It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas

By: Sarah Nelson Ka... | Blog: Sarah Nelson's Blog

I've never had a snowy Christmas. I know for most Minnesotans that is not only shocking, but borders on horrifying. What can I say? I grew up in Northern California. My neighbors put Christmas lights in their palm trees. I've lived in Minnesota for a grand total of 16 months and am heading into my second real winter. Ever. Last winter I learned a few things about living in the snow, driving in the snow and walking in the snow. Some of my "lessons" were painful. Some were expensive. All remind...

Christmas Lights -Christmas in Wadena

By: Steve Kohls | Blog: Steve Kohls's Blog

Photographers looking for a challenge should try their skill with GP Anderson's display at 414 3rd St. S.W. in Wadena. Anderson has added computer animation to the display synched with music. You can tune into the radio station with the songs and watch the lights. The tough part is being in the right place at the right time. With certain songs you need to be ready with your camera at certain locations at the display.

Waste of time or true delight

By: Jeremy Millsop | Blog: Jeremy Millsop's Blog

There is a reason the word fan is in fanatic. And other than Justin Bieber or Lady Gaga fans, no group of people are more fanatical than sports fans.Painted chests, rusted, 30-year old Winnebagos decked out in team colors and flags, the use of “we” when referring to the person’s favorite team are prime diagnosis for sports fanatics. More proof of the lunacy are the questions they ask themselves.

Changing political tides

By: Mike O'Rourke | Blog: Mike O'Rourke's Blog

Political shifts ebb and flow like ocean tides and in the Brainerd area there's no event where that's more apparent than the Brainerd Lakes Chamber's Eggs and Issues session that previews the upcoming legislative session. The next Eggs and Issues is from 7:30 to 9 a.m. Friday at the Lodge at Brainerd Lakes and after the shake-up from the 2010 election Rep. John Ward, DFL-Brainerd, will be the lone Democrat lawmaker at this session. It if wasn't for Ward's gregarious manner we'd label him the...

That's right people, I have a blog!

By: Kelly Humphrey | Blog: Kelly Humphrey's Blog

I now have a blog.  I can't believe it. The powers that be have been threatening to give us blogs for a while now so I shouldn't be so shocked about the whole thing.  And yet I found myself surprised about the prospect.  As a photographer I don't write a lot - mostly captions and an odd story or two. "This will be neat," I thought to myself.  "They'll be paying me to talk about myself."   The more I thought about it, the more excited I became.  "I have lots of...

Just Keep Running

By: Sarah Nelson Ka... | Blog: Sarah Nelson's Blog

I just completed my fourth marathon. I was feeling pretty good about my accomplishment until I talked to my chiropractor. She must be doing her marathon research because she told me: "The average person can run two marathons in their lifetime before they start to do permanent damage to their body." Let's just hope I'm not average.

Heisman Trophy

By: Mike Bialka | Blog: Mike Bialka's Blog

I voted for Cam Newton of Auburn for the Heisman Trophy. I don't recall being as torn as to who to vote for as this year. Newton is the nation's top college football player but comes with baggage. His father was accused of working with the owner of a scouting service to receive up to $180,000 for his son to play for Mississippi State while the quarterback was being recruited out of junior college in 2009. The NCAA cleared Cam, saying neither he nor Auburn knew anything about the alleged payment.

DeLynn Howard

What's in a (nick)name?

By: DeLynn Howard | Blog: DeLynn Howard's Blog

My mom and dad call me Punkin. And no, that's not a misspelling. It's not Pumpkin, like what you carve at Halloween or the pie you eat at Thanksgiving. It's just Punkin. It never really bothered me much growing up. Lots of people have nicknames, right? My Grandpa Trowbridge called me Swede. I have no idea why. I'm not sure if I ever heard him even call me by name. My Grandma Trowbridge called me DeLynnda. In fact, she suggested that as my birth name but my parents went with just DeLynn (which...

Jerry Kill

By: Mike Bialka | Blog: Mike Bialka's Blog

I wish new Gophers football coach Jerry Kill the best. He has a monumental rebuilding job ahead of him. Under Tim Brewster "Gopher Nation" became "Gopher Township." I'm happy Jerry didn't echo a few phrases that his predecessors did, like "Geezo-beezo" or "My corpuscles are jumping and my heart is pumping" or "We're going to win Big Ten championships sooner rather than later." Kill seems like a down-home, down-to-earth, home-spun country boy and came off genuinely humble. He needs to ditch that...
