No more whining, please

Posted: November 29, 2012 - 10:14pm

The “perfect quote” in the Nov. 19 paper from the Czech Republic was a reach. As the writer is attracted to foreign quotes, here’s one.

From Andrian Kreye in the Suddeutsche Zeitung (Germany): “Obama’s victory in the U.S. was decisive, but it would have been an absolute rout if Germany could vote. More than 90 percent of Germans favored his re-election. Part of the reason is our general love of America, rooted in nostalgia for the 20th century superpower that defeated the Nazis and the Soviets and gave us jeans and rock ‘n roll. But more specifically, Obama seems to have brought to U.S. politics a European spirit of solidarity and compassion.”

As long as Republicans continue to let resentment-filled talk radio blowhards like Limbaugh and religious zealots define the party as anti-science, anti-feminist, anti-gay and anti-Hispanic, they are doomed to become a party of the past.

In right-wing blogs, radio talk shows and Fox News, conservatives convinced themselves that Obama was a Muslim Kenyan Socialist who hoped to destroy America. Propaganda that the rest of America dismissed as nonsense.

The election is over and a solid majority has spoken. Let’s get down to business and try to make this country the best we can.

If all we are going to get from the opinion page in this paper is negative posturing, fuming, and whining from the right, and little weekly notes of “more changes we can do without,” it’s going to be a long four years...or more.

Gary Krueger

Purposed, Gary is responding to a fallacious

Letter in the paper. Is that wrong?
Perhaps you should post on sites that don't allow constructive free speech...

Remember, more people voted for Democrats for House seats than they did Republicans.

Compromise is needed.

Your rhetoric is a little over the top, but I respect your right to say whatever you wish.

I think Democrats and the public in general did not hear

many voices denying those accusations, though. Did you? They got more and more outrageous with no one on the right denying their veracity.

The current president has had more name calling and threats aimed at him than probably any politician in history. And that is what led to divisiveness.

Trump had power...Rush had power...And Fox News had power...and they used it.

When McCain stood up to the lady in Minneapolis who called Obama names, that was a powerful moment. Republicans could have had many similar moments. It might have changed the course of history.

Mass media need to stick to facts

Rush with his huge audience, needs to protect his turf to succeed. His calling a law student a "s l u t" is disrespectful. To whom is he appealing?

By talking over guests, Chris Mathews keeps me from listening. His audience is small.

None of the cable news leaders are journalists. They are entertainers.

Mr Kreuger?

Could you create an online ID on the Dispatch forums so I can put you on ignore? It would have saved me a lot of time reading your hateful letter.

Sore winners

I think this writer and Southie do not themselves listen to Rush or Fox News or whatever blogs they talk about or they
would know better. This President has not taken much of any
critiicism from CBS, NBC, ABC, PBS, NPR, CNN MSNBC
only Fox, Rush and several radio talk programs have dared to point out the weak leadership of this President.
Many people continually called Pres. Bush Hitler and worse,
you see, if you call this President lazy you are a racist.
I have not heard Rush call him a Muslim or any other show
that I listen to . Solid majority ?? what does that mean?

Does Obama want to destroy this country? Why does the administration want to take over your 401K and Ira?
You can call us names, but we are paying attention to the direction that this country is headed. It is too mind-boggling to have to explain all the ways Obama has over-stepped the presidency. He now wants to have power himself to up the debt limit instead of going through Congress.
Some of us take our lumps and move on. Actually, the election changed nothing, we still talk about the problems.
Did you think we would stop being concerned about our country just because of the election?

They do stick to the facts...and they'll tell you that. Problem is, they pick and choose, rearrange, emphasize, de-emphasize, etc., etc. I'll guarantee you that Mike O'Rourke will swear up and down that everything he says is factual. So will Keith Hansen. C-Span is political, Wikipedia is political, even the so-called fact checkers are biased in one way or another. It's a human thing. Now if we could just do away with humans....

Issues drive elections.

The successful candidates recognize which issues get people out to vote. We saw it in Minnesota and nationally.

"Conservatives are very much in arms over the news that Sandra Fluke, she of the uber-expensive birth control problem, is under consideration to be Time's Person of the Year.

Actually, the magazine—even in considering her—has a point, since the award is supposed to go to the person or person who had the biggest influence on the events of the day over the previous year. As the anchor for the liberals' "war on women" attack against Mitt Romney and the GOP, she can arguably be called the public face of the issue that helped turn the election.

In hindsight, the Republicans didn't realize what was up, at least not until it was too late. The claims made by Ms. Fluke and others regarding the issue of birth control were, to most Americans, so outrageous as to be, if not unbelievable at least wide-open to parody and ridicule—except for a subgroup of women, especially those of college age or in graduate school. They struck right at the heart of what their professors and campus organizations had been telling them about the Republicans: that they hate women, regard them as second-class citizens and baby factories, and do not take them seriously. The media echo chamber's repetition of the comments made by some Republicans and some commentators about Ms. Fluke only helped reinforce that view—which hurt because this election, for Obama, was not about turning out as many Americans to vote as possible. It was about turning out, in higher numbers than the GOP expected, the right kinds of Americans, meaning those who would vote for Obama."

What is Fluke doing now?

Sandra Kay Fluke (born April 17, 1981) is an American lawyer and women's rights activist. She is a graduate of Cornell University (2003), and cum laude graduate of the Georgetown University Law Center (2012). She is studying for the California Bar Exam.

Who reads Time?

Can you be called a lawyer if you haven't yet passed the
bar exam? No biggie. Just asking.
So, we rejoice because the outcome of the election is more important than the lack of honesty. The gamesmanship
and winning the election is the most important.

The set-up for the "war on women" was when George Stephie
asked Romney about states and birth control. No matter
what he said for an answer, the media would fill in the blanks.

And people wonder why we are concerned for the future of our country.

I assume Gary is speaking for the majority of Americans.. It's a sad day.. I being proactive expecting bankruptcy of America soon. That's why I'm living off grid on my organic farm. You got Gary style Brainwashed Socialist and Romeny/Limbaugh style Neo-cons.. I've left behind American Politics and am implementing self-government..
Libertarian Conservationism is probably the way too go in the future.
Screw politics--Govern yourself because DC is a a lost cause--no hope in the Feds..
Life is much better now, voting 3rd, living off the land, hunting, trapping, farming, just a couple bills.. Work enough to pay the bills, enjoy the free time, take coffee breaks==better quality of life

Sorry, Southie...

...but you don't speak for all women. It's true, there are plenty of younger, unmarried women who are looking to set back the progress made by the women's movement by turning to the government as an ersatz husband designed to take care of their needs. But any self-respecting and truly independent woman should be deeply offended by Fluke's actions because they make women look like total losers.

Oh, and BTW, it's hard not to laugh at the letter writer...

...at the top of this thread. Why exactly should we care how Germans would have voted in this election? I'm sure 9 out of 10 communists prefer Obama, as well, that certainly doesn't give me a warm and fuzzy feeling about him.

Don't we want single women

On birth control?? Isn't it helping the "entitlement program"? If all single and a lot of married women weren't on birth control, wouldn't we have a huge spike in the population of children that would need government help????

Or just a radio show that goes bankrupt and then moves on to con his way into the Senate!
