Taylor's no teacher

Posted: October 25, 2012 - 4:40pm

I recently received a Taylor Stevenson for senate District 10 flyer in which he states that he is a teacher in the Brainerd School District.

Upon checking Stevenson’s credentials on the Minnesota Department of Education website I found that he is teaching on a limited short call subtitute certificate.

That is a far cry from being a teacher as he claims!

On further checking his degree is in government, philosophy and German, not education at all.

Our teachers work hard for their education degrees and put in countless hours of continuing education to keep their licensure current. Taylor Stevenson may substitute once in awhile, but he is definitely not a teacher as he claims.

Now how would one, without the proper credentials, do this without help from his "buddies"?

OK, I get it!

The athletic department was in dire need of a uncertified coach for the football program and track and field squad.

The outside money financing

this campaign is ridiculous. Some reform is needed. Why should our mailboxes be stuffed with anonymous trashy ads? I think the names of the treasurers and Board of directors of these PACs should be on the literature.

Look them up in the Secretary of State's website and see who is trying to influence our local elections.

How does one become a substitute teacher?

It varies from district to district, but all you need to get a short term sub license is a bachelors degree and a background check. In fact, Dad, I can show you mine over Thanksgiving. Love you!

I'm a teacher?

I think I have also seen that in a Brd Dispatch ad.

I've been asking about this for weeks and wasn't sure how
to check on his assertion that he is a teacher I have also wondered how he could be a sub without a teachers degree.

What do teachers who are trying to get into this district by substituting and he would get the job, not them?

I have seen that also in his flyers.

Undue influence by outsiders

Is not the proper way to run local elections. What is next? Outside ads for and against school board and city council candidates?

There's some info. in this article about the 2011 changes to

requirements for teacher licensure:

http://www.fairmontsentinel.com/page/content.detail/id/516847/Teaching-l...

Sounds like some of you agree with Education MN teacher union members that these changes were ill-advised?

Requirements for substitute teaching are different than for teacher licensure. Substitute teaching is good training ground for the rough-'n-tumble world of politics, from my recollection of subbing in the last century. And, it was definitely "teaching", in my experience, with the added difficulty of being short-term.

Does the letter-writer also take issue with the increasingly large number of parents who undertake "home schooling", without first gaining the proper teaching credentials? If so, as a former teacher, I'd tend to agree.

I'm thinking this letter is less about how we choose to license teachers in MN, and more about saying she'd prefer someone else to be State Senator? That's certainly Ms. Armato's right, but just cut through this licensure canard and tell us why you think Stevenson's opponent would be preferable in St. Paul.

Just have to laugh at the partisan attacks sometimes!

This one is pretty good. Here we have a person who has degrees in multiple fields of expertise, according to the complainant. But no official teaching license.

Now step back a bit and think of what those on the right often claim--that people with knowledge and experience but no teaching degree should be allowed to be teachers in the state of MN, right? That's been a big point of emphasis for republicans!

And--one that I happen to agree with, to a point. I don't think Stevenson is a strong candidate at all, either.

But the laugher here is that they are saying someone should not be allowed to teach here unless they have a teaching license.

Arguments are twisted to fit the outcome, again. You shouldn't need a license if you are "our" type of teacher. But god help you if you aren't one of us and don't have your license.

It ain't about the supposed malfeasance here, it's about who wins the election.

Padding a less than substantial resume

As I read the letter it is not saying that Stevenson should not be allowed to teach , he has the certificate for subbing, just that he should not try to pass himself off as a Teacher in his advertising like he has an education degree and is a accredited full time teacher which he is not.

I don't know what the

I don't know what the requirements are to sub teach.
I do think that degrees in science and math, engineering would be ok to transition with additional training to teach those subjects. I don't know how long, maybe 8-10 weeks.
Just a guess.
The degrees he has government, philosophy and german are, to be honest, nothing that schools need at this time.
So, I would start with the degrees in science and math
and see how that works.
I just think that retired teachers and teachers trying to break into the district should have first dibs. Some of us are suspious how he was accepted into this "job" like maybe
his dad and Coach stolski got him in. And it is just something to put on his resume. To be honest, people just don't like or respect him.
Back to teaching, I do think that the teacher training in colleges needs to updated. It has been the same for too long.

A much better way to explain Lye...

Lutefisk (Norwegian) or Lutfisk (Swedish) or Ludfisk (Danish) (pronounced [lʉːtfesk] in Northern Norway, [lʉːtəfɪsk] in Central and Southern Norway, [lʉːtfɪsk] in Sweden and in Finland (Finnish: lipeäkala)) is a traditional dish of the Nordic countries. It is made from aged stockfish (air-dried whitefish) or dried/salted whitefish (klippfisk) and lye (lut). It is gelatinous in texture, and has an extremely strong, pungent odor. Its name literally means "lye fish."...

Sadie, you have knowledge about the teacher training

procedure? It has changed dramatically since math teachers learned on slide rules and abacuses. It requires an extra year beyond the four year degree in some schools. And many school districts are short on teachers in technology and math and science areas and hire those college grads with no credentials who can study online for the certification requirements at the same time they are teaching.

It is not a stagnant, unchanging field. Have you noticed the area schools which give every child in certain grades an iPad now? That required most teachers to take additional workshops to be able to maximize the potential in those ipads.

Most teachers take continuing education classes to keep advancing their skills. And they continue to earn degrees in the summer. I admire their tenacity and scholarship.

And I disagree, from what I have read, we could all use a little more studying of government.

Walk a mile in their shoes...or just sub for a day.

Go, Tay!

The point here is that we gave one of our citizens an education and now he thinks he's Godzilla. I thought we were supposed to go the other direction.

I see you may agree with me on the science and math majors moving into teaching. I also think moving retired military into teaching would be good. Now, as for my knowledge of teaching, -- my father, brother, sis-in-law, sister, brother-in -law, nephew and his wife. My husbands brother and his wife,
nephew and his wife. I count eleven people that I talk with
about teaching. To a person, they tell me that the college courses for a degree need to be upgraded. Some of these
people are in MN and most are out of state. My sis has 2 Masters so, yes I do know about the workshops they go to.
One topic my sis and I discuss is that I also have a Master
Degree and needed to take continuing ed classes that I paid for and she expected the school district to pay for hers even
though she got more money for the degree. So, I hear all
about the hours and all the work. I had volunteered for years in schools and quit 3 years ago to pursue other volunteer work. I never did want to be a teacher and do appreciate the patience.
I suppose that I could apply to be a sub. Maybe not.
Dutch - I agree and wish that the children in inner cities could at least have charter schools or decent schools and parents that cared about their education. That is the backbone to it all-parents....

Subsitute Teachers

Finding a substitute teacher who has some knowledge of children and likes kids is sometimes difficult. They need to have a bachelor's degree but need not have a teacher's license. Teacher's don't get hired full time unless they have completed Education Credits at an accredited college. So a substitute teacher will not usurp an licensed teacher who applies for a job. However, it is a good way to get experience if one is going on to get the proper educational credits. Taylor is a remarkable young man and is highly qualified to be a substitute teacher. Kudos to him!

Respected Teacher

Taylor Stevenson seems like a nice guy, but to say he is a respected teacher on any campaign literature is not correct. He should be saying that he is a respected substitute teacher, if that is the case. Granted, a substitute teacher is still teaching, but saying he is a respected teacher is purposefully misleading.

Think Taylor will have to "call some people" in this election?
