Gallup poll shows voters not better off than in 2008

Posted: August 20, 2012 - 6:58pm

A majority of swing-state voters are not better off than they were four years ago, according to a recent Gallup poll. Gallup reports that 56 percent of voters in swing states — Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Michigan, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina (site of the 2012 Democrat convention), Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Wisconsin — are not better off than they were in 2008.

Gallup conducted the survey of 970 registered voters from Aug. 6-13.

Forty percent indicated to poll takers that they are better off today than they were in 2008.

Former President Reagan posed the question to voters in 1980 when he was running against then President Carter: “Are you better off today than you were four years ago?” the Gipper queried a group of voters. The answer was a resounding “no” as voters went to the polls in November of 1980 and swept Carter out of office, with only Minnesota voting for the incumbent president.

Of the 56 percent who indicated they were not better off, 20 percent blame President Obama for their plight. Seven percent blamed former President George W. Bush for their dilemma and 15 percent blame both presidents. Ironically, 14 percent of those polled blamed neither Bush nor Obama.

When Gallup queried those taking the poll whether Obama is handling the economy well, 52 percent of those polled said, no he has not handled the economy well, while 46 percent said he has.

Pollsters asked registered voters if they would be better off under Obama or Mitt Romney — both candidates garnered only 44 percent. However, those persons who weighed in on the initial question — whether they are better off today than they were four years ago — 27 percent said they would be better off if Obama were re-elected and 61 percent indicated they would fare better if Romney is elected president.

What is one to conclude from this latest polling? Well, the majority of people polled lack confidence in the president’s ability to lead the U.S. economy out of the malaise it finds itself in, yet Romney breaks even with the president among those polled to bring U.S. out of the recession we find ourselves in at present.

Conclusion: It’s going to be a wild sprint to the finish line for both candidates.

Gallup poll shows voters not better off than in 2008

No big surprise. Any business, sports team or country is destined to fail when they refuse to work together for the common good. I remember as a ten year old in 1956 the first time I helped my grampa with the harvest. Every one of his neighbors and their families pitched in to help. In the coming weeks we helped them. Some were similar to us while others went to different churches and spoke different languages. The amount of work we got done was impressive.

When Mitch McConnell said his main goal as the Republican leader in the Senate was to prevent President Obama from having a second term I don't know about the rest of you but I felt like I was hit point blank with a sack of manure. No way, no how would this work to better our country. He, along with his fellow republicans even signed a back room pledge to follow the party line reguardless of the harm it could cause.
Is this the way our country was designed to work?

President Reagan was able to accomplish much because he had a team that would work with him. The opposition party didn't run to the back room like a junior high clique and sign an oath to either sabatoge our Presidents economic planning or lose their parties political funding. Ronald Reagan adjusted taxe rates in 1982, 1984, 1985, 1986 and 1987. He would have had no economic planning if these childish activities such as pledge signing had been in effect at that time.

Let's roll up our sleeves and get rid of the garbage in Washington, let our representatives know their high school hot dog attitude hurts everyone.

More Keith Hansen is actually really less.....

If we could only ask the Gipper again, what to do ?
Since that is unlikely ,Guess we can only ask his son...
Maybe if Keith faced the "FACTS" that thanks to the horrible policies of the last Republicon in the White House, we went from losing 800,000 jobs a month to actually regularly gaining some , and have seen the DJIA increase 54% in the last 3 years. Im on the edge of my chair waiting to be inspired by the talking heads getting ready to head toTampa. More material for entertainers..... keep thinking Liberty !

So Dems only agree with the Gallup Poll when it suits them?

No big surprise. The first poster is basically saying it's the Republican's fault because they don't roll over and give 'bama everything he wants. Some how being a farmer back 56 years ago equals the political landscape of today. Nice stretch of the imagination. With that same logic, I would ask, where are your farmers now, aside from the ones who are looking for more Ag Welfare. I am not quite sure what dutch is trying to say, but maybe he could put a picture of Representative Rangle, or better yet Rep. Gauthier!

I think he was trying to say

I think he was trying to say that most of us would fare better if the people we elected could compromise. Towing the party line on either side is only going to keep us stuck. When this election rolls around, I will be looking for moderate candidates who are willing to work together and be open minded. Sometimes conservative ideas are the best. Sometimes liberal ones are. Sometimes the best course of action is to meet in the middle. We need to elect a group of people who understand that.

I don't think mill workers or loggers are doing better than they were 4 years ago. A hardboard plant in Duluth closed today. 140 people out of work at the plant as of today.

Scary:

I'm not quite sure what Willard Romney has to do with this article, but whatever. Besides, I thought the auto industry was doing so well. Chairwoman Schultz said that U.S. auto makers had a record June for auto jobs created.

Scary sure knows how to lie with charts...

...

Cherry-picking data points is a classic way to lie with numbers. Things sure look different when you look at Bush's entire term than when you only start looking at the stock market numbers for Bush when things started going South in 2008 thanks to the economic catastrophe that was initiated by the misguided Community Revitalization Act.

Also, we are not adding jobs nearly quickly enough to replace the jobs we've lost since 2007, let alone to accommodate the new people who are entering the job market. Why don't you show total number of people who were/are currently employed for both Bush's and Obama's term. Because one of the many ways Pres. Obama is fudging the numbers is by putting people on welfare and getting them on disability. This only become apparent when you look at the total number of people working, not when you look at unemployment rates.

Actually scary, you have no idea what you are yaking about

I work for the auto industry, and we are barely holding our own. Maybe instead of reading leftist columns that always paint everything in technicolor, you could get out into the real world, like a job, and open your eyes!

Maybe if we would take a look

Maybe if we would take a look at (and change) some of the stupid Federal Regulations we have on the books, we would get some of those jobs back from overseas.

Government Motors

General Motors still owes 20 billion to the U.S. taxpayers.
The general motors stock has to double just for the taxpayers
to break even. It continues to lose value.
Is this what you mean by the auto industry doing well?
General Motors, I believe, did go through some kind of
bankruptcy that Mr. Romey recommended.

scary, I just want to note that we could take you alittle more
seriously, if you would be serious yourself. By that I mean
you can make your same comments by leaving out jr.bush and willard romney. It is hard to take you seriously when
the comments are so sarcastic and hardened.
This advice is worth what you are paying for it. I
mean no disrespect to you.

Scary , Dont waste your time & energy on some of these yahoos

They dont care about facts , much less have any common sense most of the time. If your( dedicated) fan base out there cant figure out where they are now and how they got there.
Its a fairly safe bet they have absolutely no idea where they are going.
You have to remember their whack job MINORITY viewpoint has been clouded for some time ,so they still are unable to deal with reality. Some medical folks actually have treatment plans for these people who suffer from obvious , serious irrational mis statements of issues and emotional imbalance.
If they dont get their way they stomp their feet and cry foul, then ask your posts be deleted. Remember the words of the Newt Gingrich , " Radical right wing engineering wont work ".

If the EPA were to rule supreme in other nations like they do here the rest of the world would already be bankrupt.

The Dow also shows that it was higher during Bush's term than...

...it ever has been during Obama's. What's hilarious is that we were MUCH better off when it was high during Bush's term than we are now. So what does that tell us? That what is happening on Wall Street is a poor indicator of what is happening on Main Street. Also, you should know that what is happening now in the Dow right now could very well be because investors are projecting a Romney win. The Dow is a advance measure of what investors think is going to happen six to nine months from now. Funny, ay?

The taxpayers haven't given Romney a penny to put in offshore

accounts. The fact that you think the money Mitt has earned through the sweat of his brow belongs to the government says a lot about your twisted thinking, Scary. Further, if the Dems would stop fixating on taxing the life out of corporations so they can't be competitive on the world market, maybe we could keep more companies on our shores. (BTW, both leftist and conservative business owners offshore and outsource work when they can't be competitive thanks to the greedy "takers".)

And the tax money we are giving to the greedy union members at GM is often coming from people who are not making nearly as much. Do I object to transferring wealth from the less wealthy to the more wealthy with such transfers? Yes, I do. Why should the auto industry get bailed out when many other industries are forced out of business? How is this fair?

Radical

Radical right wing engineering won't work as we have seen
that radical left wing engineering isn't working.
The attempt at radical left wing engineering is what we
are witnessing with President Obama. Why people
didn't get that with the "hope and change" is beyond
comprehension.. Why people continue to not see it now,
is mind numbing.

I care deeply about this country. The direction that
President Obama is determined to take us has many, many
people concerned.

Scary:

I think what Sadie meant by her comment was that if you used George W. Bush instead of "jr. bush" and Mitt Romney instead of "willard romney" you could be taken more seriously. It is kind of like how people think calling President Obama "barry" is disrespectful.

Also, by leaving one small word out of my comment, the word "some", it changes the context of what I said. There is a difference between saying "stupid federal regulations" and "some stupid federal regulations".

Tootsie - thank you, that is what I was trying to say. As a

Recently I read an article on postmodernism which
Scary may want to read. Just google the word.

scary good chart

it shows me that the crapola hit the fan when the dems took control of the house and senate and it shows me that things rebounded an extreme little when the pubbies took control of the house.

However since it has been proven that the senate (lead by libbies) wont pass a budget and Obama is, well Obama, the economy is starting to tank yet again.

Thank you so much scary for showing us what everyone should realize....the dems killed our economy
