Open forum: Are we a ‘Selfish Society?’

Posted: February 18, 2011 - 7:38pm

Yesterday in the news two Midwestern politicians declared emphatically, “We’re broke!” Minnesota Republican Party Chair Tony Sutton and Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, both argued their case for drastic measures to cut state expenditures. In this angry political winter, apparently “any lie will do” as loud voices shout their talking points Cut spending! Keep your money! Low taxes mean more jobs!

We are a prosperous nation. Wealthy beyond anything previously known on earth. But we also are becoming selfish and insensitive to anyone in need. Unwilling to suggest any shared sacrifice or fairness, when it comes to recognizing human obligations. We are far from broke.

From municipality to township to county, state, and nation — all across America — there’s enough wealth within our borders to provide decent support for the most vulnerable among us. Shame on the hypocrites who try to persuade us otherwise!

Gov.Dayton has addressed Minnesota’s deficit with a balanced and fair budget — with spending reductions and revenue increases. Republicans dogmatically reject any revenue increase from the individual income tax and insist that only spending cuts to education, health and human services must cover the billions of dollars in deficits and overdue deficiency payments, that have accumulated over years to reach a crisis.

Gov. Walker across the border in Wisconsin has declared war on the bargaining rights of his public employees — in the name of eliminating a budget deficit about half the size of Minnesota’s. With conservatives in control of the executive and legislative branches of Wisconsin government, Walker hopes to roll back a legacy of progressive labor rights and achieve a balanced budget by cutting the take-home pay and pensions of state workers.

Time was when we aspired to be a “Great Society.” The threat in our state capitols today is the drift toward a “Selfish Society.”

Too much money has been "redistributed"

The top 1% are now hoarding 25% of the nations wealth thanks to the Republicans. Even some Democrats have participated in the "redistribution. That's why the economy is stagnating. Too much money has been taken out of the pockets of the working class. It's happened all over the globe and that's largely why people are rising up.

Studies show that based on percentage of wealth working class Americans pay more in taxes than the wealthy.

Make taxes equal between working class Americans and the wealthiest and workers will have the money to buy things again.

Look at every "poor" country across the globe and you'll see the same thing. A very few wealthy people controlling most of the nations wealth leaving the masses too poor to buy anything. America isn't completely there yet but we are well on the way.

Make taxes equal

Fishhead, you say "make taxes equal between working class Americans and the wealthiest"! Does this mean that we should have a flat tax, say 15% on everyones income so that everyone pays the same and the lowest approximately 50% will now pay something rather than the nothing they now pay?

The New Way???

Is this the new way we do things in america? When the majority demands change and votes in a majority and the minority doesn't agree with the changes they simply riot and disrupt the whole system? And with the blessing of the president and his thug machine they bring in a rent a mob? The leftist 60s radicals and the unions are going to make this a very interesting year. What will the POTUS do when we the majority go Egypt on him? Shoot us in the street like dogs?

Good Op

I think we have become a selfish society.

Look at some of those teachers in Wisconsin for instance. They are not on board with any shared sacrifice. They are calling in sick from work to walk around Madison with vitriolic and offensive signs. Meanwhile schools are being shut down, students not being educated, and parents forced to miss work to watch their children. The selfish teachers are creating a lot of unnecessary unshared sacrifices because of their refusal to temporarily pay for 12% of their health insurance and half their pension.

Meanwhile, in Minnesota, our governor has presented a budget that nearly doubles the tax rates on a minority of our population. I'm glad these people aren't in St Paul committing crimes and participating in hate speech. It's probably because they are unselfish and understand that desperate times call for desperate measures. So, I guess we aren't all selfish. We could all learn a thing or two from Minnesota's highest earners.

You're missing the point.

You're missing the point. The union DID say they were prepared to share some of the pain by paying more.

The sticking point is that Walker wants to bust the union by taking away workers bargaining rights. That has NOTHING to do with today's budget NOTHING.

He's also got some other unrelated details hidden in the bill.

If Madison was closer I would be there today.

Taxes should be based on

Taxes should be based on ability to pay. Too much of our tax code allows the hiding of wealth.

I've read that the hedge fund managers who make a BILLION dollars each year only pay 15% tax on those billions because that source of wealth is treated differently than payroll income.

Imagine what your payroll tax would be if you were paid that much in payroll. Why should we pay extra to make up for that loss in tax revenue?

Not missing the point

I was commenting on the accuracy of this opinion piece. Mr Prickett unintentionally hit the nail on the head with this. Most people are selfish.

As far as the public employee unions in Wisconsin being willing to share in the sacrifice. Good for them. I wish I could give each and every one of them a gold star.

One question though, did these highly intelligent incredibly caring people not know that there was a ugly budget situation looming? It seems to me that most people who aren't insulated from reality know that states are having budget issues. It seems almost fake that they would offer to negotiate only after the harsh reality of shared sacrifice hit.

taxes, schmaxes

when i read what my friends said about the taxes, i said to myself, "these boys is missing the point!". If a wealthy business man has too many taxes, he will not hire folk's, and then the unemployed. There is no reason for this. I think the rich should not pay at all, that would make sure we all had jobs, but ONLY if they get rid of the unions. nothing has hurt the worker more in our history. unions have made for less safety on the job, longer hour's, no overtime, young children working in the factory. you can look it up!

for me, i say let the unions fall apart. the wisconsin labor union and it's agenda is one think we do not need here. Sure we get it, the budget is bad, but raising taxes on the rich is no way to balance the budget.

Thank god we live in a land where still they're is a way to protect, we can bare arms and protect ourselfs from the gomment.

Fish,
You stated the same exact thing a couple months ago and I posted all the links that proved your statement was incorrect and you admitted you were mistaken. Now you are posting the exact same thing again.

It has everything to do with today's budget. Walker is smart enough to know that if they retain their bargaining power, we will be right back where we are now in a few years. As minnesnowduh would say in her typical condescending fashion, "Duh."

Gordon, I wish I could shake your hand.

We are not a poor starving third world country. We owe organized labor the higher wages and benefits and safety measures that they have won for all of us, whether we are members or not. We have grown used to a safe work environment, and take it for granted that we will always have it. If unions are eliminated who will speak up for the American worker? I have no wise answers, but I know Gordon is a kind person to put people ahead of profit. I would be proud to call him a friend.
If you read Forbes article on Effective Corporate Tax Rates for the Top 25 companies, you will find that the 15% lowest rate for Americans is MORE than any of those companies pay. So all their moaning about high corporate taxes is just a smokescreen. The newly elected Senator from Wisc. uses Prison labor in his company. He eliminated jobs which working Wisconsinites needed. And, oh yes, he still manages to be a millionaire. Maybe someone knows what his tax rate is. I come from a family of teachers who are not greedy and overpaid. After reading these comments, I am proud to stand by my teachers and would go to Wisconsin to show my support if I could.

How unselfish of you

Evergreen,

We need more unselfish people like you. I'm glad you are willing to stick up for your family! Most people are too selfish and tend to look for a "them" to blame. Say, corporations or Senators for example.

Bye bye safe working conditions

Evergreen. Excellent post. The federal laws that are supposed to duplicate union protection are almost useless unless you are independently wealthy and can fight through the court system on your own dollar. And then....should you make it all the way to the Supreme Court the Roberts led court will side with the corporation against you just like they have consistently been doing.

llr, I believe you are mistaken about showing me some link that says there are not hedge fund managers making a billion dollars a year. I'd like to see it if you have one.

I heard those 2 numbers from Robert Reich's speech last summer and trust that he knows what he's talking about.

Divide and conquer strategy at work

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/robert-reich/the-republican-strategy_b_825...

"The Republican strategy is to split the vast middle and working class -- pitting unionized workers against non-unionized, public-sector workers against non-public, older workers within sight of Medicare and Social Security against younger workers who don't believe these programs will be there for them, and the poor against the working middle class."

Wisconsin

Wisconsin needs their public employees working and paying taxes. They make less at every level of education than private employees.
Plus:
According to the Wisconsin Department of Revenue, two-thirds of corporations in the state pay no taxes, and the share of corporate tax revenue funding the state government has fallen by half since 1981.

So let those public employees be allowed to have rights so they can make up for the corporations who pay no taxes. Lowering corporation taxes appears to be unneccesary as 66% don't have to pay them anyway.

bye bye middle class

Everything I am reading confirms that the poor continue to get more poor and the rich continue to get richer. Economics 101 will confirm that with no middle class (no one to buy things!!!) that this country is in big trouble. Our middle class is struggling. Anyone not concerned with that, should be.

middle class

http://money.cnn.com/2011/02/16/news/economy/middle_class/index.htm

Incomes for 90% of Americans have been stuck in neutral, and it's not just because of the Great Recession. Middle-class incomes have been stagnant for at least a generation, while the wealthiest tier has surged ahead at lighting speed.

If you don't think that

If you don't think that busting the unions won't affect you as a non-union worker you're not seeing the big picture.

This is a push to roll back worker rights and wages across the nation. With Justices Scalia and Thomas in bed with the Koch brothers it will be easy to roll back worker rights for all of us.

40 hour week. GONE! Want to spend time with your family. Well boo hoo.

Protection from dangerous work environment. GONE! Don't like it? Tough. You're fired and your kids don't eat.

Maternity leave. GONE! Get a sitter and get back to work or you're fired.

This the result of the Citizen's United ruling that gave our election system over to Corporate America and Corporate Transnationals. They used that ruling to buy elections and install Republican governors who would bust unions and roll back worker rights.

Scalia and Thomas have been meeting behind closed doors with the Koch brothers.

What are you going to say when they come for you?

Maybe it's time to let the US fail!

Maybe we should let the US fail and that way all the pensions, programs, government employees, civil rights, personal freedoms and the highest standard of living the world has ever known will be gone. I'm quite sure that will make some of the people who post here very, very happy.

"Protected" unions join the fight

GREAT NEWS!

Now the unions that Governor Walker protected from his union busting effort are joining forces with the unions that he is attacking. He deliberately omitted the unions that supported him from his union busting attack.

Evidently his re-election is more important than his beliefs.

I was wrong!

I was wrong llr. There are ONLY 13 hedge fund managers who average a BILLION or more each year. My apology.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/robert-reich/the-republican-strategy_b_825...

"Last year, America's top thirteen hedge-fund managers earned an average of $1 billion each. One of them took home $5 billion. Much of their income is taxed as capital gains -- at 15 percent -- due to a tax loophole that Republican members of Congress have steadfastly guarded."

Now.....let's go after those greedy American workers and forget all about Wall Street.
