County-paid burials would only be available by special request, under a policy being considered by Crow Wing County welfare authorities. If adopted, the policy would require cremation of most bodies whose funeral is at public expense.

30 years ago (1981)

Remains of a foot encased in a sock and work shoe found at Camp Ripley have been tentatively identified as those of an area man missing nearly 14 years. The 58-year-old trapper was noted missing when he failed to return home. His car, rifle and traps were found.

40 years ago (1971)

Authorities were searching for a 21-year-old man who escaped from the Brainerd city jail early today. Police say he used a saw to cut out one section of bar, leaving a gap 12 inches wide. He then removed his clothes, smeared himself with Vaseline and wriggled through.

60 years ago (1951)

A large buck deer, which was near death yesterday in the ice floes on Mille Lacs Lake, was free today thanks to some Onamia citizens and game wardens. The deer was brought to shore coated with ice, tied to a toboggan and brought to a garage to thaw out, and released.

(Adv.) An Announcement from the Officers and Directors of Citizens State Bank of Brainerd: The Board of Directors in meeting assembled yesterday, elected Otto Bremer to fill the post of president, vacated by the death of beloved co-worker Robert Tinkelpaugh.

100 years ago (1911)

The freshmen played the seniors in the high school auditorium last evening in a game of basketball and defeated them 11 to 9. Capt. Mahlum was in charge of the seniors and Day captained the freshmen. This first game of the season drew a large crowd.
