Election financing

Posted: November 11, 2012 - 10:38pm

Congratulations to Representative Rick Nolan! I, with great hope, agree that your desire to institute “public financing” for elections is exciting!

The Supreme Court, in all its wisdom, opened up “Pandora’s Box” with its decision that corporations, and private funding, are the same as personal donations.

Those billions that they did “donate” surely could be used in a more humane way.

100% public financing of elections NOW!

I couldn't agree more. Virtually everything wrong with congress and it's inability to solve our biggest challenges circles back to the corrupt way that we finance elections.

No person or entity (union or corporation) should be allowed to step to the front of the line with their hand out for welfare by buying Free Speech.

Karl Roves Value has been diminished by about 300 million US $

His investors netted one Senate seat total.
However we should probably send him a Thank You Uncle Karl note since he donated a few bucks to buy those over the top
Chipster Ads we saw , you have to remember the classic one that had black & white photos of Rick Nolan in the 1970s actually talking to Ted Kennedy about that dreaded " European Style Socialized Health Care "

How things can backfire!

This marks the second presidential election cycle in a row where democrats--largely on the strength of far superior individual donation numbers--have outspent and out-campaigned the republican candidate.

This time, the SCUS decision opened things wide up and who benefitted the most? It wasn't Romney! Obama's campaign spent $100 million more than Romney did in the end.

Probably even more important is when that money was available to both. Obama had raised 3 times what Romney did during the peak of primary season....but didn't have to spend as much. By the time he was confirmed as the republican candidate, Romney had a tough go for awhile having spent much of his money.

Perhaps republicans will reconsider their long-standing opposition to campaign finance reform now--but it's hard to imagine democrats going along with it given their success.

Give them each a budget and

Give them each a budget and see how wisely they can utilize it. Might be a good indicator of how they will manage tax revenues if they get elected.

It's too bad that Romney had a "rough go" because he had already spent most of his money. Perhaps he should have budgeted better?

Obama had a network of ground

Offices in place for the last four years in battleground states. He is a strategist for the 21st Century, not a hunt and peck typist!

He had women supporters working hard, not in binders!

Just compare the DFL office in Crow Wing to the GOP office here. The GOP may have won, but they had no group organization to compare to the Nolan supporters for Cravaack.

I think the so called

I think the so called strategist may be David Axelrod
and Jim Messina .When your whole focus is to get re-elected and not govern, then you keep offices open for 4years and
have women work for you.

I don't even know where the Crow Wing GOP office is
so I don't how many people volunteered there. I imagine
most of the people work and don't have time to sit around
at GOP office. Southie, you do know alot about the
local GOP office.

Not everyone or every group operates the same.
There are different ways to organize.
Different ways for voter suppresion,

Obama might have to govern for a change,

the campaigning is done and from here on in there is no one to blame for mistakes except Obama. He owns it all now, economy, foreign policy, energy, everthing!!

Not that simple, LLR. We own

Not that simple, LLR. We own it all and we all profit or lose if the President, house and senate don't learn to compromise and work together. Maybe a starting point is getting Grover Norquist to put his no new tax policy in a bathtub and drowning it.

After all look at Obama's vote totals!

"It's one thing for a Democratic presidential candidate to dominate a Democratic city like Philadelphia, but check out this head-spinning figure: In 59 voting divisions in the city, Mitt Romney received not one vote. Zero. Zilch."

Philadelphia Inquirer

Seems a little odd that there were Republicans on the ballot that received votes.

They tried to find some Republicans, LLR

This is the story.

McCain did no better four years ago.

"Many parts of Philadelphia and other big cities simply lack Republican voters, a fact of campaigning that has been true since Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal, Stanford University's Rodden said.

In 2008, McCain got zero votes in 57 Philadelphia voting divisions. That was a big increase from 2004, when George W. Bush was blanked in just five divisions."

Not how it works Shad,

You libs have been telling me for 4 years that it's all George Bush's fault. Shoes on the other foot now, you own it so do your best to stick up for your man! A libs idea of compromise is to do it exactly as they want it otherwise you're a racist, a right wing radical, a bible thumper, a homophobe etc. etc. etc. Nope your party is in charge so you just do it all on your own and the only people to blame will be the liberals. Have fun!!

Bush snickers:

" Boy, did Obama ever inherit a mess this time!"

And that zero vote was a crime and proof of the communist run regime.

Reality hurts.

Fox News ignored the majority of polls and called them slanted and incorrect.

They swore by Gallup and Rasmussen.

And the disappointment that that has caused has had a visceral effect on their ardent followers.

I just read the story on Philiy voting story and you forgot
to add that there was no mistakes in almost 20,000 votes
cast. That is unusual and should be looked at. Human nature
alone would give you at least 10 spoiled ballots.

That may be the way some

That may be the way some people would act, but the people that I know were
disappointed that Romney lost because they couldn't believe so many people
were so stupid. They were not surprised though as they know all that happens
in an election. You give too much credit to Fox - people really do read more
sources than you think or should I say Media Matters thinks.

Move on to the problems

Now can we get back to what happened in Benghazi?
The national debt.
Fiscal cliff.
Economy.

Women can get all their birth control and abortions as if that was ever
going to be a problem.
Get ready for the hikes in taxes for you that pay taxes.
Maybe it's time to read that Obamacare 2000 pages to see what is
coming. We have had our insurance cancelled due to it and must pay more.

No, southie.

You don't get it. We're agreeing with you. The ball is in your court. You can stop the condescending remarks. The election is over. You won. Fox news can now join the NYT, CNN and MSNBC because they're no longer necessary. Go ahead and tax the bejeebers out of the rich. We're just going to sit back and enjoy our free healthcare.

Obamacare was never going to be free.

Remember, the Supreme Court called it a tax.

And it will take the next two years to be fully implemented.

Thanks for your support. I know we all want a less divisive America.
