Marie E. Ellingson, age 97, a long time resident of Brainerd, passed away on Friday, Feb. 24, 2012, at Good Samaritan Society-Woodland. She was born on Sept. 1, 1914, in Hampshire, Ill., to August and Rosa Lena (Conro) Erdmann. Marie was a graduate of St. Francis School and Washington High School.
She was a founding member of St. Andrew’s Catholic Church and served as a Eucharistic Minister. Marie was a member of the D of I, Foresters and Guild into her 90s. She enjoyed playing cards (especially bridge and 500), working on crafts, knitting afghans, baby hats and booties, square dancing, Sunday drives with her late husband, traveling with her siblings to family reunions and being with her children and their families. Marie also enjoyed many “Mystery Trips” to various states. She was the Minnesota Twins fan “extraordinaire.” Marie worked at a number of businesses in Brainerd, the most rewarding being a psychiatric technician at the Brainerd State Hospital.
Marie is survived by a son, Don Ellingson, of Fruita, Colo.; two daughters, Kathy Simonson, of Brainerd, and Luann Thompson, of Bemidji; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Lucille Mayo, of Montgomery, La.; and a brother, William Erdmann, of Livingston, Mont.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John; her daughter, Judy Koenig; and a granddaughter, Andrea Koenig.
The following are special friends of Marie’s that provided her much needed assistance, love and companionship in her later years. Marie considered them her “extended family.” They are: Joyce Unger, Lynn Richter and Carolyn Vosler.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, March 2, 2012, at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Brainerd. Visitation will begin the hour before service at the church on Friday. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Gardens.
