Take a look (and get) Klicked!™

By: Denton Newman Jr | Blog: Denton Newman's Blog

One of the favorite features for many people to visit on our website was Spotted®. We started using Spotted® to share (and make available for purchase) more of the great photos our staff and photographers were shooting at events, news scenes and sporting activities with our readers in 2005 when our previous owner, Morris Communications Co. released it for use. With our sale to Forum Communications Co. this year, we lost the use of Spotted®, but we have been hard at work finding and shaping a...

Hi, Just letting you know of the status' of the BrainerdDispatch.com and PineAndLake.com websites since our move to Forum Communications servers on Friday. We are aware of issue with the BrainerdDispatch.com navigation bar text in Firefox. If you are having this and an update of your javascript doesn't take care of it, a temporary work around is to type in a forward slash and then the section name after the BrainerdDispatch.com url in your address bar at the top of the window. Example: http://...

The future of commenting

By: Denton Newman Jr | Blog: Denton Newman's Blog

Freewheeling reader comments, unedited and unattributable may be coming to an end. I sat in on a weekly company technology conference call last week. One of the items on the agenda was a report regarding another of our company's news operations and their switch to requiring all comments to be attributed by real name and commenting only allowed by subscribers. These two requirements go hand-in-hand because the paid subscription information is where the real name is pulled from.

Let's give religion discussion a rest

By: Mike O'Rourke | Blog: Mike O'Rourke's Blog

For several weeks The Brainerd Dispatch's Commentary section has been the venue of an ongoing debate on whether or not God exists. Personally, I've grown tired of the back-and-forth arguments and I suspect I'm not the only reader who is weary of the correspondence. I'm not saying the topic of the existence of God isn't important, but is this truly how we want to use the valuable editorial real estate the Dispatch offers its readers each day?

I put a call out to you, the readers, for area moms who are constantly on the go. I heard about some amazing women out there who work hard to keep their families going. I picked Darla Johnson from Crosslake to follow on Wednesday.

Shining a light on mental illness

By: Jessica Larsen | Blog: Jessica Larsen's Blog

In Sunday's paper you'll find the first of a two-part series on mental illness in the Brainerd lakes area. The second part will run Monday. Here's a little about what you'll read: They are your neighbors. Your coworkers. Your best friends. But there’s something you may not know about them: they have a mental illness. Nearly half of U.S. adults will develop at least one mental illness during their lifetime, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Yet many of those people will...
