Catholics support no

Posted: October 28, 2012 - 9:30pm

We are a Catholic couple who were fortunate enough to have recently celebrated our 50th anniversary.

Same sex couples who love each other should have the same opportunity to profess that love in a legal marriage.

The church speaks of marriage to be only afforded to those who can procreate. However, persons of our age and others who are incapable of procreation may marry if they are of opposite sex. Gays and lesbians are allowed to legally adopt and have children through assistance of donors or surrogate parents. In the last 20 years, we have witnessed many same sex couples who raised beautiful loving families.

As a practicing attorney for close to 50 years, I have witnessed the Constitution used to safeguard individual rights. Marriage is a civil law, and the church should not try and stamp its sacramental restrictions on that law.

We are Catholics voting “no” on the marriage amendment.
