Perhaps the best way to start this writing is a little from the end. In an article James Michener indicated that in his world travels people were constantly asking for his help in getting into America.
He had great things to say about our presidential election process. The lack of a need for tanks to enforce the will of the people, and how the Supreme Court and Congress continued on with business as usual, was a miracle.
The day to day news for our country indicates some difficult times ahead. The unemployment picture has to be a big concern for anyone who has to be without it; and also with one who might feel able to help relieve it at all. Michener did allude to the danger of people adopting an all for themselves attitude, but really calls for workers and potential employers to put their heads together, to do what is best for America.
How could we not get in a few words about education, perhaps using Michener as kind of a savior; especially with the way American education is getting such a beating these days. He quit arguing with the naysayers by indicating we were trying to do what nobody else was doing. We are making education available to everyone, and graduating many more at the top end - and of course, many with low scores too.
It is interesting to note that many of Michener's comments are very similar to problems we have today, and were quoted in a 1982 issue of Nation's Business. It is also interesting to note, despite our many problems our leaders are frequently contacted by people asking for help to get into America!
