20 years ago (1992)

The Baxter City Council gave Mary Sterner her old job back. Sterner, serving as interim mayor through Dec. 31st, was appointed to fill the remaining two years of John Erickson’s unexpired term. She had moved from council to interim mayor in July.

30 years ago (1982)

A disappointed Brainerd School Board has learned that most Nisswa parents don’t want their kids in Brainerd as part of a new program for 6th and 7th graders. In a survey they voted 3 to 1 against combining 6th and 7th graders at one Brainerd school.

40 years ago (1972)

(Photo) Russell Caughey, Route 1, is shown with a 431-pound black bear which he shot while deer hunting in the Fifty Lakes area. It was entered in the Lassig’s Log Cabin contest. Caughey said it took several hours for his party to drag the bear out of the woods.

60 years ago (1952)

Plymouth’s 1953 Cranbrook has chrome trim integrated as part of the design to enhance its long, low, wide appearance. See the 1953 Plymouth on display tomorrow at all Brainerd Plymouth dealers – Bob Halloran Motors, Hanning Motors and Wood Motor.

80 years ago (1932)

Distinction of bagging what is believed the largest deer to be taken in several seasons goes to Gus Bertel, Pillager farmer. He proudly displayed among his friends a 450-pound buck. He shot it in the hip, tracked it two miles and finally felled it north of Pillager.

100 years ago (1912)

Charles Geminder, the fleet-footed Western Union messenger boy, has returned from a visit with the Carlisle family at Deerwood. During Geminder’s absence business languished at the W. U. telegraph office and they’re glad he’s back.
