What you are about to read is alarming and dumbfounding.
“Monkey” jokes and “monkey” cartoons abound in South Carolina.
The South Carolina legislature refuses to take down the Confederate flag flying over the state capital.
Now, the rest of the story. While at Middleton Plantation (900 slaves) in Charleston, S.C., I asked the tour guide/historian how plantation owners controlled the slaves when they weren’t whipping and/or hanging them. She told me to talk to her, privately, at the end of the tour. I, absolutely, had no idea about the “revelation” I would be told.
This elderly woman told my wife and me that plantation owners made “Christians” of the slaves so they (slaves were property) would “obey” their “masters,” whether that be God or their “bosses” on the plantation.
As a Christian I was shocked and dismayed.
On my second tour of the Middleton Plantation (as seen on “The Patriot”) we were told that African-American preachers were paid a $50 bonus each year to preach the Gospel. Of the bonuses that were paid to black leaders on the plantation, black preachers were paid the most. Bonuses ranged from $2.50/year to $50/year.
Back to 2010-2011. Hearing whites (there’s a lot of “rednecks” in S.C.) and “Christian” businessmen at country clubs, by their mockery, suggest that African-Americans evolved from apes and that “they” were born of God suggests a combination of stupidity, cruelty, extreme racism and convoluted ideologies (theologies) regarding evolution vs. creationism. President Obama evolved from apes but white people were instantly created by God? Think about it!
The moral of this true story: The Confederate flag must come down immediately. As white/Christian human beings, we should be ashamed and embarrassed.
