Kathleen Marie Broussard Hedlund, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend joined family and friends in heaven on Jan. 6, 2013. She was preceded in death by husband, Richard; and mother, Sylvia. Survived and loved by son, Paul (Denise); granddaughter, Sunshine (Mark); grandson, Andrew (Nicole); great-grandson, William; and extended family and friends in Minnesota and Louisiana, including her much loved traveling companions.
Kay grew up in St. Martinville, Louisiana, and after graduating from Mercy High, she went to school to be a nurse. In 1954, she moved to Minnesota with her husband, Richard, and her son, Paul. Kay worked much of her life as a labor and delivery nurse, first at Mount Sinai Hospital and then at Fairview Southdale Hospital. By the time Kay retired in 1992, she had assisted in more than 5,000 births. After retirement, Kay moved to her cabin on South Long Lake in Brainerd where she happily lived for the next 20 years. Kay had a big smile and an infectious laugh. She will be missed by those who loved her, including her Cajun cousins.
A memorial service for Kay will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 12, with visitation one hour before, and snacks and refreshments following. During the memorial people are encouraged to share stories about Kay. Casual attire is encouraged. The memorial service will be held at Nelson-Doran Funeral Home, 202 Eighth Ave. NE, Brainerd, MN 56401.
