Richard LeRoy Sears, 80, of Brainerd, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, Aug. 17, 2012. Richard was devoted to his faith, his family, and lived a life of service to others. He came to a relationship with Christ and was baptized in 1970. He taught his children to love and serve the Lord, and to work hard. He was expressive in his love for his family. Throughout his life, he was involved in his church, the Gideons International, local politics and the NEA. He enjoyed visiting others, hunting and fishing with his children and grandchildren, and leading Bible studies at nursing homes.
Born May 31, 1932, in Brainerd to Edward and Sarah (Montgomery) Sears, Richard grew up in Brainerd, and graduated in 1952 from Brainerd High School and later Bemidji College. He worked for Bang Printing in Brainerd for many years, and he was also a dedicated teacher in Swanville and Spring Grove, Minn., public schools. He served in the Army during the Korean conflict.
He married Marilyn Smith on Aug. 3, 1956. They had three children: James Sears, of Chesapeake, Va., Edward (Dadra) Sears, of Arvada, Colo., and Suzanne (Daniel) Crick, of Menno, S.D. On Aug. 16, 1969, he married Vyolett Kumm. They had two children: Mary (Ronald) Robertson, of Olathe, Kan., and Frank Sears, of Staples, Minn.
He is survived by his wife, Vyolett; his five children; one sister, Ruth (Bob) Milloch, of Baxter; one brother, Clarence (Litta) Sears, of Pine River; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his first wife, Marilyn.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2012, at 11 a.m. at Brainerd Church of the Nazarene on Highway 371 North in Brainerd with Pastor Ron Keysor officiating. Burial was at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery.
