I recently heard on a local radio station that “this news segment is brought to you by the Minnesota DNR!”
The DNR spokesman went on to tout the wonderful natural resources of Minnesota, and encouraged listeners to get out on the lakes, etc. This is outrageous!
Since when has the DNR so much extra money that they can get into the advertising business? Have they turned into MPR?
Our tax dollars and license fees fund the activities of the DNR, and they have no business sponsoring anything, especially in these tough economic times. They also have no right to be in the realty business, purchasing islands on public waters and other properties in order to prohibit public use.
Every season we hear the cry that they do not have enough funds to conduct their work and are understaffed in the field, yet the majority of DNR employees reside in offices in St. Paul.
I hope many others will contact our State Legislators to put an end to someone’s idea of responsible spending within the Minnesota DNR. Enough is enough.

Try getting in the 21st century Toni. We realize it's a big leap from the 19th.
Hey Cheyenne43
I think that Tony is in the 21st century. He is 100% correct (if I was like a lot of 21st centurians I would say 110%).
The DNR has no need to pay for advertising. They are so hard up that they are being required to sell some of their WMA's and who knows what else. If they need more money, let them raise our user fees for licenses and etc!!!
Cheyenne wrong as ususal
Agree with oldandretired-- they have no business advertising as they are short on funds for their day to day operations and are about as inefficient as the post office in most everything they do and undertake.
my take
Believe it or not, part of the DNR's job is promoting fishing and hunting for our state and to bring in more revenue. With that said, they have totally the opposite by scaring everyone away from fishing and hunting.
I think MN needs to follow suit with WI and maybe threaten budget cuts, especially since they get their funding with no questions asks even if only 1 person buys a licesnse. If they dont quit being the scare police take it away, they need a reality check that the small mans disease they currently have is actually bad for our state.
We have
a Tourism Dept. already, nathanberg.
Since when should other state TAX funded departments advertise for themselves with our own money? WHO are they selling to? Us?
And cheyanne, learn to spell. Too busy spouting poop from the left or what?
And cheyanne, learn to spell.
"And cheyanne, learn to spell. " ROFLMAO!!!!
Now the DNR is going to be running around to all the fish houses on area lakes checking for underage drinking. I'd rather see that time spent on policing snowmobilers.
Do Both
Personally Fish I would prefer them to do both.
Personally Fish I would prefer they stick to game laws
Ever hear of explore Minnesota.com? Let them promote the state. The DNR is a bloated bureaucratic mess. How about trimming some fat down in St Paul? In one breath the Game Wardens are stretched so thin and the next they are expanding there power to every aspect of law enforcement. They already have way to much power but at least they have to knock before they come into your fish house when your in bed sleeping or whatever. That was so benevolent of them.

Uninformed Tony and Friends
Those in business realize that advertising increases revenue, even if a business is in trouble it can not stop advertising or sales slow, revenue shrinks, and business goes under. The key is ensuring proper cost/benefit analysis so that what is spent for these spots on MPR will come back to the department in the form of increase in revenue through greater sales of park passes, licenses, and trail stickers. Dont knock them for spending money unless you know they are not getting adequate revenue in return. Glad to see if the DNR is advertising that it's on MPR.
UNinformed rejo
The letter writer did NOT say the DNR was advertising on MPR. The writer asked if the the DNR had turned into (publicly funded radio) MPR.
And I remain UNimpressed with your defense of them, the bloated DNR, Department of Natural Restrictions, where NOTHING is promoted, everything is discouraged, and it all costs too much.
It's curious that the DNR acts puzzled as to why fish and game license sales go down each year. They need look no further than their own efforts to squash and discourage ANYONE from actually using or enjoying our natural rersources. Control freaks run amok.
It's obvious they have too much of our money when we have 5 times the population of South Dakota, but spend 40 TIMES what they do on their DNR budget.
Lil dumber
The letter clearly complains of the DNR spending public funds to "sponsor" a portion of MPR, that's called advertising my friend. At no point was there a defense of any DNR policy just encouraging the writer to get all the facts
If you have been to South Dakota to enjoy the outdoors the discrepancy you mention is obvious. Your clever play on words and use of the caps lock key are impressive, but hardly a rebuttal.
What???
You should read it again rejo. Maybe more than once. The letter clearly complains about the DNR spending money to sponsor a segment of the news, not MPR.
are you kidding dean?
You state : "The letter clearly complains about the DNR spending money to sponsor a segment of the news, not MPR"
I Stated: "The letter clearly complains of the DNR spending public funds to "sponsor" a portion of MPR,
Same statement.... so maybe you are the one that should read a little more careful. At no point do I reference the letter in regard to complaing about MPR.
