Democracy in action was the headline attached to Tuesday’s front page story of the Brainerd Dispatch that documented the protest and counter protest of the war in Afghanistan and the use of drones by the U.S. military. The demonstrations took place just outside of the main entrance to Camp Ripley.
Each group was relatively small. Each group was demonstrating to get its point across to those observing the event.
A Little Falls based group, all 11 of them — Little Falls Partners for Peace — was at the Army National Guard Camp Ripley to demand an immediate pull-out of U.S. troops from Afghanistan and the cessation of drone warfare, which the group alleges is indiscriminate.
On the other side of County Road 115, were counter protestors, headed by a group of 20 veterans of Afghanistan and Vietnam.
What was actually taking place Monday was American democracy in action. It was peaceful demonstration and exercise of free speech by two groups with opposing points of view. It was peaceful. It was lawful. It was the essence of what America stands for and why our Constitution guarantees the rights of both groups to clearly demonstrate and state their views.
Perhaps the demonstration and counter demonstration was summed up best by Camp Ripley Post Commander Col. Scott St. Sauver who watched the activity from inside the main gate to the camp: “The reason we (the U.S. military) do what we do is so they can exercise their rights. So that’s pretty important.”
Col. St. Sauver got it right. Each group that chose to face off on an issue of national, regional and personal importance was well within their rights as citizens to disagree without resorting to violence.
Both groups and the men and women of Camp Ripley are to be commended for their restraint and their willingness to actively demonstrate their beliefs.

Lets all hope ,Not too many citizens were inspired by the aging AZ veteran politician who cant remember where his 13 homes are. Johns favorite things include saying " launch those aircraft ". Seems the GOP convention goers had a Colin Powell replacement as well , the former Sec. of State.
If anyone should understand leading from behind , (trolling for a job) Condi certainly would ,based on her time with W Bush.
Was interested to hear the Mittster has retained 17 of W Bushs International Policy Advisors.
What luck that they were still all available after 4 years.
A strong, intelligent, articulate, black conservative woman...
...really blows your mind, doesn't it, Cap'n? The idea that Condoleeza Rice needs to "troll" for a job is laughable. She could have any job she wanted.
Thanks for a good editorial, Mr. Hansen.
Amen.
Gutless Dispatch Pulls Article
The democracy in action article must have gotten a little to hot for Denny Newman. He ran to Keith Hansen for back-up. Instead of searching out the other side of the story, the Dispatch pulled the post. If Denny Newman can post and run with his own article, then this web site is useless and he should be fired. Shame on you Mr. Hansen for allowing him to operate this way. Let it be known that the peace demonstrators started the violence back in the 60/70's and it has never ended. We were serving in a war zone and couldn't defend ourselves back then in our own country. Now you expect it to just go away. You started the violence behind our backs and now you expect us to just forget about it. Not going to happen, as long as a Viet Veteran still lives. This was not a peaceful demonstration at Ripley but rather an attempt to reignite the fires of Viet Nam. Keep it up as you have successfully lit the fire. The veterans of Nam will not let this happen again. To the Dispatch, you have chosen your side in this issue, unfortunately, it was the wrong side. Put the Democracy In Action post back on line and let the people speak. If you are going to use this web site to post your viewpoints and then pull it down and run, your paper just reverts back to the old. Mr. Hansen, I give you more credit than that. Apparently, allowing Denny Newman to use his judgement on this website is not working as he has exhibited poor judgement and he should be replaced by the Dispatch, not defended. Hiding this article behind a new title is just an attempt at skewing the story. If you are to be considered a reputable publication, put the original posts back on line along with the original title, and let the story be heard, not censored.
I found the article and ongoing comment section
by clicking on the video, and following prompts. This is, admittedly, a bit of a roundabout way, but it's still there, with new posts, Charlie. Not sure why it doesn't show up under "Most Commented", however, the easiest place to access it.
I'm totally at a loss as to why you think the protest at Ripley wasn't, technically, "peaceful". With all due respect (and I mean that, because you served in a difficult situation), your thinly-veiled threats of future violence don't promote your cause. Even if I was able to attend on 9/21, I'd be a bit afraid to do so based on some of the comments you've made.
Obama Rejects Veterans
All this week, in Indianapolis, Indiana, the American Legion has held it's annual National Convention. There are Minnesota Veterans there representing our states Veterans. On Tuesday, August 28th, president Obama was to address the convention. He coward out and sent a video instead. True to his committment to our country and RESPECT for our Veterans, Mitt Romney was to address the convention on Wednesday, 29 August. HE SHOWED UP. Now, to the Veterans of this great country, I ask that you cast your ballots accordingly in November.
Charlie, here's the link to newer comments, and you
can access ongoing ones by above method, if Dispatch doesn't return the article to "Most Commented" section. Quite honestly, they may have pulled the article from "Most Commented" purely based on what they perceived to be threatening posts. I saw them that way.

Neither major political party in this Presidential
election includes a veteran. Thanks for sharing your political views, Charlie. By contrast, I'm very pleased with the support for veterans shown by both President Obama and Mrs. Obama. Pres. Obama was politely received by American Legion convention (where he was able to attend in person) in the past, just as Gov. Romney was politely received this year. Veterans know very little about a potential Pres. Romney vis-a-vis foreign affairs, but Pres. Obama has a record that many veterans support. Veterans, like the rest of Americans, are not of a single mind when it comes to politics. Ain't American grand!
like the GOP last night
I was disappointed in John McCain beating the drums of war and suggesting sending in more military to other regions....
charlie - get some counseling for your rage. Do not stir the pot with peaceful protesters. It looks like they all (both sides) did just fine that day. Now you want to mobilize and create a war zone?
Viet Nam was rough. Many are not over it and never will be but check your rage at the door. It will destroy your health. Do not keep fighting that war over and over. It needs to end.
I have noticed the paper back burnering older articles when they start repeating. I am happy they move on to new ones.
Rice must have forgotten
how her term as SOS ended with US polling waaaaaay behind President Obama in support by European and other countries.
European polls show they want him reelected.
Spin that.
Bubba/captron
"Technically peaceful" are words that these protesters have always used to hide/camoflage their agenda. The words "Protest" and "Counter Protest" in the title to Mr. Hansen's article admit to violence. I suggest you look in Websters dictionary and you will find the definition leaves it wide open. "Peaceful" is not used in the definition. People died because of these "technically peaceful" protesters. You would be doing the Veterans a great service by not showing up at the protest as you would be helping us send our message without violence. Bubba, this statement is not personal. As to the comments on John McCain, you, Captron, are disgusting. This man served his country and paid the price in a POW Camp. He is the ultimate hero. Only those that gave their lives deserve more respect. And many more, including myself, came home disabled. Fortunately, I am still able to defend myself and other Veterans against the likes of you and your comments. I sincerely ask that you posters show more respect in your articles toward our veterans (exclude me if you want) and think twice before you make posts like Captron did. Thank You and enjoy your freedom. Remember, "ALL GAVE SOME-SOME GAVE ALL" May God Bless.
"Technically peaceful"
I hear your meaning, Charlie, and that referred, in this case, to absence of physical violence (which is what I'm sure those at Ripley's gate and others are praying to avoid). There are, indeed, kinds of violence that don't physically harm a person. After posts I've seen in Dispatch, however, I'd fear the physical threats. We need to hear each others words, spoken in peace. I'm not following how "Protest and Counter-Protest" admit to violence?
Destroyed Health
Hey Snowda. I suggest you look in a mirror before you start worrying about me destroying my health. My health was destroyed in Viet Nam. What's your excuse.
Sorry Charlie ,Maybe Ill bump into you at a local DAV event
Look for a retired SGM wearing wearing a floral print shirt from the PX in the Hale Koa lower level, and sporting an black 88th RSC ball style cap.
Hopefully your not as nasty & judgemental in person !
I can share with you some great stories about being a property book officer in Balad .... And how much $ & material went astray and competely unaccounted for in Iraq.
Guess a few mortars and the rockets red glare must have had an impact on you huh ?
Peace Brother !
Thanks Bubba
Thank you for reminding me of the political status of Veterans. I have often preached that Veterans are "A" political however I find myself speaking on behalf of veterans when I can't and shouldn't. My own political viewpoints are not necessarily those of other veterans. I try to catch myself but sometimes miss. However I will always speak in favor of veterans, not necessarily on behalf of them.
Sorry Charlie
Not at a local DAV event. I am a former commander of Chapter II, St. Paul DAV and am now a lifetime member of the National Chapter. Thank you for your service and congrats on your retirement. As for the unaccounted dollars in Iraq, that seems to be a haunting thing throughout this administration in more ways than one. It must be that darn W again.
Charlie and I talked

A couple other clarifications:
1. Neither the article or the listing in most commented are "pulled". All article headlines eventually move off the home page to make room for new headlines. The "most commented" setting is set to show most commuted articles in the last XX hours. I think its the last 48 hours but i can check and see.
2. Because of the way our deadlines work, I believe Keith was unaware of my reply to Charlie when he wrote this opinion.
Charlie.....how come you haven't revealed your full name yet
I am waiting for your response to my invitation to fully identify yourself. Isn't it interesting that more active military gave more money to the Ron Paul campaign than to Romney or President Obama. I suspect that is directly related to his anti-war stance. Many active soldiers do not agree with their orders, now or in the past. I should use the term object.....which is similar to protest. I object, protest and despise warfare for resources or aggression. We had no basis for an invasion of Vietnam, Iraq, or Afghanistan. And you haven't answered the blaring question as to how you suggest paying for continuing militarization and aggression....drone warfare and all other military spending. Fifty six cents of every dollar for every Minnesotan is spent on militarization. That figure is outrageous and unacceptable. Look up MN ASAP. Jack Nelson Pallmeyer has called for a decrease in military spending and the resolution will be presented to many Minnesota City Council officials for consideration in the near future. Pay close attention to who is on board supporting this resolution. Al Franken has written a bill to mandate requiring funding upfront any new wars. Unfortunately, it hasn't been passed. There is no answer as to how we as a society are going to pay the military bill in the future, to say nothing of the money borrowed from other nations to pay for past aggressions. Vets for Peace is a great organization and seeks to open dialogue for a better future for our nation. I hope you read my comments to you. If not, I encourage you to read them now.
I forgot to sign...I am Robin Hensel
Organizer of both protests(objections) to drone warfare and call for an immediate withdrawal of all troops from Afghanistan. Like one of the signs I made said "On the plane now....out of Afghanistan"
The Best way we can support
The Best way we can support out troops, is by making sure that WE don't send them into harms way, and by keeping them home where they belong. And that means home from all bases around the world. Like the board game RISK, if you spread out your army, you leave your home base open and inviting for an attack, yet a strong HOME defense is always the best offense! Supporting out troops is not encouraging them to fight in a foreign land on false and misleading so called "evidence" while we sit home and watch their actions on TV like it's a video game.
The ONLY reason why we are in the M.E. is because of ONE country that we dare not speak against. (the 30,000 lb pink elephant in the middle of the room). The day you open your eyes and finally acknowledge to yourself that they and their media monopoly are the ones who are manipulating public opinion on both sides of the issue, is the day when all of this can stop.

Reality Check on military spending
http://www.ask.com/wiki/List_of_countries_by_military_expenditures
No one is suggesting that the United States 'disarm' but I am asking you to look at the distribution of money spent vs. other countries. Can we continue to be the world's police and should we? George Bush Sr. WARNED his son GWB to NOT go into Iraq. He should have stayed in Afghanistan and pursued bin Laden. He diverted course and look where it got us. Many thanks to the military and our current President (who ordered the raid) for ridding the world of bin Laden FINALLY.
My Name
You can get my name off of my dog tags if you ever get close enough. In the meantime,in order to protect my family from wackos like you (oops, can't call her a wacko, she has 2 attorneys) those that need to know my name, already do. It's no secret to those that need to know. Money for continued warfare and aggression can come from Obama. Just start the printing machine. Isn't that how the libs get more money. Like the little boy said to his mother "I know you have more money cause there are still some check blanks in your checkbook." Sorry about the dry humor. It's hard to lower myself to your mentality. Peace, sister, peace. "A show of force is a great deterrent to violence." It creates peace. It worked last week, it can work next week. Al Franken is the biggest disgrace to our veterans that ever illegally walked the halls of congress. Just ask him how he violated the 10th amendment at the Hastings Veterans Home. Don't talk to me about the funny boy Al. You'll lose every time. I believe Minnesota has a season on Doves now. Be careful where you fly. I'm beginning to like your humor.
Snowda, Bin laden has been
Snowda,
Bin laden has been dead for years. That raid was a fake trumped up story to garner public support.
And Neil Armstrong didn't land on the moon?
How about that mouthy Navy Seal out trying to sell books? He has quite a future.
If Bush had taken him out on his watch, he wouldn't be avoiding the spotlight in Dallas, you silly old men. Do you have any facts or just fantasy video games?
Yes, Mr Kyle is sure being
Yes, Mr Kyle is sure being trumped up by the military complex. First, he had to lie about punching Ventura at the Seal bar which has to totally debunked. And debunked again by my late cousin who was a Seal.
A dead Bin Laden
You are so right mav. He was dead long before Obama came along to take credit. Some day, it will become de-classified and you can all read about it. Obama needed a re-election bump so he took credit. And don't ask me how I know. It's still classified.
