Gazelka's move to new district

OPEN FORUM

Posted: March 2, 2012 - 9:37am

Now we hear Paul Gazelka is running away from us with his carpetbag, hoping that some district that doesn’t know him as well might send him back for another ride on the gravy train he created for the wealthy. He and the GOP (Grand Oppressive Party) want to do more economic damage to average Minnesotans.

The switch to a new district is no problem for Gazelka — just buy or rent another home just for an election.

Considering how little it seems to bother Gazelka to spend money for that, it’s easy to understand why he voted consistently for the wealthiest Minnesotans — and against the rest of us.

It’s apparently easy for Gazelka to move and leave behind the damage he’s done. However, it won’t be easy for him to leave his voting record behind, too.

Voters see though his false façade.

For instance, Gazelka’s record of voting to get rid of homestead market value credit will follow him into his new district. Rural property taxes increased far more than metro rates, and Gazelka voted to do that.

Gazelka’s anti-labor record and radical social agenda will follow him into his new district. That area is also filled with good hard-working people who are paying too much for property taxes and health care, and want the government out of their lives. Gazelka made all those worse. The average citizens deserve better representation.

I hope the good people in new District 9 realize they’re being used.

M. Fritz Bertelt

And they see through your's too, Fritzy! You are just an old curmudgeon who doesn't quite understand what he writes. Me thinks you need another shot of Geritol.

What?

Please explain how he voted constantly for the wealthiest
and against the rest of us? Name the votes beside the property tax one.

The one who has the most responsibility for voting against
the rest of us is John Ward. He pushed through the bill
to allow for the automatic property increase for teachers
pension. Thanks John.
Just for the record, our property taxes have gone up 30%in the last year with a decline in the value. It is more than one
issue going on with the property taxes.
Hopefully getting angry with Mr. Gazelka made you feel better
about yourself.

Brainerd Dispatch

None of my business, but for my own education, who
is being libeled - Mr. Gazelka or the letter writer?
It seems they both are public employees.
What is a actionable offensive?
Thank you

Come, come Fritz.

We feel your pain. Your public pension gravy train must have just about slowed to a stop.

Why not try understanding average MN taxpayers and the role your democrat friends played in getting us on this runaway tax train....instead of sitting there belching steam.

Sadie and defamation law

I can only claim limited knowledge, but public figures have a harder time proving defamation. Statements that degrade a person in his profession are actionable. But one defense is that you were just expressing an opinion.
If you are going to attack someone it's a good idea to precede your statements with the phrase 'in my opinion'.
Another defense is that your statements are true. You can see that court cases can be difficult to prove.

disgusted at the insults

I am appalled that people in the Brainerd area cannot voice an opinion without being thrown insults and called names.
Why does this paper allow this?
Mr, keep telling it like it is.....

Just curious but how would you characterize the following statements?

"Paul Gazelka is running away from us with his carpetbag,"

"send him back for another ride on the gravy train he created"

"Considering how little it seems to bother Gazelka to spend money"

"It’s apparently easy for Gazelka to move and leave behind the damage he’s done"

"I hope the good people in new District 9 realize they’re being used."

This writer has yet to figure out that real Americans are completely fed up with Obama, his marxist ideology, the DFL, and anyone who subscribes to their insanity.

Sadiemarriedlady, your property tax hike

Is courtesy of the MN GOP. It was the GOP that passed this bill during the abbreviated legislative session last year, when no member of the public was around to provide any input.

The real impact of this is complex....would take a long time to explain. But in general, people living in more affluent areas had their taxes DROP as a result of this change. This includes the richer suburbs of the twin cities and rochester, where much of the republican base lies--NOT a coincidence.

Most of the poorer areas in the state had their taxes RISE, sometimes rather dramatically, as a result of this change. The base in such areas leans democratic, again no surprise there!

This even holds true in this area. Go to the richer areas (e.g. Baxter, around the lakes) and you will find taxes generally declined. In much of Brainerd, they rose.

My taxes declined as a result of this, by the way. Still think it was a poor plan, at the least not something that should have been implemented with zero input or even access to committees or legislators while it was being passed!

My last comment on Paul. He's moving out of my district.

Paul has decided to make a decision to represent a new Senate District for the State of Minnesota.

For our family who owns property in Crow Wing County since 1879 (yes, since the 1800s), this does matter.

His disregard of folks who have maintained this legacy and has not researched this item is quite interesting.

Paul and I are born of the same month (October) of the same year (1959).

We're both children of the 1970s. What is more interesting, is that President John Kennedy made a powerful speech to the Separation of Church and State which is absolute, according to President Kennedy (although not explicit in the U.S. Constitution, however affirmed by every President and Supreme Court and Congressional Ruling since).

I'm a student of history and honor. Presidents Jefferson and since have affirmed this principal, as have many U.S. Supreme Court rulings to this effect as this Spring of 2012.

I'm at a loss on how Paul Gazelka has missed these proceedings.

It's my duty as a Child of the 1970's to speak out.

My father was a Republican, as was my Grandfather on both sides of my families.

This new generation of Republicans isn't anything my former generations would understand or approve of.

However, as I've been reminded, Politics is the Art of the Possible. Hopefully, the United States Citizens of America rise up and vote this to be true.

I have hope, it can, and will endure.

I guess we have to endure internal conflicts of conscience and faith to keep this true.

Thank you for reading.

Let the elections of 2012 begin and continue the great United States of America.

Interesting thought

I give Sen. Gazelka a good thank you... those who run for office are taking a big step for us... but I wonder why he's making the move... and I also wonder if it is a variation of what he did as a representative when he only did 1 term....

I think Godzelka is afraid of Aitkin County

Thus, the move. Actually, I think he will be 'renting' in lower Cass County until November 7th.

He's playing the odds. Maybe he thinks Aitkin County will not buy his God, gays, guns agenda. They may be more concerned with jobs and health care.

Meanwhile, we are left to deal with Rude Carrie running again. Good Luck SD 9. He's all yours.

Has anyone ever gotten a

Has anyone ever gotten a reply from Gazelka?

I've written him several times and never gotten a response.

At least 2 GOP legislators have said that people who have had dogs killed in body grip traps should "just accept it" and I wanted to find out if Gazelka feels the same.

legislators names

You missed the Godzelka misspell. Well, he did graduate from Oral Roberts University and he does speak for the religious right. That's his priority.

Have you ever been to a town hall meeting with her? Probably explains that remark.

Not like elected Democrats are always treated with respect on this forum. I've seen horrible remarks about DFL'ers.

When you have no facts insults work?

I have known Carrie for years and I have never known her to rude, in fact she is probably on of the nicest folks I know. I have been to a town hall meeting with her, several in fact and I thought she treated eveyone with respect. When and where did you have a different experience or is it just trash and burn when you have no facts.

Guess 2012 is the election of Gazelka

Let's see what the voters think.
If he gets in again, ok.
If the Minnesota Senate changes stripes (becomes the minority again), he loses his treasured Assistant Majority Leader Status and becomes one of the folks who cannot ram Constitutional Amendments down the folks throats.

A consistent pattern of legislation behavior (Minnesota Statewide Constitutional Amendments) is what Paul has shown and unlikely to change.

He might have to answer to Grover Nordquist (an unelected person) on why he's not able to keep the pledge. Darn, darn, super big darn.

Yes,I have gotten a reply from Paul's online newsletter.
I have let him know in a respectful way my disappointment in his amendment proposals. I think that constituents need to voice their opinion to legislators so they realize that not all people agree with what they are doing.

I always get a result lately if it is a reply to the email that is sent to me. Last year they were inconsistent in replying to my emails sent directly to them. Now I get rapid replies from an aide of Mr. Gazelka. It is nice to see that.

lakelander, of course you're getting replies now. It's election year. When officials start moving to new districts to be able to run, that makes me think all they care about is being in their gravy job of a politician and not about their constituents.

Carpetbag? Really

Come on Fritz. Who is a bigger carpetbagger than your average Democrat? How long had the great Al Franken been away from MN? Well over 20 years. How about Taryl Clark, who moved to Duluth just to run against Chip? On a national level lets look at Hillary. Why did she move to New York? If she would have moved back to Arkansas and ran for Senate that would be one thing..but New York? Going back almost 50 years we can look to Bobby Kennedy moving to New York just to run for the Senate. Now, I love Bobby Kennedy..but lets be clear on who the carpetbagger is. I think its one thing to move a few miles down the road for redistricting, but moving clear across the state like Clark? Or a NEW state like Clinton? Fritz, youre a hypocrite. Plain and simple. And dont forget the rest of us are paying Fritz pension after paying his salary for all those years.
