We need compromise
Regarding the effort of some religious leaders to influence our vote on the marriage amendment, there is an interesting quote from Barry Goldwater, a conservative Republican. “Mark my word,” he said. “If and when these preachers get control of the Republican party, and they’re sure trying to do so, it going to be a terrible problem.
Frankly, these people frighten me. Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can’t and won’t compromise. I know, I’ve tried to deal with them.”
And from French philosopher Blaise Pascal, “Men never do evil so completely and cheerfully as when they do it from religious conviction.” We should remember that one purpose of our Constitution is to protect the minority, not to enforce the convictions of a majority.
