Just a reminder that everyone should send thank-you notes to their representatives, for raising property taxes, which of course lowered property values. I remember when property taxes were very high and property values were very low. I know that the legislators will say we didn’t raise property taxes, however they lowered the LGA which was given to the Local Governments to lower property taxes. They also put more services back on the local government or lowered the portion that the state pays for shared responsibilities. So you speculators or investors, if you prefer you lost value and you pay more taxes.
You might want to thank your congressman for the higher price of gasoline. I realize that he isn’t entirely to blame but gasoline like gold has the same value however the dollar is sliding down and one big reason is the threat that the debt ceiling won’t be raised. The sellers of oil, whether they be Arabs, Norwegians, Brazilians, Canadians, Mexicans or who ever, want the same value that they got when the dollar was highly valued.
You may also, want to express your opinion on his views on changing Medicare so that the poor and lower middle class will be priced out of it. A voucher to pay 45 percent of the cost of private health care plans won’t help most. They will just throw it away and buy food and pay for shelter as long as they can, if they get sick and charity isn’t available they will die. But then we all have to go some time, rationing by how much you have in the bank is what most poor undeveloped countries do.

Back to the dark ages
I strongly disagree with the writer of the April 27 Open Forum: Let the voters decide. I personally find it astonishing and deplorable that Rep. Gazelka is choosing to focus his newly elected energy on, of all things, a constitutional amendment banning same sex marriage. Currently in Minnesota we have many other issues that need attending to! I would love to see Mr. Gazelka energized around promoting jobs in our community, creating futures for our children by properly funding our schools, or working to provide services for the elderly and vulnerable. He is polarizing our community instead of promoting the positive progress we so badly need right now. He is also turning a human rights issue into a popularity contest. It is pretty apparent what would occur if the overwhelmingly heterosexual populous voted on this issue. A trip back in history reminds us that most human rights issues were not popular during that particular historical time. Imagine for a moment where we would be if the White majority had voted on equal rights for the Black minority in the early 1960s. Or think where we would be if, in 1920, men across the United States voted on allowing women the right to vote. And a quick trip back to our junior high years would remind us that the popular thing to do is not always the right thing to do. So Mr. Gazelka, please use your new found leadership to lead us all into a brighter future instead of using your might to send us reeling back to the dark ages.

Stevenson’s common sense
The column of Taylor Stevenson of April 29th demonstrated uncommon common sense from a young man more mature than his years.
Politicians often pander and even win elections with wedge issues. But we will not build stronger communities or a better state by wedge issues that divide rather than unite. And a majority who feels they have the right to stomp on the rights of the minority is sad indeed not just for the minorities, but for all of us.

Add commentAsk Rep. Craavack why he voted to eliminate Medicare
Chip Craavack voted for those underfunded Medicare vouchers.
He's opening an office in Brainerd so now we can ask him why he voted to make health care unaffordable for seniors.
We can also ask him to give up his taxpayer subsidized health care until Medicare is fixed.
the young are telling us to not build discrimination
into our state Constitution......
this is something they will have to undo after a generation dies off because they see all people as equal and deserving of basic human rights.
Aren't we all supposed to be
Aren't we all supposed to be A-OK and dancing in the poppy fields now that we have ObamaCare?
The problem is
only a few elements of Obama Cares have actually started, I have self-employed business friends that cannot afford insurance, for themselves, or their employees.....they would LOVE to buy into some insurance pools and get access to affordable health care.
Health care companies are eager to widen the base, and are preparing for that right now.
This Medicare voucher thing would be a mess without giving people access to affordable health care. If it's too expensive they will pass on using the voucher and not have insurance, and end up in the ER, or die.
We need to fix health care. Whopee for those that have it, but woe to those who want health care and can't afford it (yet.)

Won't seniors be able to buy into the pools?
health care reform has forced the health care co's to
create these pools........which they are now eager to do.......
just saying - the health care reform act has some good stuff, like the pre-existing condition clause, people can get insurance without being penalized, keeping children under your policy until age 26, etc.etc.
The county and the teachers TRIED to create these pools (with lots of their members) a few years ago and the legislature denied this request.....how stupid is that? it appears they thought that this method would interfere 'with the free market.'
Medicare Part D legislation by GWB also said drugs could not be purchased other than certain drug companies. Expand the base and lower the cost. DUH.
"keeping children under your
"keeping children under your policy until age 26,"
You should say "forcing you to keep you kids on your policy (if they have none other available) until age 26 or be penalized." What if you kick the kid out at 18 because he's a bad egg?
My favorite part is having the IRS involved, and deternining if your insurance is good enough, or too good, and on top of that tossing out fines and penalties. But I hear that new section will create approx. 17,000 new jobs.
Wolf,
is that 17,000 new jobs private or public?
IRS jobs.
IRS jobs.
Yeah,
That's what I thought. We need more people on some kind of government paycheck. At least if they earn it they can spend it at a Farmers market unlike some freeloaders!
why?
why are we NOT drilling more? why won't anyone suggest a better way to fix medicare other then blast ryans proposal? why are we borrowing 40 cents of every dollar spent? why is medicaid totally underfunded? is it possible democrats want someone else to pay for their giveaways? the problem with democrats(socialists) is they run out of someone else's money!
My it kinda looks like S.S.
My it kinda looks like S.S. is getting some of the money back, that the republican gov, stole from it,during the bush dynasty, to pay the extra for medicare.

There is a difference to talking "hillbilly" and just not knowing how to type. Your just an uneducated old man sucking off the government teat while pretending that you have it all together. You start off by throwing insults and names around but when it comes back, you get defensive. I'd say grow up, but you never did, you just got old and used up.
pucknet;Ihave to laugh,when
pucknet;Ihave to laugh, when you said i sucked off the gov teat.I paid both halves of my S.S. deductions for 23 years, plus half of my employes.I suppose getting some of it back is sucking the gov. teat. I very well may halve paid more in taxes in 1 year than you payed in 10.
I do get a little lax with my spelling on this rag,but someone punched the keys for me for 20years,and because i am 75 years old i am allowed to make a few mistakes.
Ya know i done this with high school education. You paid thousands of dollars a for meaning less collage degree, and compare your life with mine an see who was the smartest.
