Pollsters read the tea leaves one last time before Election Day

Posted: November 4, 2012 - 8:51pm

It’s been a long, hard fought campaign for president. It’s one of the most contentious battles for the White House since Bush-Gore in 2000. But here we are just one day before the elections and the pollsters are reading the tea leaves one last time.

In the most recent Rasmussen Reports poll has Mitt Romney and Barack Obama in a tie at 48 percent. In the Washington Post/ABC News poll Obama was in the lead with 49 percent to Romney’s 48 percent. Gallup has Romney ahead 52 percent to Obama’s 47 percent.

While most of U.S. voters will wait until polls open tomorrow to vote, Gallup reports that 15 percent of registered voters in the U.S. have already cast their ballots by Oct. 31.

“Early voting this election year is most prevalent in the West, followed by the South and the Midwest, but is relatively light in the East,” Gallup reported. “These differences largely reflect regional differences in state laws on absentee and mail voting, with two states — Washington and Oregon — focused exclusively or mainly on mail-in voting. One in four voters in the West say they have already voted, and another 30 percent plan to vote before Election Day. The combined 55 percent in the West contrasts with 40 percent in the South, 23 percent in the Midwest, and 9 percent in the East.”

Voters in the East may have wished they had joined the 9 percent who did cast their ballots earlier.

It appears that in those communities ravaged by Hurricane Sandy military vehicles will be set up as polling places. Super storm Sandy has caused extensive damage along the eastern seaboard, which may impact voter turnout.

While the hours before polls open tomorrow, the slumping economy remains the major issue in this campaign. However, Investor’s Business Daily spotlights six primary concerns heading into tomorrow’s voting: The future of ObamaCare, the size and intrusiveness of government, tax rates, America’s standing in the world, and the long-term makeup of the Supreme Court. Hmm, apparently the economy is slipping in importance among Wall Street folks. It will be interesting to observe voter comments as they leave the polling places around the country.

Indeed, shadrack. And his fact-free zone seems to be

widening as election day approaches. A piece published a few days ago in the Wall Street Journal summarizes the current economy much better: "A Slow but Steady Climb to Prosperity: The U.S. economy is improving. After the worst recession since the 1930s, healing takes a long time." (WSJ, 10/31)

Hansen's reference to some mythical "slumping economy" is contradicted by facts. But, as Princeton Prof. Binder, the author of above piece noted:

'Facts are stubborn things; and whatever may be our wishes, our inclinations, or the dictates of our passion, they cannot alter the state of facts and evidence." When John Adams penned those words in 1770, he probably didn't anticipate modern presidential campaigns, where wishes, inclinations and passions—even outright denials—often run roughshod over facts."

I think that it will take 9

I think that it will take 9 years at this rate of new jobs
to reach full employment.
Prof. Binder is someone that you may want to check
his facts and conclusions. before signing your name.
Only 63% of capable and available people are working
and contirbuting to the federal treasurer.
Millions are out of work, under employed and have
quit looking.
Everyone currently under the age of 18 owes $250,000
(estimate) towards the debt.
This is disgusting to me,to leave this debt.
If people want to continue all the existing programs without
cutting then, they better get to work and pay taxes.
The gravy train is over and it is time help out.

Purposed: No, the WSJ is just frequently quoted by

Republicans, and chosen by BDD for source of "other" opinions. Not gospel, in the least, especially their editorial pages. Thanks for sharing your opinion, though! I like reading stuff you write! I'll still agree with the Princeton professor's "spin" -- if that's what you think it is -- on the subject of the economy. Enjoy the countdown to election day, Purposed!

The gravy train is over and it is time help out.

That doesn't fit into the program that 80% of Obama supporters endorse.
That means, either help dump the emperor and his Czars tomorrow, or get ready for your move to their communes.

Romney's supporters sign their checks on the front and Obama supporters sign theirs on the back.

FNB, I don't work for you.

FNB, I don't work for you. If you want to hang that taxpayer angle over me, I'll gladly pay you back your 3.65 cents which may have contributed to my paycheck. Then again, I would feel obliged to reciprocate in asking you to give back a portion of your welfare that I help finance. Let's just call it a draw, huh? Besides, it's really hard to get exact change for 3.65 cents.

You can't give just mine back

you have to give it all back because we taxpayers are are a union of people. You can't pick and choose when you are in a union. It's one for all and all for one. Give it all back and resign or admit that I am your employer. I love how you trap yourself.

Now you are just confusing

Now you are just confusing me. Here I thought you were a Democrat by you being on welfare, then I saw your 8:32 post, which clealry showed the Republican in you (as evidenced by incoherent rambling), and now you welcome the idea of callign yourself a union? Which side are you on, my man? One for all and al for one sound slike a) comic book jargon or b) socialism. Is FNB a socialist in denial portraying himself as a Republican? The amzing thing is I managed to type that all the while laughing hysterically at the fact you think I am subject to your demands.

FNB, I think you got trapped in your own trap, my friend . . . . or shall I say, 'comrade?'. Good luck to your candidate tomorrow. I hope he gets relected to another 4 years!

Do you teach children or adults??
$3.65 an hour doesn't cover health care cost for a private employee thanks to demo(c)RATS like you.

Picke

Uh oh, now we have two Dispatch Diatribe Dayjobbers speaking in tongues. Hard for me to even engage in such a productive discussion when the other party can't even offer a coherent rebuttal. (By the way, don't know where you got $3.65 per hour, but that fuzzy math thing is not alien to your party)

Good luck to you today. May your candidate keep your welfare dollars flowing, gentlemen.

don't recall $3.65 being an

don't recall $3.65 being an hourly rating. You simply can't read. At least I can actually understand your most recent posting. Improvement comes slowly for some.
