We keep hearing that we are the strongest and best nation in the world. The country that every other one should look up to and model themselves after. Yet, because of the self-serving majority of our Congress that allows themselves to be bought by the National Rifle Association (NRA) with their lobbying and political contributions, we now have to have armed guards not only at our banks, but at our malls, churches, movie theaters, universities and even our elementary schools.
Apparently, they think it is the right of any gun-loving lunatic to own a repeating weapon that can kill dozens of people in a matter of minutes as long as those contributions keep coming in. And the second amendment doesn’t say anything about the right to own a Uzi. They were referring to muskets. It seems we didn’t think the congressional herd enough in the last election.
How many more people have to be murdered before we get some people with a conscience elected?
And I am sick of hearing that guns don’t kill people, people kill people. But guns are a coward’s weapon. You don’t even have to get close to your victims. You can’t kill dozens of people with a brick, frying pan or even a knife without getting close to your victims and probably being overcome by someone.

are the many children killed each year by their own parents.
I just saw that 200 children a year are killed by their mothers.
I don't know the site that listed that number, but the number
is around that. I'm always suspious when the number is an
even number. Any number is too much. I don't know what methods they used, but the one mother used a knife and
we know drowning has been used.
Should something be done about parents/nannies killing their children? Of course, but what? Getting rid of guns is not
going to help this.
BTW south
I must have missed that one. Where & when was that?? I remember hearing about the 4 yr old who shot his 2 yr old brother but not the one you are saying.
Two things for you twilight:
The majority of our armed forces are National guards and Reserves. Do you think they will shoot at their families and neighbors? And if they do............... do you understand that they are outnumbered 80+ million to 400,000? They can't stop the Muslims from murdering innocent women and children in Afghanistan and Israel so how will they lead you liberals to Paradise here?
government
they did a survey back in the early "80's" asking reserve members if they would go into homes and take people's guns away. This was planned for a long time. WAKE UP
Southie and OFB
I just did a quick check and also couldn't find anything on the
four year old that Southie mentioned. Just the 4 year old that shot the 2 year old and he had found his Dad's gun.
Not saying a 4 year old didn't get shot, just didn't see it.
pickle,
why do you suppose that more Nat. Guard and Reserve units are in the Middle East than Regular Army? Why were UN troops being trained in the US for urban warfare in the US? Hmmmm, citizen soldiers overseas, Reg. Army here with UN backup, tyrantical government wants the population disarmed and a UN anti-gun treaty going before the Senate in March.
I do believe this has been an ongoing plan for a long time.
Southie, I'm thinking that maybe this is one of those
"conversations" that's just not worth the effort. What say you? There's a lot being written and discussed out there on this issue, and folks will engage their "limits"/comfort zone for opposing ideas as they see fit. Fair enough. (And for the Black Helicopter folks, I got nothing. Have fun with that.)
A merry and blessed Christmas to you all! My spouse is a pastor, so we're especially busy during this wonderful season. Regardless of our extremely varied political views on this site, I'm sure many of us are saying an extra prayer for the families who've lost loved ones in Newtown.
Sorry, Sadie
I misspoke. He was seven years old and from Pennsylvania. There are just so many examples, I got them confused. Here is the story.
I edited the post.

Southie
I just read the link. It happened in PA and is so sad,
The kid got in the back of the truck and put his seatbelt
on and the dad got in the front. Bang. he had been trying to
sell the gun at a gun show and didn't clear the gun.
There will be charges and the father is distraught.
This last school shooting is
This last school shooting is one of the worst indeed, but there have been so many others also, what most of them have in common is the shooter was either on anti-depressants,and stopped taking them, or the dosage was increased,or they had some other type of emotional disturbance that was not being helped. Guns are not to blame here, there are more gun owners who use them responsibly, than those who should have never had one in the first place. For more proof of this go to SSRI stories.com Find out for yourself!!!!

I wonder why all these accidents don't involve women and mothers and daughters?
When ever
any one around me calls them assault rifles I always correct them and say that "the only reason they're called assault weapons is because they have banana clip style magazines. So for the sake of accuracy please call it a banana rifle." There isn't a gun dispute you can't win when the gun grabber keeps calling semi-autos banana rifles.
=)
I heard
that in Fort Ripley, they are training soldiers to invade Brainerd and take away all guns. They have drones surveying everyone right now. These drones have the new x-ray technology to see inside your house. They will come on Christmas eve when no one suspects anything. At least that is what the unbalanced one told me. We are doomed!

Actually, at least eight children were hospitalized in China...
...and we can't presume that we know what's really happening there, because the Chinese government is not known for its openness. Nevertheless, that attack was far from the first non-gun related attack in china, some of which have been far worse. In fact, there's even a Wikipedia entry devoted to these sorts of attacks:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/School_attacks_in_China_%282010%E2%80%93201...
Notice that the Chinese understand that these attacks are largely the result of mental illness. You know what is a big contributing factor in mental illness? The destruction of the social fabric, starting with the family, and working its way out into the culture. Owning a gun doesn't cause this sort of thing, a broken mind does.

How about a national conversation
regarding the issues? Is that too much to expect?
I hope my friends who own a gun store in South Dakota are getting rich because they have been complaining for four years that the President is going to take their guns away. Seems to be a good marketing strategy, doesn't it?
The basic premise of Julie's writing
is valid. However, she pulled the NRA's chain too hard when she alluded to the survivalist element among us as being 'Cowards'.
Those who worship their guns to the extent that they cannot be without any of them are a part of society that continually boarders on mental problems. Yes, some are cowards, but most of them are just 'hung up' on their guns and love and treat them as an appendage. The coward element comes into play in situations like Ct. and the many previous ones in the past decade.
Assault weapons and their mulit-load magazines have no place in the U.S.A. Any person who is capable of clear thinking will agree with that statement. Those who do not have that capability will continue to want more and more weapons unleashed to the general public without controls....and that is where the mental problem part comes into play.

preference
My preferred collection of rifles and shotguns are bolt action, lever action and pump shotguns. I feel I burn through too many rounds at ducks with a semi shotgun. I like peanutmans comment anout being hung up on guns, he is absolutley right, My father (who passed away a few years ago) gave me a majority of my guns. I have added to my small collection over the years but all have a purpose or sentimental value. I have friends that make fun of me because I name them after their purpose (Gert the goose getter, Debbie the duck downer, Delores the deer slayer) What I'm trying to get at is that 95% of gun owners have valid LEGAL reasons to own guns. There may be an AR15 platform in my future due to the fact that the coyotes are decimating my grouse population on the farm and I've heard they do the job very effectively.
Unreal
I cannot believe that the Dispatch actually allowed this biased and opinionated article to print. I legally own and carry a handgun. I also follow all the carry laws, which I feel is direct violation of my 2nd amendment right. I have become increasingly uncomfortable walking into "gun free" zones where even the security guards are only armed with tazers. To call people owning and carrying guns "cowards" is unthinkable. I guarantee you will stand behind me if someone starts a killing rampage because I will be the guy running towards him, not away. Am I still the "coward" then? Or would that be you, who is cowering behind the guy with the sidearm trying to defend you for no good reason?
Uzi
I see a lot of comments about the Uzi incident cited for a reason against guns.
Why was the firearm loaded on display? Part of being a responsible gun owner is preventing incidents like that from occurring. A responsible salesperson always performs safety checks when putting a firearm on display and again before allowing a customer to view the firearm.
The parents of the child obviously never educated the child on proper firearm safety/respect. None of my sisters or cousins would ever have done that as they have all been taught proper firearm safety and respect firearms.
That was an incident of negligence on both sides.
