Carl (Ben) Nygaard, age 94, of Brainerd, died July 7, 2012. He was born Aug. 8, 1917, in Brainerd. He was a Brainerd High School graduate and retired from Potlatch. Ben enjoyed the outdoors — hunting, fishing, gardening and woodcarving. He also enjoyed watching the Twins, Vikings and Timberwovles on TV. He was a World War II veteran, serving three years overseas with the 21st General Hospital in England, North Africa, Italy and France. He was a life member of the VFW Post No. 1647, American Legion Post No. 255, and the Elks Lodge No. 615. Ben was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Brainerd.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce (Woodhouse) Nygaard; one son, Jeffrey Nygaard, of Elko, Nev., four stepdaughters, Diane (Lee) Storm, of Mesa, Ariz., Pam (Darrel) McAllister, of Universal City, Texas, Cynde (Joe) Nelson, of Big Lake, Minn., Wendy (George) Schaefer, of Marshall, Minn.; 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Evelyn (Larson) Nygaard; two sisters, Selma Mosby and Thora Mutsch; two brothers, Arthur and Harold Nygaard.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 11, 2012, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Brainerd with Pastor Mark Skinner officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery with military honors provided by American Legion Post No. 255 Color Guard. Visitation will be the hour before services Wednesday at the church.
