Clarence L. Harting passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2012, at Good Samaritan Society – Bethany in Brainerd surrounded by his family. He was born on Dec. 3, 1922, to Clarence “Dutch” E. and Agnes (Torba) Harting in Brainerd. He graduated from the Brainerd High School in 1941 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942 and served his country until December 1945. He married Shirley Norton in 1945 and they were married for over 55 years. His working years were spent with the BNSF Railroad both here in Brainerd and Superior, Wis., until he retired in 1981.
In 2004 he married Shirley Sculley of Brainerd and enjoyed four years of marriage.
He enjoyed many years of retirement spending the summers at the cabin on Crow Wing Lake and winters in Apache Junction, Ariz. His favorite pastimes were his family activities, visiting with friends, square dance calling and dancing, ballroom dancing and fishing.
He was a member of St. Andrew’s Catholic Parish, a 67-year member of the American Legion Post and a lifetime member of the V.F.W.
He was preceded in death by his two wives, Shirley Norton Harting and Shirley Sculley Harting; his parents; brother, Arthur; and grandson, Daniel.
Survivors are his sons, Steve, of LaPine, Ore., and Robert (Judi), of Brainerd; seven grandsons; four great-grandsons; seven great-granddaughters; stepchildren and stepgrandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, Sept. 16, 2012, from 3-5 p.m. at Nelson-Doran Funeral Home in Brainerd. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 17, 2012, at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Brainerd with Father Keith Bertram officiating. Burial will in Evergreen Cemetery with military honors provided by the Brainerd American Legion and V.F.W Color Guards. Lunch will be served at the American Legion following the burial.
