Edwin “Dutch” L. Anderson Jr., age 84, resident of Brainerd, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, Aug. 24, 2012.
Ed was born in Brainerd on Sept. 14, 1927, to Edwin L. Anderson Sr. and Virginia (Potvin) Anderson. He married Leila “Dolly” Klein on April 15, 1950.
He grew up in Brainerd, Minn., and served our country as a member of the United States Navy from April 1945 – September 1948. He served aboard various ships in the Pacific, with tours in California; Pearl Harbor, Hawaii; Okinawa, Japan; along with multiple floats to China. Ed worked for the Northern Pacific Railroad/Burlington Northern Railroad for 41 years, retiring in 1984. He was a lifetime member of the VFW, as well as a member of the American Legion. He was a charter member of St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Brainerd. He enjoyed all outdoor activities, especially camping, fishing and hunting. Once Ed retired, he and Dolly took up square dancing with Ray’s Promenaders in Brainerd. He was also a member of Paul Bunyan’s Good Sams. In all his years, Ed never met a piece of equipment he could not build or repair. His hands were truly gifted.
Survivors include Ed’s wife Leila, one brother John (Lavina) Anderson; sister-in-law Faye Anderson; and brother-in-law Arlyn Laughton, all of Brainerd, Minn. He is also survived by one son, Mark (Carla) Anderson of Blackduck, Minn.; three daughters, Diane (Warren) Heywood of San Angelo, Texas; Joan (Paul) Jenkins and Sharon (Todd) DeChaine of Brainerd, Minn.; nine grandchildren, Leah Stroeing, Cara Segura, Sean Heywood, Paul Anderson, Aaron Jenkins, Rita Anderson, Brett Jenkins, Nicole DeChaine and Nathan DeChaine; eight great-grandchildren, Jordan Huber, Alexis Huber, Julian Segura, Oliver Stroeing, Maureen Stroeing, Alex Segura, Lizette Huber, and Mason Segura.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Joseph Anderson and sister Dora Laughton.
Mass of Christian burial will be 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 27, 2012, at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Brainerd. Visitation will begin at the church one hour before Mass. Burial will follow Mass at Evergreen Memorial Gardens in Brainerd.
