‘Team of Rivals’

I urge everyone to see the movie “Lincoln.” Directed by Steven Spielberg it is a historical drama that has valuable insight for us in these divisive times for our country.

The film is based on Doris Kearns Goodwin’s biography of Lincoln, “Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln.” It covers the final four months of Lincoln’s life, focusing on Lincoln’s efforts in January 1865 to have the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution pass the United States House of Representatives.

Eleven southern states seceded from the United States. The country was ripped apart by a Civil War. In his second inaugural speech Lincoln sought to avoid harsh treatment of the defeated South by reminding his listeners of how wrong both sides had been in imagining what lay before them when the war began four years earlier. Lincoln did not back down from the evil of slavery.

“With malice toward none; with charity for all; with firmness in the right, as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in; to bind up the nation’s wounds; to care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow, and his orphan — to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace, among ourselves, and with all nations.” — (Abraham Lincoln, Second Inaugural Address, March 4, 1865)

These are Lincoln’s words to begin to heal a wounded and divided nation. On the night of April 14, 1865, Lincoln was assassinated.

Lincoln was willing to take on tough issues and work with his rivals to move our great nation forward. Is that too much to ask all our elected leaders to do now? “Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” — George Santayana.

Saw the movie too and completely agree with you Ms. Ferris. It's time to put politics aside and acknowledge that we're all in this together and we all need to work together to move forward.

Good luck USA.

Congress needs to park their egos at the door and keep away from the cable news microphones. They are already running for reelection. Their use of catch phrases with little meaning to pander to their supporters is juvenile. (fiscal cliff, kick the can down the road...)

Now I see Boehner on TV vacillating from previous remarks which had indicated he might be open to compromise.

List definite cuts and be willing to compromise. It will require pain on all sides, but is necessary. The public is fed up with Congress. How much lower can their approval ratings go?

I hope Susan Rice is selected to be the next SOS. The debate could provide content for the next election cycle's ads. Maybe the Democrats should just let the GOP select their candidates for positions. They probably still wouldn't vote for them.

It reminds me of a joke I read. If President Obama said, don't eat yellow snow, FOX NEWS would be touting the benefits of doing so.

And the selection by the GOP leadership of 19 men to head all of the congressional committees puts a face to their disrespect for women in their party. Did they forget that more women than men vote?

As for spending cuts, start with their own Congressional budgets. If you aren't doing anything, you don't need hundreds of aides and workers to help you do nothing, do you? And cut your salaries, too. Join in the austerity that your voters are enduring.

The public needs to come together and let congress know it is "We the People" who hold the power, not them. They serve us, not the other way around.

All those congressional aides are keeping busy getting her school transcripts, birth certificate , student aid applications , and now searching all the records prior to 1998 , because nothing else is going on.
Susan Rice is certainly the GOPs current bogus distraction...

If you truly want all to get along, how about adding Democrats to the comments on the Congress. Have you ever seen Chuck Schumer run to the mics?
The Dems in Congress are equally responsible for all the
countries problems as is the current President. You can talk about
President Bush and the Republicans, but really we could
all get along if you would also consider that Democrats
are also responsible.

Lifelongres, I have the same foreboding thoughts

that America is sliding headlong into war, and it will rip the country to shreds. It is no longer avoidable, its coming.

They must be the ones we used to see @ all the Tea Party Rallys , wearing cammo ,sporting weapons and carrying racist signs.

First we had the Mittster fund raising in Israel with his casino pal while talking tough on Iran & Syria , now the local yahoos here are even getting motivated.

Guess they dont understand even now , when you cut taxes and charge a couple expensive wars to the country credit card ,you eventually end up in debt .

Better start praying the GOP controlled US House of Reps starts thinking about voting on the BUSH tax cut extension the US Senate passed some time ago.
That would be the one the President said he was ready to sign then held up his pen !
Doubt that was on the Faux Entertainment Network.

Some people just live to troll

hoping they can snag a floating log, all the while spreading bitterness and discontent. I've never been to any teaparty meetings, I did send Mitt money so he could displace the current partisan thug in office. Even though he lost, it was money well spent, letting the current leader know that some of us dont appreciate him selling our great country to the Mexican cartels.

It is interesting to note that some of the DFL'ers are willing to admit we are deep in debt due to the wars, but they refuse to come to the table and make deep budget cuts. They would rather just keep taxing and taxing and taxing. They don't care, its not THEIR money!

I cant afford oil so I use libby fat.

Purposed if ya watch on inter-net some times you run across a good deal. If ya have Military. 5.56 or 7.62 anyways. Someday when I grow up I have to get me one of those 50 Cal's. The range is unbelievable. No tea party rally here either.

If some have already fallen off the cliff, then it would be safe to assume they were on the private sector side of things, eh?

50 cal.? Could you imagine getting pulled over by a CO with that baby uncased? That Canadian, with the mile and half snipe shot, must have sent the camel dung down the legs of the survivors and sent them to the next valley...three miles away.

I say let's go over the fiscal cliff

Will it cost me a lot of money, yes. Will I be able to survive it, yes. Will it damage my business, yes. It will be worth every penny of it to see how President Obama explains to a family of four making $40,000 per year how he just cost them an addition $2500 in taxes. Especially when he had it within his power to completely avoid it.
