum rules notwithstanding. Neither is slander. And you have no Constitutional rights to free speech on Brainerd Dispatch's forums. Sorry.

I don't get your "sensitivity training" comment. I just can't abide boors.

freddy,

I was referring to a real "NUT FARM" growing edible nuts and grains. I was asking what iron the author had in the fire. He was attacking real dairy products and promoting nuts and grains. You are WRONG and a BIGGOTED ****. Please get a new job, because your intrepting job has expired.
If you were just doing a Lefter smear job twisting my words like snow/southie, then just fess up and slink away.

What name is in this: "What nut farm do you own?"
I called no one names and YOU FALSELY ACCUSED ME.
Go lay down by your dish fred!
Come sue me another time, I'd like the money from my countersuit.

Hahahaha

What does "biggoted ****" mean? I'm not sure what a star, star, star, star refers to. I'm not sure even what "biggoted" is supposed to be. Bigoted, maybe? Please save the faux outrage for someone who gives a star, star, star, star.

As far as falsely accusing you is concerned, well, I apologize for giving you too much credit in coming up with a witty double entendre. I guess you're not that clever, though Oldfarmboy seemed to pick up on it just fine.

I don't know who "Lil'Cappy" is and I don't own a Jeep. Sorry.

Fred, you're rather new to this forum . . . and, therefore, may

have some rather unrealistic and high expectations for the level of discourse. Good luck with that. I'm with you, but be prepared for the reality that about half of the "dialogue" in this forum is anything but civil and/or topical. (Welcome aboard, by the way. I've always appreciated your comments -- even the ones with which I disagree.)

And, getting back to the topic, the author is, nutritionally-speaking, more or less correct. I'd still argue that milk is better for kids and teens than a constant diet of corn-fructose laden soda pop, but that's another ag-related issue.

The government's subsidies to both big ag and big oil need to be reconsidered, imo. If some incremental help needs to be provided to small dairy farmers to help with even a generational transition, maybe that's reasonable. (My entire and very large extended family are farmers in eastern Iowa.)

Thanks for the kind comments. I will heed your warning and lower my expectations.

I also agree with the author, as I am lactose intolerant. And I do enjoy soy, almond, and rice milk. However, I have no problem with others partaking in the bovine counterpart, as long as it's rBGH free.

Fred, just admit it...

...your interpretation of the FNBs nut farm comment was tortured, at best. FNB clearly asked what nut farm the writer OWNED, not what nut farm he lived on. If you spent a little more time processing what people wrote before you reacted, you'd save yourself a lot of embarrassment.

Same Old Arguments

The last time this guy posted about promoting the vegetarian lifestyle I Googled some of his text and it came right from a canned letter that was sent out to numerous newspapers around the country. This time I Googled the statement

"Cow’s milk is produced for bovine – not human babies. Let’s give our kids a healthy start!"

I found the EXACT same letter in A lot of papers, This one is from The Sentinal-Standard.com Written by Ike Shannon of Ionia, MI.

http://www.sentinel-standard.com/article/20130105/OPINION/130109786/0/NEWS

It's funny that you can be criticized for telling a joke about a FAKE letter NOT written by the "Author." The silliest part about the whole thing is that the same 5-6 people having the same argument over and over that has nothing to do with the story. You try to insult each other without triggering the other persons hyper sensitivity which will in turn come back to you as another insult. You guys crack me up! Thanks for the entertainment.
