Open Forum: Support Occupy Wall Street?

Posted: November 11, 2011 - 6:28pm

If you support OWS in their quest for free College, $20 minimum wage, and free health insurance, you’re in good company.
Just look at who is also supporting these radicals: The Communist Party of USA, American Nazi Party, Revolutionary Communist Party, Black Panthers, Nation of Islam Louis Farrakhan, Iran’s Ayatollah Khomeini, Hugo Chavez, and the Communist Party of China.
Boy, I’d sure be proud to be associated with groups like these.

As I read that 'letter' I was wondering...Bill or Art?

I'm also wondering how much the Kochs pay for writers to influence national thinking with stuff like this.

Interesting...

How can Khomeini support the OCCUPY movement? He's been dead since 1989.

fairness, wolf

Why do we get almost 0% interest on our bank savings while bank credit card companies charge almost 30% interest?

Art: how is that GOP campaign going for 2012? You know, Cain, Perry, Newt, Mitt, Michele?

Try paying attention,

wolf. Does economic justice ring a bell? Concentration of wealth to a degree not seen since just before the Great Depression, young people in debt acquiring an education to advance their skills and job prospets but few good jobs available, and a political party more bent on destroying a president than helping the nation get to work. Not hard to understand why the Republican Congress favorability rating stands at 7%.

Lake - Does that really need

Lake - Does that really need explaination? It's all about risk.

If you are paying 30% interest on a CC, then you're a fool, or have bad credit. Anyone with good credit should be paying no more than 5 - 8%

Chey - There are a lot of good jobs out there. Many companies just don't need Art Historians, Poets, and Street Mimes.

But if you're really "proud to be associated with" groups like The Communist Party of USA, American Nazi Party, Revolutionary Communist Party, Black Panthers, Nation of Islam Louis Farrakhan, Iran’s Ayatollah Khomeini, Hugo Chavez, and the Communist Party of China", tell it to someone who cares what you think.

Democrats and Liberals

are either completely stupid or have their heads buried in the sand! Here are a couple of headlines about the "Occupy" rabid radicals: Deaths at Occupy camps bring pressure for shutdown;
OAKLAND, Calif. Occupy Oakland has voted to deposit $20,000 with Wells Fargo & Co. - just days after Occupy protesters shattered windows of one of the bank's downtown Oakland branches during the group's attempt to stage a general strike in the city; More evidence the OWS movement is devolving into a cheering section for establishment Democrats;
Who makes up the 99 percent? The #OWS data reveal that the majority of respondents are male, white, in their 20s to mid-30s, but earn less than the typical American.;
Nazis and Communists Throw Their Support Behind Occupy Wall Street Movements;
The 99%: Official list of Occupy Wall Street’s supporters, sponsors and sympathizers:

Perhaps

pdnet, you could direct us to the snopes link indicating this is something other than another right-wing fairy tale. Btw, an analysis of tea-party constituents (cheering section for the republican party) showed them to be intheir 50's or 60's and many on federal programs of one kind or another.

I never said this was from Snopes. And you wouldn't know the truth if it kicked you in the a@#$! As for those federal programs, you mean like Social Security and Medicare. The ones that they actually worked for, unlike the lazy bobble heads who spend weeks sitting in a park, banging a drum, hanging out with their new friends- the homeless.

I see. Mr. Becker in the letter refers specifically to KHOMEINI. The present day spiritual leader of Iran is Ali Khamenei. Minor difference? I don't know. I wonder if its like getting OLSON and NELSON mixed up in Minnesota....

It's always great...

To see people condemning what they don't even know about.
Here ya go- for those that have no idea what the Occupy Wall Street movement stands for-

Declaration of the Occupation of New York City
THIS DOCUMENT WAS ACCEPTED BY THE NYC GENERAL ASSEMBLY ON SEPTEMBER 29, 2011

As we gather together in solidarity to express a feeling of mass injustice, we must not lose sight of what brought us together. We write so that all people who feel wronged by the corporate forces of the world can know that we are your allies.
As one people, united, we acknowledge the reality: that the future of the human race requires the cooperation of its members; that our system must protect our rights, and upon corruption of that system, it is up to the individuals to protect their own rights, and those of their neighbors; that a democratic government derives its just power from the people, but corporations do not seek consent to extract wealth from the people and the Earth; and that no true democracy is attainable when the process is determined by economic power. We come to you at a time when corporations, which place profit over people, self-interest over justice, and oppression over equality, run our governments. We have peaceably assembled here, as is our right, to let these facts be known.

They have taken our houses through an illegal foreclosure process, despite not having the original mortgage.
They have taken bailouts from taxpayers with impunity, and continue to give Executives exorbitant bonuses.
They have perpetuated inequality and discrimination in the workplace based on age, the color of one’s skin, sex, gender identity and sexual orientation.
They have poisoned the food supply through negligence, and undermined the farming system through monopolization.
They have profited off of the torture, confinement, and cruel treatment of countless animals, and actively hide these practices.
They have continuously sought to strip employees of the right to negotiate for better pay and safer working conditions.
They have held students hostage with tens of thousands of dollars of debt on education, which is itself a human right.
They have consistently outsourced labor and used that outsourcing as leverage to cut workers’ healthcare and pay.
They have influenced the courts to achieve the same rights as people, with none of the culpability or responsibility.
They have spent millions of dollars on legal teams that look for ways to get them out of contracts in regards to health insurance.
They have sold our privacy as a commodity.
They have used the military and police force to prevent freedom of the press. They have deliberately declined to recall faulty products endangering lives in pursuit of profit.
They determine economic policy, despite the catastrophic failures their policies have produced and continue to produce.
They have donated large sums of money to politicians, who are responsible for regulating them.
They continue to block alternate forms of energy to keep us dependent on oil.
They continue to block generic forms of medicine that could save people’s lives or provide relief in order to protect investments that have already turned a substantial profit.
They have purposely covered up oil spills, accidents, faulty bookkeeping, and inactive ingredients in pursuit of profit.
They purposefully keep people misinformed and fearful through their control of the media.
They have accepted private contracts to murder prisoners even when presented with serious doubts about their guilt.
They have perpetuated colonialism at home and abroad. They have participated in the torture and murder of innocent civilians overseas.
They continue to create weapons of mass destruction in order to receive government contracts. *
To the people of the world,
We, the New York City General Assembly occupying Wall Street in Liberty Square, urge you to assert your power.
Exercise your right to peaceably assemble; occupy public space; create a process to address the problems we face, and generate solutions accessible to everyone.
To all communities that take action and form groups in the spirit of direct democracy, we offer support, documentation, and all of the resources at our disposal.
Join us and make your voices heard!
*These grievances are not all-inclusive.

Norway

Has free college, $20.00 minimum wage and universal health care. They pay about 40% in taxes.

And, Art, that snopes thingy is the new email red light indicating a falsehood.

This link is to a republican fan wing website, but it has links to source endorsements of the OWS by less than desirables.

Anyone who hasn't seen the bulk of these endorsements has not been paying much attention.

Taxes and inflation

go hand in hand. Sure Norway has entitlements that we don't have here but they are also paying for it through high taxes and in the end it all balances out. 20.00/hour minimum wage is still the low end of the pay scale and those who are at the low end still struggle to meet their needs because the costs for goods and services also are high. Also in Norway and other Scandinavian countries it is mandatory that you put in two years of military service. We all know how that went over.

@JohnBrown

Most of the links I looked at were simply commentary on the OWS movement. I remember Mobil oil (before they merged) a few decades ago running a series of full page ads in mainstream magazines thanking Karl Marx for his 'insights into capitalism.' By today's standards I suppose this would have made Mobile Oil communist sympathizers.

Fact is, the financial plutocracy-- Koch Brothers et al -- cannot address the real issues raised by the young people who populate the OWS movement and so they will try to discredit and distract via their wing-nut noise machine. And, of course, there are always those 'loyal followers' who have nothing better to do than suck up to the financial elites.

I was there, lakelander...

And yes, there's a photo of the man you mention... its in the "We Spotted" part of the paper, and also connected with the story about the demonstration in the news section of the Monday Dispatch. The man certainly may have had no problem with his bank, grammar aside. That's part of the point... its not that corporations are all-evil, but they are misusing the public in some of their policies to the point that many of the public are very concerned over those policies.

was so far off Washington street, I doubt anyone knew he was there. A prop hired by the bank, I suspect.
