Sen. Feinstein targets semi-automatic guns, including the ORemington 7400

Posted: January 29, 2013 - 10:31pm

One of the most outrageous displays of government overreach was trotted out on the floor of the United States Senate last week by anti-gun activist California’s Democratic Sen. Diane Feinstein. She wants to ban all semi-automatic guns.

I didn’t see a word about my Browning BAR 30.06 being exempt. In fact, my old Remington 7400 is going to be outlawed by this most recent attempt to restrict the kinds of guns of many law abiding citizens who hunt whitetails in Minnesota are able to purchase.

Remington, Winchester and Browning are among the most popular semi-automatic deer hunting rifles in North America. Bushmaster and Colt are gaining in popularity.

Duck, pheasant and grouse hunters should also be concerned if anyone uses a semi-automatic shotgun on the trails, ponds and logging roads of Minnesota. Note that Feinstein mentions rifles, but in her list of 158 firearms that are in her sights to ban are semi-auto shotguns.

“Feinstein’s measure would exempt more than 2,200 types of hunting and sporting rifles; guns “manually operated” by bolt, pump, lever or slide action; and weapons used by government officials, law enforcement and retired law enforcement personnel,” the Washington Times reports. Did you happen to pick up on the phrase “manually operated?”

For those who thought this was about banning “military style assault rifles,” think again.

Ironically, there are those who will be able to own any of the proposed weapons to be banned if Feinstein gets her way. They are government officials. They will be able to buy and use these banned weapons, even after leaving government service.

Oh, I almost forgot. Feinstein and the administration intend to limit ammunition magazines to no more than 10 rounds. (They did this in California where it had no impact on the number of murders committed by the gangs in Los Angeles or Oakland.)

No need to panic. Feinstein has everything under control. It’s those of us who cling to our guns and Bibles that are of concern to the good senator and the administration.

I told you so

is the only thing to say. You "hunters" that don't need or want "assault guns" had better wake up!
The Second Amendment isn't about hunting or shooting skeet like our lying President likes to insinuate.

Another completely false direct copy by Hansen!

There may be some cause for concern here but Keith is passing on pure [filtered word] again--there is NO attempt--ZERO--to ban use of remington 7400's, model 4's, 742's, Browning BAR's, or any typical semi used for hunting.

This is getting REALLY bad BDD--does not anyone care to check Hansen's facts? Does anyone there care that he's simply copying incorrect info from slanted right wing blogs and the like?

Make it easy Diann...

Why not clamp down on the use and purchase of all illegal firearms first. Anyone caught in possession, selling, purchasing or using a illegal firearm to commit any type of crime of violence will automatically be punished to the fullest extent of the law no matter what age, sex, race or gang affiliation.

There it is...pretty easy.

Now, what about the our debt and will a budget finally be presented and voted on?

Yawn. Keith Hansen, once again, spews misinformation.

ProudRINO and Eye, I agree entirely with what you said, but why do we even for a second mistake V.P. Hansen for someone who was hired to be an old-school (reputable, serious) actual journalist/newspaper editor? The main focus of his responsibilities as V.P. of Outrage Development -- I mean, "Audience Development" -- is revenue-based, not content-based. Spreading misinformation to incite anger -- that's just part of the new RWNJ media business model. We know that by now. Of course it's entirely over-the-line, ethically speaking, but I don't really think he reports to anyone who cares. In fact, I'd go so far as to say they encourage it. I no longer even expect factual information from anything written under his by-line. If it slips in once in a while, it's purely incidental. Hansen's a paid bloviator, who probably laughs at the comment section if two opposing sides even attempt to "dialogue" with his misinformation offered as a starting point. What a joke.

If "conservative" readers at BDD want a serious conservative editorial perspective from a MN newspaper (and expect the editorial writers to earn a seat at the adult's table by relying on factual information), try out twincities.com. Keith Hansen, by association the BDD, is just a practitioner of this "trolling" media business model:

“Trolling is a key part of the conservative-entertainment/media business model. These guys say stuff all the time that they do not intend to be persuasive. They’re not trying to explain something, or bring people along to their way of thinking, they’re just doing something to attract attention, and hopefully condemnation and outrage . . . They want to offend you. They seek to offend you. That is the point.”…

“Trolls have a purpose in our politics. They help niche, unpopular positions and people fund themselves and promote themselves as pseudo-political actors by tricking people who ought to know better into punching down at them.

Be a smart person. Don’t feed the trolls."

It's telling, Purposed, that you appreciate Keith's brand of

pseudo-journalism: "Kudos to you Keith for creating the gnashing of teeth .....lol." "Kudos", really? I'm truly curious why you think his deliberate spreading of misinformation is helpful? (or even funny, for that matter?) Or don't you care, as long as it's good for a laugh? I'm not at all interested in discussing misinformation about an "assault-style weapons ban" (that I frankly don't think will pass, anyway, but that's a separate issue). I am curious why some folks approve of the media business model that encourages Keith's brand of journalism. If you start from false information, and don't make an effort at actual problem-solving, what good are you as a commentator? (An acceptable answer is: "his goal is to make money", but then let's not pretend to take him or his views seriously.)

Should we wave the confederate flag & drop some more ammo for the guy down his air vent ???? While we reassure the idiot we wont take your guns away ?

Isn't it amazing that all the "so called" enlightened folks on here seem to try and steam roll Keith. You do it simply because he doesn't subscribe to the same viewpoint that you have.. I submit to you that if he was singing the praises of the Finestein bill you would be agreeing with him. Personally I don't subscribe to the same elitist drivel any more than I do the crap that comes from Fox. Read the bill and it explains itself..

Not the point, Purposed

You and your employer, of course, have more technical knowledge about guns. That and $2.00 will buy you a coffee with the 68% of Americans who live in households without even one gun, and who could care less about your technical knowledge. They just want less gun violence. They want to see our legislators at all levels engage in actual problem-solving around the issue of gun violence. They long for editors who aren't apologists for a far extreme, but who would rather problem-solve.

As far as Keith's "gun knowledge", whoop-de-cheeet; that still doesn't give him carte-blanche to make stuff up as he goes, whether it's about Sen. Feinstein's bill or the many other issues that are subjects of "his" (or Fox's ...) rants. If he supposedly has superior knowledge on a subject matter, great! In those situations, by all means, bring that knowledge to the table in a responsible manner so we can all discuss it. He didn't do that here.

You have made it known that you have an especially large dog in this fight, as guns also comprise your livelihood, so to speak. Fair enough. That may or may not make you particularly open-minded in any of these discussions, but it does elevate your technical knowledge to "better than the average reader." In your opinion, is there ANY room for any improvement in our laws to attempt to decrease gun violence? And I'm talking about actual "guns" right now, not the other myriad issues that are necessarily a part of the overall dialogue.

I guess I agree with former Republican Cong. Joe Scarborough when he says the leadership of current NRA (once a "representative of responsible gun owners") has lost their focus and credibility. They've now relegated themselves to just speaking for an extreme fringe (w/ a bunker mindset who think their weapons will protect them from a future so-called "tyrannical gov't"). The NRA with this current mindset ("people are coming for your guns!!) is stoking fear while gun manufacturers are laughing all the way to the bank. I agree with him that this contributes nothing to a rational conversation about gun violence.

"Au, contraire", say the "enlightened".

Seriously, though, it's a helpful requirement of democracy to engage with folks who have an honestly-held and communicated difference of opinion. And, it's kind of fun to engage in both light repartee and honest dialogue with someone who takes the issues seriously, but comes at them from a different point of view. My father and I did that all of the time when he was alive, and we had fabulous conversations. My issue with V.P. of Audience Development, Keith Hansen is that he uses his editorial platform as a bully pulpit -- to be a bully -- (and, in this case, to misinform) rather than as an opportunity to promote open, honest problem-solving and dialogue. The Pi. Press editorial page, for example, is capable of presenting a viable conservative POV without misinforming and "trolling" (for lack of a more comprehensive term).

Troll alert

It's all quite simple really... All we have to do is put all our resources into the mental illness part, to stop the idea that no matter how bad things get, no matter how you've been wronged, guns and bullets are not the solution to your problem, bigger guns and bullets, more guns and bullets.....
This seems to be where Adam Lanza, Jared Loughner and Wayne LaPierre all agree and is actually the real problem.
When we have to put the AR and a stuffed ammo box and a couple of drums in the trunk and holster the glock to take the grandkids for a movie and pizza, we've gone off the deep end..

Captron, Alabama killer still holding child hostage

"The neighbors said he yelled and fired shots over damage he claimed their pickup truck did to a make-shift speed bump in the dirt road."

And yet he still had possession of a fire arm. With any Right comes Responsibility. His guns should have been confiscated pending the scheduled hearing.

Yes, shoot first or threaten your neighbors with a gun...I know someone who did that and remains proudly in possession of his arsenal. He was a short guy with low self esteem and poor anger management control trying to compensate for his lack of power.

Wonder what this guy's mental problem is. Let's hope the child survives.

One thing that bothers me is, she cannot even get the illegal guns out of the hands of thugs on the street. Everyone knows how bad the gang problem is in Cal. The prisons are virtually run by gangs. She wants to limit the ownership on guns by law abiding citizens in the whole country. I say, take care of your own backyard first. My impression of her is the same as Pelosi. Just wants the notoriety of passing a huge bill. Egos need to be left at home when they go to office.

Not only CA but, Chicago where there seems to be no respect for human life . Last weekend was another big weekend for shootings. a lovely gal that had been in D.C. earlier for the party was shot and killed. All she was doing was hanging out talking with friends -- about 14 years old.

In DC. I think she was in a marching band for the parade.
Worthless. The shooters are evil in this case.

Hospitals and schools might be next to institute such safety measures.

Let me get this straight. It's okay for clowns like Bubba, Eyolf, Captron etc, to continually blast Keith as if it were something personal but when I blast Little Johnny on his low life, slimey, lying, cheating, stealing ways of politics, I'm picking on him. I have a personal grudge against him. Okay clowns, I see how it works. You guys would work real well in a dictatorship. Your listen to me attitude and no one else is right is a great reflection on your mentality.

foolish

Foolish to believe they will stop at the current proposed 157 firearms on the ban list. Once they have done this, and figure out it didn't work, which guns will they then tell us are evil and begin to limit and take ? Look past all of the media hype, and check the facts on how many crimes are commited with the improperly labeled "assault" weapons. You will find more are committed with handguns and non firearm weapons. Just because it resembles a military weapon, does not make it one. Focus on the person in control of the tool, not the tool itself. Enacting more laws that limit the law abiding citizen only serves to make the law abiding pay for the criminals actions. We have become a society Ruled by the actions of criminals, not the law abiding. Complacency is one of the many masks of ignorance, through which they will indeed continue on the course of total disarmament. Give an inch and they will take a mile. And yes, i do have a fair level of firearms knowledge, military, and civilian, MOS 2111 infantry weapons repair/armorer USMC Is it an extreme thought that our government seeks total disarmament ? perhaps it is, but can you, with an open mind, discount it ?

Nutty Alabama guy:

"A neighbor stated that Dykes had built a bunker behind his residence; another neighbor, Michael Creel, confirmed this:

“He’s the type that thinks the government’s out to get him,” said Creel, who also said Dykes is a Vietnam veteran. “He’s not right in the head.”

So a Vietnam Veteran builds a bunker and kidnaps a six year old and takes him to his bunker.

And his guns are probably legally purchased and registered.

Charlie

Charlie, when you were called on the carpet last week about your intense dislike for "Little Johnny" and his supposed "anti-Veteran" leanings, you came up with what many commenters thought was zero evidence for your vitriol. i.e.: "He (Rep. Ward) wanted to renovate old moldy school buildings for veteran use", and "he was a member of an American Legion, even though he was only the son of a veteran") It didn't add up as overwhelming "anti-veteran" sentiment for most of us, so we were/are confused. So be it.

In the case of Keith Hansen's work product, he has provided on these very pages, several times/month, the ample fodder/evidence for his detractors. He pursues his chosen style with intention, and probably as a part of a larger Morris media business model. As readers, we have every right to take issue with this. (And those who like this style have every right to cheer it on. Rah-rah -- go Keith!) While he may be a great guy with whom to kick back and have a beer, I comfortably stand by my position that he delivers sub-standard conservative problem-solving (if he attempts to problem-solve at all). He goes for the inflammatory, attention-getting rants over the contemplative, problem-solving critique. I think BDD readers deserve better, and could find better conservative thinking -- and presentation of the same -- elsewhere.

BTW, Happy Birthday, Charlie! Remember, "age is an issue of mind over matter, if you don't mind, it doesn't matter!" (Mark Twain)

Thanks, Purposed. A thought-filled comment, but I heartily

disagree that it's unimportant to continue to ask for better from Mr. Hansen's stylebook. If he's forced by Morris Media to pursue an editorial strategy focused away from problem-solving, (like most editors do) and toward vitriol and rhetorical flourish, I guess it's all in a day's work for him.

When you say, above, that you "don't get it", believe me, I realize that you don't. What I don't understand is why you don't. (or why it's unimportant). And hence the great divide. Peace back atcha, though!

By the way, Charlie, "old Dove" was out there recently protesting the Obama drone policy, along with former FBI agent and whistle-blower, Colleen Rawley. I'm not particularly fond of Obama's drone (non-)policy, either. Lots of innocents killed through that non-policy. This article, plus the follow-up comments, is very interesting. So I wonder what will happen when Obama gives amnesty

to the illegals, if they will be able to keep their guns they brought over the border, or will they have to automatically have to register them? Considering they are already breaking the law, what's to say that they will become instant law abiding citizens? Or is it just real Americans that have to pay for the burden of others? Reminds me how they cracked down on pseudoephedrine, the main ingredient for sinus pills, also used for making meth. Who in the end suffered? Those that really needed the pills for legal purposes while those that made meth just merrily continued on!

Rambling On

Bubba, when I make statements you always require documentation. Okay, where in the filtered word do you get your information that Morris Media forces Mr. Hansens stylebook. Let's see the proof, mr big mouth. It appears that the only vitriol and rhetoric that flourishes on this website comes from the mouth of people like you. When someone states they "don't get it" only means that you have just blabbed some more garbage that an intelligent person can't comprehend. If you have such a hatred toward Morris Communications, why do you continue to use/read their material. Are you a self proclaimed sadist. By the way, old Dove and Colleen Rowley were not out at Ripley recently protesting the Drones. Again, you flap your jaws without proof or engagement of the brain first. They have not been out at Ripley since last fall and that doesn't sound like recently to me. Also, comparing the drones being used in warfare to the drones being used at Ripley shows another one of your mental errors. Because your narrow brain sees a picture of a "Drone" blowing something up, on television in a combat zone, your pea brain thinks all drones are the same. Wrong. I suggest you back up and learn about the subject before you spill your big mouth on here with false material. You ask, Do I favor Obamas drone policy? I don't favor any policy of Obamas however if you want me to make a comment that you can stir the pot about, I favor killing our enemy in any way shape or form. If you are so stupid as to believe we are killing innocent women and children, I take you back to Nam where women and children killed many of our great soldiers. Five year old children carried weapons in Nam. There is no such thing as innocent women and children in a combat area. What are these women and children doing in the presence of an opposing combatant anyway. Yes, I am in favor of drones blowing the hell out of anyone that gets in their way. You need a good taste of reality before you take shots at anyone else on this website again. Amen, brother.PS: For you to disagree with Purposed is normal. No one expects you to agree with someone with intelligence.
