Welfare states

Posted: January 2, 2013 - 6:35pm

Ten states where you don’t want to live: California, New York, Illinois, Maine, Hawaii, Ohio, Kentucky, Mississippi, Alabama, and New Mexico.

What do they have in common? Each of those states has more welfare recipients than employed citizens.

Last time I looked, these states were “blue” Obama states.

Poor Art,

Anyone else think Mississippi, Kentucky and Alabama are "Obama blue states"?

Bond

Not questioning your states results, but what were they based
on? Where did it come from? I looked up best educated states and got different answers. It depends on what the definition of education is. One said "college educated" was the definition.
Here is a list from State Master.Com Best Educated index
1. Vermont
2. CT
3. Mass
4. N.J.
5. Maine
6. MN
7. VA
8. WI
9. Montana
10. N.Y.

Not just "welfare" recipients measured in this "research"

Speaker of the South Carolina House Bobby Harrell, R-Charleston, says the article from Forbes (which published the state ratings from which Art condensed this most recent rant) is wrong, especially in calling members of the military, public employees and retirees “takers”.

“We have military installations all over South Carolina (ranked sixth in "death spiral" states). Those folks are government employees, but they are certainly the kind of government employees that we want, because we care passionately about the military in South Carolina."

In the number of supposed "welfare" recipients to which Art refers are: state/federal/military workers, and people who are receiving pension.

Curious methodology to lump welfare recipients equally with someone providing services for a paycheck (and paying taxes themselves) and someone receiving earned pension.

Not surprising, then, the number of folks on "welfare" in these states, but the way it is worded is misleading to me. Art seems to enjoy grandstanding by providing misleading bits and snippets of the whole story. In fact, he's such a good rhetorical "bomb thrower", if he's tired of collecting S.S., Hansen might have a job for him!

Well, Sadie,

Your list of states are all blue states, except Montana, which seems to be more evidence supporting the theory that blue states are smarter. Just imagine if Art were from a Red State, he might be an intellectual rock star.

Good One 007 !

However it may be a little early in the year to confuse Art & his associate/date UBO with facts, since they are still trying to focus on working with the NRA to get all those teachers weapons and training to keep kids safe , you know like in Dodge City KS!

Red state leaders

The one place where the southern red states are clear leaders is college football. But that's about it.

Southie

I'm not obsessed with the red/blue state division. I was trying to point out that it depends on the definition of "education" as
different criteria were used. Also, what is your definition of a
red state and a blue state? If a state has a Repub. Gov. and voted for Obama then it is a blue state? Education is a or should be a state issue not a federal issue.
I think it is silly but, maybe a fun thing to joke about. Many
states are almost evenly divided and if you look at the counties that is a another rude awakening.
As MN Twin Cities would probably Blue and suburbs would
be red. I don't know for sure, just guessing.

The country is split in many ways.

Art states "blue Obama States."

I am merely pointing out that he is wrong, once again, in that three of those states he listed did not vote for Obama.

Rolf, maybe there is a connection between football success and lower achievement and quality in education.

Good theory Southie, so that

Good theory Southie, so that means St. Thomas and St.Johns
who usually have good football teams receive a low quality
in education and lower accievement? Or are you just looking
at public schools?

Where does the U of MN football team fit in? Or the basketball team? I guess it is a fun game to play with the
red/blue comparisons.

We are a divided country and state and the red/blue state
division is fun but meaningless unless there are some clear
definitions.

Or maybe there is an inverse

relationship between the percentage of a University's budget dependent upon footfall revenue and the standing of the university academically. For example, Harvard has little success and revenue from football, but has high standing academically world-wide.

Or maybe I am just sad that my alma mater got whipped brutally recently and I am just looking for a positive spin in their loss.

Off to the city of tall buildings!

Red States, Blue States

States that receive the most federal spending for every tax dollar sent to Washington (most recent figures from 2005):

1) New Mexico 2.03
2) Mississippi 2.02
3) Alaska 1.84
4) Louisiana 1.78
5) West Virginia 1.76
6) North Dakota 1.68
7) Alabama 1.66
8) SD 1.53
9) Kentucky 1.51
10) Virginia 1.51

All but NM are considered red states.

States that received the least federal spending:
50) NJ .61
49) Nevada .65
48) Conn. .69
47) NH .72
46) MN .72
45) Ill. .75
44) Delaware .77
43) Calif. 78
42) NY .75
41) Colorado .81

Of those, Colorado and Nevada are considered reds states, the rest are blue.

Correction Otter

Colorado and Nevada are BLUE states as they both supported Obama.

So BLUE states are givers while RED states are takers.

Purposed: I think you're "spot on" -- same theory goes

for Keith Hansen in his role as V.P. of "Outrage Development" for Dispatch (discussed in comments after his editorial on Dec 23). Hansen is paid to "stir it up" and Becker does it as a hobby? Maybe they're "best buds"? It's certainly a way to approach political discourse, but quite a cynical one. And Keith has the audacity to plead for "civil discourse" when he is provocateur-in-chief for a living! Nice try, though! Whatever it takes to raise revenue and make a living.

"It would be interesting to be a fly on the wall for the performance review for Mr. Hansen, after year one as V.P., Audience Development. The "outrage" business is key in media these days, and part of Hansen's job is to be Provocateur-in-Chief.

The obvious goal in these media businesses, including Morris Media (BDD owner, Hansen's boss) is to attract customers/readers. "Increasing profit comes with market penetration. Market penetration comes from providing the target audience with compelling political shows or stories. And what’s the common denominator for “compelling”? In politics, it’s what makes you angry." The "outrage industry" is involved in the "mindful attempt to provoke an emotional response from the audience, usually in the form of anger, fear, or moral righteousness. Outrage is often, but not always, accomplished through the use of categorical statements, exaggerations, and partial truths about opponents which may take the form of individuals, organizations, or entire communities of interest (e.g., progressives or conservatives) or circumstances (e.g., immigrants). Outrage sidesteps the messy nuances of complex political issues in favor of ad hominem attacks, overgeneralizations, mockery, and dire forecasts of impending doom. Outrage is not so much a discussion as it is verbal competition, political conversation with a scorecard." (from a facinating paper, http://ase.tufts.edu/polsci/prospective/OutrageIndustry.pdf)

Sounds like techniques employed in many of Mr. Hansen's commentaries. My guess is that his employers at Morris are pleased with his performance; the "outrage factor" has been achieved, for good, bad or otherwise. (Info. about Hansen's job description: http://brainerddispatch.com/opinion/columnists/2012-03-23/hansen-vp-audi...)" (from Dispatch comments, Hansen's Dec. 23 editorial about "civil discourse")

Purposed: I guess I wasn't really referring to inaccuracies, or

corrections thereof. I was more agreeing with you that Art may be an "instigator"/flame-thrower of sorts -- writing to get a reaction, and sitting back and "chuckling" (as you noted) when he does. And I think Keith Hansen is essentially paid to do the same. I'm sure he loves his work (and his publisher, from reading yesterday's editorial, loves having him on staff). Nice work, I guess, if you're proud of facilitating that sort of thing.
