Democrats control the agenda from Washington to St. Paul

Posted: November 8, 2012 - 4:45pm

After Tuesday’s national election it is clear that Democrats control the White House, the U.S. Senate and both houses of the Minnesota Legislature.

That reversal in Minnesota gives Gov. Mark Dayton and the Democrats control of state government, something governor did not have prior to Tuesday’s outcome.

President Barack Obama won a race for a second stint as occupant of the White House over moderate Republican Mitt Romney, by sweeping key swing states.

It’s been a while since we were able to retire for the evening knowing that one of the candidates had been declared the victor. It was shortly after 10:20 p.m. CST that the word from CBS anchor Scott Pelley declared incumbent Democrat Obama was the victor, when it was determined that Ohio was firmly in the president’s column.

In Minnesota, the House of Representatives and the Senate swung to the Democratic Farmer Labor (DFL) Party, giving Gov. Dayton a solid lock on promoting his agenda in the next legislative session.

Republicans had held both state houses when Dayton was swept into the governor’s mansion in 2010. He defeated Republican challenger Tom Emmer. However, the DFL governor had his hands full when dealing with a Republican Legislature that ran into snags of its own making.

“I was asked many times what would happen with a DFL governor and a DFL Legislature, and I said, ‘Progress,’” Dayton replied following a meeting with DFL leadership.

Obama and Dayton now have the luxury of pushing their own agenda. Obama has a strong Senate and a weakened Republican House of Representatives to deal with. It would seem the president holds most of the cards and will be able to force the House into more compromising and less stonewalling. The message in Washington is clear: the Democrats won and the opposition party is in a much weaker position to ward off the president’s agenda.

One thing is certain: As quickly as the political weather changed this year, it can change again in the 2014 mid-term election. There is no Bush administration to blame for circumstances in Washington. And, there’s no Republican controlled Legislature to block efforts to lead Minnesotans forward.

Good to see Keith has evolved.

"One thing is certain:...there’s no Republican controlled Legislature to block efforts to lead Minnesotans forward."

Seems he finally realized the GOP legislature was moving the state backwards.

I just can't wait to see the plan to address the deficit and the debt. Taxes are going up, that's a given, but you can't tax enough to get us out of this. Liberals don't want to cut anything but military and that isn't going to get us out either. Plus they are going to add "free" health care for all ... how are you going to pay for that? I guess we'll address that during the next election since the GOP wanted to focus on ridiculous social issues. We're all f@%ked.

Bush III is on the way , Stand By for the Jebster !

Healthcare Power of Attorneys are feverishly being filled out across this great nation.
My notary stamp is almost worn out with everyone planning ahead now , to keep this yahoo out of their hospital rooms.

Would what the Jebster did as FL Gov. be called big government intervention in our lives ?
I guess we cant ask the Gov that replaced him ( banned for life- hand shake thing), and the current FL Gov is busy explaining why it was necessary to cut number of voting days in FL from 14 to 8 ?
That really worked well !

Anyway, get your Heathcare POA updated ,just in case...

Everyone should do health care directives and POA

it's the responsible thing to do, to be in charge of your own health care decisons.

I do not want intervention if I'm going to be sitting in a chair drooling or hooked up to a machine to live with no quality of life.

Not 'death panels' as Palin described, but each person deciding what they want 'at the end.' And remember that accidents and illness happen to young people sometimes.

I'm not going to bankrupt myself, my kids or my country at the end of life. We cannot afford it.

Finally a true statement

Mr. Hansen finally wrote something accurate - "there’s no Republican controlled Legislature to block efforts to lead Minnesotans forward." He finally noticed the Republicans are the ones holding MN hostage. A breakthrough for him? Here's hoping.
And as for the hand-wringing about the national debt, why are the Dems blamed? GWB was given a surplus; he blew that plus dug a $7B hole. The Dems inherited that just as the economy was destroyed by Geo. & Friends. So less than a year in, Obama started a continuous positive private job-growth (a huge number of job cuts in the last couple years have been from GOP controlled local and state governments cutting positions. Look at Brainerd and ISD181). Yes the debt grew - W's wars were still going on and the interest compounds. But the Dow doubled from Jan. 2009 - everyone's retirement funds have grown unless you are really bad at investing - which is why you should NOT be given vouchers for anything!
I don't know how some of you paranoids get out of bed in the morning - you are scared of so many imaginary things. Get some exercise, clear you heads, do something helpful, something real, for someone else instead of listening to the radio and TV nuts all day. You'll feel better, be healthier mentally and physically, and you might actually see what the reality is out there.

What Keith was saying is if everything gets worse over the next few years the demonrats will have no one to blame. Cap, after the first debate Romney had things going his way and it was like he took his foot off the gas, almost like he wanted to lose knowing our fiscal problems wouldnt get any better over the next four years ,setting up the presidency for Jeb.

wake up and smell the taxes

I read that the Federal Public Unions want the freeze off of their wages. They deserve this after all they spent on O's campaign. If the freeze isn't lifted immediately.. they want the raise and added bene's retroactive to Jan. lst. Lets hear it for the "public trough" gang. No one deserves raises more than the bloated Federal Government.

For the thumbs down group

Can you recall the last time you heard the liberals complain
about increased taxes? Ever wonder why?

It's because they almost always "net out" to the plus side
on any tax increase. These people are and always will be
directly or indirectly dependent on the Gov't (tax revenue)
for their existence.

Take a look at CNN MONEY, What's in the fiscal cliff?
Read it. Think about our country not yourself.

The federal gov't ( taxpayers) spend 3.8 Trillion and
take in 2.5 Trillion.
Use your MN math to figure that out.

Here is the cold hard facts of elections.

You can gloat if your guy won or cry if your guy lost but in business we don't have that option. We have to adapt to whichever party is in power. The simple truth of the matter is that I had a plan in place for whoever won. The plan that was recommended to me by my accountants that if the Democrats won with the implementation of Obamacare I will have to eliminate 2.5 fulltime positions, if the Bush tax cuts are removed I will have to eliminate an additional 2 positions. That's the reality of elections for me.

Furthermore, a close friend of mine is eliminating a greater number of workers plus he is eliminating his benefits package completely.

This is just two examples but it a fact that far more of this will be taking place across the country.

Don't make too many rash post-election decisions.

This FL biz-owner who's not laying off folks sees ACA differently: "The ACA is going to save $ long term, not cost money. We pay way more now out of our taxes for catastrophic uninsured/uncompensated care at the ED than we will come close to paying to supplement the exchanges.

The ACA is also going to force the real cost drivers in health care - the Rx and device companies - to stop charging $800 for each screw, rubber washer or heart pill it sells. They are stealing billions each year from the tax payers and heck anyone paying an insurance premium, whether an enrollee or an employer - and yet they're not the bad guy targets here, but rather its the mythological horde of mud people looking to get free stuff that is to blame?....C'mon, folks, that makes no sense. It's not even possible, let alone logical. "

Understandably, plenty of Romney supporters are still licking wounds. For some, the layoff threats now need to be a self-fulfilling promise. For other blowhards, it was just hot air. (http://www.clickorlando.com/news/David-Siegel-flip-flops-on-layoff-threa...) The Michelle Malkin/Fox list included no cause/effect evidence: http://thinkprogress.org/economy/2012/11/09/1171301/fox-news-obama-layoffs/

Step away from the ledge, take a chill pill and don't make any rash post-election decisions. Sing a verse of "the sun will come out tomorrow." The next election is only 700+ days away.

Shame On You Sadie

Shame on you Sadie for posting that list of companies supposedly laying off people because of the reelection of President Obama. What reputable source did this list come from? Fox News Nation? NewsMax? FreedomWorks?

There are hiring and firings at firms all the time, and Fox presented no evidence that these layoffs were either related to the election or unusual in any sense.

Obama has only been reelected 3 days and the right wing is already at it again. Shame on them, and shame on you.

Here is the fact.

I didn't say anything about the reelection of Obama in my post. The reputable source is my own research. It came
from none of your sources. It took awhile for me to compile.
I haven't watched Fox all day and I don't look at Fox New Nation or Freedom Works. This can be confusing, but it is the truth. I don't accept your shame blame.
Never heard of News Max. There may be concern about
the fiscal cliff coming up. Just a thought.

That is usually not how I acquire my information. I guess
being that is what you assumed, that may be how you get your information. I do watch CNBC.

Medical device manufacturers are some of the lay-offs and that may be because of the uncoming extra tax on medical devices. Remember "it's the economy stupid"? Maybe that may apply. The fiscal cliff is a big concern.

The cam "paining" is over, the signs hopefully will go down and life will go on. I thought it was going to be nice to go on line and read something other than the same people whining about the same things that are to late to change "again".
