Democrats control the agenda from Washington to St. Paul

Posted: November 8, 2012 - 4:45pm

After Tuesday’s national election it is clear that Democrats control the White House, the U.S. Senate and both houses of the Minnesota Legislature.

That reversal in Minnesota gives Gov. Mark Dayton and the Democrats control of state government, something governor did not have prior to Tuesday’s outcome.

President Barack Obama won a race for a second stint as occupant of the White House over moderate Republican Mitt Romney, by sweeping key swing states.

It’s been a while since we were able to retire for the evening knowing that one of the candidates had been declared the victor. It was shortly after 10:20 p.m. CST that the word from CBS anchor Scott Pelley declared incumbent Democrat Obama was the victor, when it was determined that Ohio was firmly in the president’s column.

In Minnesota, the House of Representatives and the Senate swung to the Democratic Farmer Labor (DFL) Party, giving Gov. Dayton a solid lock on promoting his agenda in the next legislative session.

Republicans had held both state houses when Dayton was swept into the governor’s mansion in 2010. He defeated Republican challenger Tom Emmer. However, the DFL governor had his hands full when dealing with a Republican Legislature that ran into snags of its own making.

“I was asked many times what would happen with a DFL governor and a DFL Legislature, and I said, ‘Progress,’” Dayton replied following a meeting with DFL leadership.

Obama and Dayton now have the luxury of pushing their own agenda. Obama has a strong Senate and a weakened Republican House of Representatives to deal with. It would seem the president holds most of the cards and will be able to force the House into more compromising and less stonewalling. The message in Washington is clear: the Democrats won and the opposition party is in a much weaker position to ward off the president’s agenda.

One thing is certain: As quickly as the political weather changed this year, it can change again in the 2014 mid-term election. There is no Bush administration to blame for circumstances in Washington. And, there’s no Republican controlled Legislature to block efforts to lead Minnesotans forward.

I got my information from business sites and CNBC so,
just to tell you that I don't frequent in fact, have not been on
the site you listed. I stick to my business sites.

As I understood, these were announced lay-offs by companies. I don't understand why you would question
their announcements of lay-offs. I hope they will be able
to call people back to work. I want people to work and
make money and pay taxes. I don't want lay-offs.

That's good that you question , maybe now you can also
question something like Benghazi, the what and why of why there was not more security ,why not help when it was happening, and finally why the different stories afterward? I'm glad to see that you have curiosity on who is laying off employees, but the killing of 4 Americans is also important.

Fair

Yes, the nation did lose and it is truly pathetic how some
commenters only care about the win and loss record.
I suggest they watch Gopher football this afternoon if they
want to be competitive.
I care about our country and if Pres. Obama would do
something that is good for this country instead of giving
to the factions that is the democrat party.

Isn't is great that I mention the spending more than we take in and get a thumbs down. I really don't care about your thumbs, but I do care that you care more about winning than the direction of the country.

I got lists of companies announcing lay-offs from different sources- CNBC and business sites and all they care about is that I might have gotten the list from a website that I don't go on, but to them it is evil. No care about the lay-offs or what that would do to our country.

As a wise one says , " liberals are worse when they get what they want".

My condolences...

to the rank and file of the Republican party for their crushing defeat in the Presidenial election.

But you should have realized that your Presidential candidate was doomed four years ago, when the "leaders" of the GOP publicly announced that their main goal for the next four years was not to improve the economy, but to make sure that President Obama was not re-elected in 2012.

And for the next four years the Republican leadership did everything they could to obstruct the President and his efforts to get the country out of the "Great Recession" left behind by Bush the Younger.

And guess what? That's STILL their objective.

Dinesh d'Souza, movie producer, discredited

Conservative hero Dinesh d'Souza hits a wall after his smash movie hit. We won't be hearing much from him.

"Long before he resigned the presidency of The King’s College, a small evangelical school in Manhattan, over his engagement to a 29-year-old woman while still married to his wife of 20 years, Dinesh D’Souza’s star in the conservative intellectual world had faded. Forsaken by the think tanks that groomed him, the precocious conservative scholar of the ’80s was hard to recognize in the bomb-throwing filmmaker of 2016: Obama’s America, which argues that Obama absorbed anticolonial hatred of America from his father."

The writer concludes: "Obama's America is already the second most successful political documentary ever. D’Souza long ago cast his lot with political entertainment, and at the right-wing box office, a lack of scholarly qualifications may be the best qualification he could have."

The media needs to clarify this issue

I don't see the GOP plugging loopholes that target the wealthy. It wasn't that long ago the GOP was calling that a tax raise. I just don't see them changing that opinion.

That puts all of what Bohner said in the toilet.

It seems common for both parties to confuse raising the tax rate with raising taxes paid by plugging loopholes in the same sentence. That's just going to confuse people

Thanks, Captron

The devil made me do it!
After the last election, I would think the GOP would try looking at a variety of sources.

Like Nate Silver's blog.

Nate is a smart guy, excellent with numbers.

I do read Nate Silver. I also look at Daily job cuts. com
and I don't know or care who runs it. It doesn't take a genius
to know that medical device companies are laying off as they
have only been talking about it for months. The same for
coal mines, Boeing, and Bristol myers. I really don't know and care where the information comes from as I read
more business newspapers, magazines, purchasing info.
Here are the political sites: Drudge, ( there are many times
lists of companies lay-offs), Daily Caller, Powerline and Weekly Standard.
I care about this country and people getting layoffs not that
you have a hangup on where people get their news from.
I hope these layoffs don't happen.
I will continue to alert of possible layoffs and new hires if I can as that is more important . I do wish people well in their job search.
