Rotary’s generous donation
I’d like to not only congratulate the Brainerd Rotary Club’s in the acquisition of the property along the Mississippi River below Pump House Hill, but their generous donation of this property to the Brainerd’s park system. This parcel of river front land will serve as a great asset for the area’s citizens for generations. There is a tremendous amount encouragement heard today for people to get outdoors and enjoy a healthy, active lifestyle. That’s great! But what I’ve seen and witnessed in this and other communities is that when a green space, be it a park, trail or other such resource, is provided for its citizens, it’s not so much the encouragement that they may have been exposed too that leads to a more active lifestyle; it’s the resource provided!
This is evident by the use of the trails that have been developed in Baxter, as well as the Cuyuna mountain bike trail system developed near Crosby/Ironton, the Nordic ski trails in the Brainerd Lakes Area (when we have snow!), the Paul Bunyan Trail, the East Gull Lake Trails, our city parks, swimming beaches, the Northland Arboretum ... I’m sure I’m leaving one or two out. Another example is, this season the Brainerd Nordic Ski Club introduced a Youth Ski League (In conjunction with the MN Youth Ski League) for kids between the ages of 4-14. We wanted a modest start for this inaugural year, so we didn’t advertise outside of “word of mouth.” We’d thought we’d have 20-25 kids sign up. 50 kids signed on! This activity and program involves not just the kids, but the whole family. I believe the area’s development of a “trails” resource played a big part in the impetus for the over whelming number of kids that signed on to this program.
So again, thanks to the Brainerd Rotary Club, as well as the Brainerd City Council & staff, for their commitment to community and recognizing the need to take advantage of the rich abundance of natural resources available for us and our visitors here in the Brainerd Lakes Area to enjoy for years to come.
