Who will tell the people the truth?

Posted: January 24, 2013 - 5:23pm

Ah, my … how time flies when you’re having fun. It seems like yesterday that we were crying tears of hope and change. The hope is gone, but there are still plenty of tears over the change.

How well I remember Thomas Friedman’s article in The New York Times during the 2008 presidential campaign titled “Who will tell the people?”

Said Friedman, “We don’t need a president who is tough enough to withstand the lies of his opponents. We need a president who is tough enough to tell the truth to the American people.”

Based on his words, I assume Friedman ended up not voting.

Of course, by now everyone this side of Hugo Chavez realizes that the Kenyan guy who won is tough enough to tell the truth. It’s just that he chose not to, because he knew that the truth would have been a losing hand. Once in office, he was still tough enough to tell the truth, but, again, he chose not to because he knew it would impede his efforts to carry out his agenda.

Then came the 2012 presidential race. I imagine most people naively believed that Obama couldn’t outdo his 2008 festival of fabrications, but he sure fooled them. This time around, he lied with a Madoffian style and grace that made people forget that his first term in office showcased the most failed presidency in U.S. history.

But on the Republican side, it was a different story. The GOP thought they’d try something new, so they nominated a paper machete mannequin to run for president. Unfortunately, as one would expect from a mannequin, he couldn’t spell. He thought tough was spelled s-o-f-t. It was obvious from the outset that Mannequin Mitt was not going to stick his neck out and offer up even small morsels of truth.

Establishment Republicans kept insisting that Romney was a man of character (Ann Coulter even gushed that he was a “Mormon square”), but, in the end, he couldn’t quite muster up the character to tell voters the truth. Too bad, because if he had, he probably would have won handily.

Before the 2008 election, I wrote that no matter who you voted for, the moral and economic decline of the U.S. would continue, though faster with Barack Obama at the controls rather than John McMush. I also said that the next president would preside over more and bigger disasters than any president in U.S. history. I was right on both counts.

But I also wrote that since there was no realistic way to solve any of the nation’s major economic problems, whoever won the election would receive most of the blame. In this case, I was, for the most part, wrong. True, after a year or two, several million people were jarred out of their decades-long slumber and realized they had been scammed by Commie Obammie. But most people who voted for BHO happily went back for seconds — unemployment benefits, disability payments, food stamps, etc.

In fairness, BHO sent the American public many clear messages about his intentions, but it’s hard to process information when your mind is focused on rushing out to pick up a fresh supply of food stamps. In any event, it doesn’t matter what the Duplicitous Despot says if most people pretend as though they didn’t hear it.

But forget about Obama. We already know what to expect from a Saul Alinsky disciple. The question is, which Republican will finally step forward and tell the people the truth? Unfortunately, in today’s morally decadent America, politicians realize that the constituency for cutting entitlements is a small minority, so they have only two choices: lie or lose. Just ask Ron Paul, who was brushed aside by the media (including Fox News!) and the Republican Party for consistently refusing to deceive voters.

Conclusion: Best to forget about politicians and focus on doing what you, as an individual, can do to combat tyranny. And the first step toward that end is to acknowledge the reality that BHO is not just another far-left guy like FDR, LBJ, or Jimmy Carter. None of them had a Marxist agenda.

True, FDR pushed for dictatorial rule, but when Congress and the Supreme Court let him know they were drawing a constitutional line, he backed off. Do you really believe Barack Obama will ever back off? Wake up, America! It’s not in his playbook.

The clock is ticking on the American Empire as the “dreams from my father” continue to become ever more entrenched. Gun confiscation, Obamacare, and runaway inflation, to name but a few of BHO’s atrocities — are moving ahead full steam.

Oh … and so, too, is the possibility of a third, fourth, and fifth term — and beyond! — for the media-invented president whose arrogance now has him focused on making 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue his permanent address.

Laugh at your own peril. After all, in a “free” country you have a right to go on believing whatever you want to believe. But, at the same time, you should recognize that reality is not discriminatory. Nature does not accept ignorance as an excuse for harboring false beliefs. It metes out negative consequences just as harshly to a person who is well-meaning but misinformed (or naïve) as to one who is malevolent and stubborn.

Regardless, the one thing none of us can complain about is boredom. Thanks to Bolshevik Barry, we do live in exciting times.

Irony is getting your

new Brainerd Dispatch invoice, your local paper, and then reading this drivel by the self-proclaimed "voice of sanity".

I don't really choose to subscribe to a southern paper with insulting columns written by old men pandering to other old men. I guess my invoice may just go in the fireplace with the other refuse.

In case you aren't familiar with him:
"Robert Ringer made his name in the 1970s as the author of Me Decade motivational classics like "Winning Through Intimidation" and "Looking Out for Number One." Ringer has brought that kind of selfish intimidation approach to his WorldNetDaily column, begun in October 2006." Another devoted follower of Ayn Rand.

Boy, he sounds like a guy you would want to know...not!

Robert, you need a copy editor.
"they nominated a paper machete mannequin to run for president." (Referring to Romney)
I believe up north we spell it papier mâché.

Sunfish

Why is there a limit on sunfish, ofb? Aren't there enough to go around?

And if the Dispatch chooses to use this guy, they should identify him. There is no information online about him except his list of books. Where is he from, whom does he work for, is he educated? He is 74...that is the extent of his personal information.

Read ofb's post

He switched to fish. And I sympathized with the fisherman. Can't you multi-task?

But yes, this article is kind of stinky, like rotten fish.

globe trotting nut case to Swift boat phantom

In a May 3, 2012, email, the State Department denied a request by a group of Special Forces assigned to protect the U.S. embassy in Libya to continue their use of a DC- 3 airplane for security operations throughout the country. . .
Four days later, on May 7, the State Department authorized the U.S. embassy in Vienna [Austria] to purchase a $108,000 electric vehicle charging station for the embassy motor pool’s new Chevrolet Volts. The purchase was a part of the State Department’s “Energy Efficiency Sweep of Europe” initiative, which included hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars on green program expenditures at various U.S. Embassies.
In fact, at a May 10 gala held at the U.S. embassy in Vienna, the ambassador showcased his new Volts and other green investments as part of the U.S. government’s commitment to “climate change solutions.” . . .
Before the terrorist attack that took the lives of Ambassador Chris Stevens, Sean Smith, Glen Doherty and Tyrone Woods, there were more than 230 security incidents in Libya between June 2011 and July 2012.
Of those attacks, 48 took place in Benghazi, two at the U.S. diplomatic compound and scene of the September 11, 2012, terrorist attacks.

I don't know why there

I don't know why there appears to be a fascination with who this writer is. You have more information on him than one would ever get on AP. Usually, it just says AP and it is hard to find out who wrote it. I'm not saying always but, I remember getting irritated that there was no name and no email (not that they ever read them).

I spent years reading papers, magazines, editorials where most of the writers were left of center. I either didn't read the article or read it and thought "so what"?
I as well as others are so used to reading the opposite of what we think that now when there is an article where we can say
"yes" it is a welcome thing. So when people get upset that there actually is a conservative opinion in the paper, it is rather (fill in the blank).

Southie -- Agreed.

Ringer is just a crank, rhetorical flame-thrower. It is not his intention to advance civil discussion on any issue. His intention has always been to merely advance the financial interests of Robert Ringer. Like a toddler who acts out just to get attention, Ringer can only cash a paycheck if he has similarly cried out to be noticed. Couldn't he just be a good 'ole pal now and go cash out his accounts and retire to a tax-free haven somewhere? I encourage others who have read enough of Ringer's rants to just ignore him. A small, probably insignificant protest: regardless of how incendiary and wrong-headed he may be in the future diatribes this paper chooses to pass off as journalism, I won't participate in upping the ante by adding to this comment thread. This is the last time, as he is simply not worth the seconds of one's life it takes to read to the end of any of his screeds. A simple "ignore" will suffice as comment hereforward.

P.S.: Sadie - The are so many great conservative writers,

who seriously take on the issues of the day. And the Dispatch has an endless supply to choose from, if they'd like to tap into them. They print this trash, instead. (and many readers have complained about Ringer -- not that it matters, as it's still good "red meat" for their far-right readers). It may be that they are required, as a Morris paper, to print Ringer? I'm not sure. I am sure, however, that Ringer does not qualify as one who cares about civil discourse. It's not what he does, as it's not what makes a "name" for himself. He's the print version of Rush Limbaugh, and no self-respecting person who disagrees with the political perspective of these individuals even enters into the fray. It's pointless, because discourse and problem-solving are not their objectives.

"Who will tell the people the truth?"

Obama stated that he'd have the most transparent administration in history. One of the first things he did was seal all his personal records. When Fast & Furious came to light (hundreds dead) he enacted an executive order to hide the truth. We still have no idea what really happened in Benghazi. First they blamed a video. Then chastised anyone that pointed out they said it was a video (after apologizing to the world for the video/basically stating that we deserved the attack). Now Hillary says, "what does it matter?" Based on the reactions of the MSM and half the country, I'm starting to wonder if anything Obama does matters anymore. The tentacles of Marxism have taken hold. It'll take many more Americans to open their eyes to save our great Republic. BTW-The Emperor is most definitely not wearing clothes!

Southie-you ask

Why does there have to be a limit on sunfish anyway. Here's your answer. Limits on sunfish were established after the large influx of asians into Minnesota. The DNR, unknown to many, are already trapping sunfish by the millions from OUR AREA LAKES and transplanting them into metro area lakes (Phalen, etc) to accomodate the metro area asians. Now this post will probably be pulled as being racist but let the truth be heard. Read what you want into this story.

Makes me cringe, Sadie, to read you mention Rush (entertainer

exceptionale) in the same breath as some folks in your tidy string-of-names who attempt to engage in problem-solving dialogue. Even Rush would call himself an entertainer, above all else (and I think he has, when challenged about some of his vitriol-for-vitriol's-sake methodology). Folks like Ringer and Rush are trying to make a living as entertainers (and they do pretty well). They're entitled to a living -- and I'm entitled to seek my entertainment elsewhere.

If the Dispatch has sunk to the level of Ringer for their "conservative voice", I'm sorry to hear that. Not a huge problem for me, as I don't pay for any of this content. If I did pay for it, I'd probably make an appointment to speak with V.P. of Audience Development, Hansen, and ask him more about his strategy for "developing" his "audience". It's not worth my money or time -- too many competing good products online these days. I feel sorry for the Brainerd residents who really need this paper for local information or advertising. I guess some of them just hold their noses as they tip-toe past the op/ed section. In a couple of months when the Dispatch asks us to pony-up in order to read their online stuff, I'll be spending my dollars on a better paper. Gotta love all the choices in our Marxist economy!

(P.S.: I laugh every time I read the comments about impending socialism and Marxism! Take a gander down K-Street, and, with a straight face, tell me there is any risk of our capitalist-cum-plutocratic America becoming Marxist. "The tentacles of Marxism" are bitten off, chewed up and spit out by K-Street's clients like an inconvenient eggshell in the omelettte. An insignificant annoyance. Don't stay up nights worrying too much about that "Marxism" thing -- not worth losing 5 min. sleep over.

I agree with K street but,

I agree with K street but, also with all the federal buildings all over D.C. Just walk around and think, do we really need
all these buildings and workers in D.C.?
I think not.

Nothing wrong with being an entertainer and at the same time employing many people.

Yes, there are competing products online to read which I do.
We subscribe to this paper, Mpls Tribune, Wall street Journal, and Bloomberg Business Week. I still like hard copies of papers .

Myeye: In the age of media as "entertainment", replete with

every writer's or shock-jock's extreme version of "truth" and "facts" (everybody gets their own, no one agrees on common "facts), we're really just dealing with a product. There was a day when the expression: "you're entitled to your own opinion, but not your own set of facts" was agreed upon as true. No more. As a consumer of media now, one decides what they will and won't pay for, based on total subjective criteria. I guess that is a kind of censorship. Regarding varied points of view, I wouldn't read a newspaper that didn't present many. Among those many views, I'd hope to read work from quality journalists (be they conservative, progressive, ...), and (for me) Rinker is just a rank political hack, ill-equipped to verse anyone in such lofty things as "truth" or "justice". He'd give a good book report on Ayn Rand's thought, and regale us with some utopian laissez-faire, capitalist society b.s.(that Paul Ryan used to subscribe to before the Catholic Church slapped his knuckles with a ruler). If Ringer's product is your cup of tea, I'm happy you'll enjoy your purchase. I'll pass. (I didn't follow your last sentence's meaning, so the fun was lost on me.)

No my cup of tea...

Both sides have their share of over the top fog horns in my book. I have a huge distaste for "smart" liberal entertainers that bang the drum to "wealth is bad" and yet need help pushing their cart loaded with bags of gold to the bank. The same for leeches such as Al Sharpton, Jessie Jackson that have made a fine living off the backs of "their people" claiming they "feel their pain" preaching inequality due to birthright and smiling at the hatered they spawned in their message.

My biggest ax to grind is how elected officials will sit on party lines for the sake of the party and preach that one should pay for the other because parity should be the new norm. Don't even try to convince me that there isn't sufficient funding to support our basic needs when billions in private funds can be raised by both sides for a position in public office that the salary wouldn't even come close to the cost to be elected.

I guess what I'm trying to point out, it doesn't matter what side of the fence you lean on, both sides have skid marks in their shorts and as long as each side keeps fueling the fire for their "cause" common ground becomes less and insanity will prevail over sanity. The vehicle(s) used (media, all shapes and forms) for this train wreck about to happen can be as much to blame as those who are supplying the fuel (money=ratings=bags of gold).

In the end...who really is the fool?

Southie the way to stop this

Is to

1) Drop your subscription, calling them and telling them why.

2) Be aware that they are also using web hits as an advertising selling point.

3) Take note of those who advertise on pages with this wacko far extreme drivel that has zero ties to local issues most of the time--and call the advertisers up and tell them of your concerns. If they choose to advertise with such a news outfit, they are agreeing to the extreme slant, and you don't have to patronize their business.
