PINE RIVER — Bernadine Syhre, age 93, of Pine River, passed away Friday, Feb. 17, 2012, at Brookside Comfort Care in Pine River. She was born on May 1, 1918, in Luray, Mo., to John and Grace Black.
Bernadine grew up in Luray, Mo., and Little Falls, Minn. She married Reuben Syhre on Jan. 28, 1939, in Little Falls. They farmed in the Freedhem area and Bernadine was a helpmate to Reuben on the farm as well as raising a garden and caring for their three daughters, Lois, Joyce and Marilyn. In 1958 the family moved to Pine River and Bernadine cooked at the Pine Wood cafe several years. She then cared for her mother in her home until her mother passed away. Bernadine served as the cook for a number of years at Solid Rock Bible Camp near Cushing, Minn. She produced many wonderful meals for many campers and visitors with the help of Reuben and her granddaughters, Kristie and Stacy. Bernadine’s loves in life were her Lord and Savior, her family, her church and reading her Bible. She read the Bible completely through at least 50 times during her life. She also loved to crochet and make warm quilts which she gave away to many thankful recipients.
Bernadine is survived by her daughters, Joyce Mell (Duane), of Apache Junction, Ariz., and Marilyn Norling (Arlan), of Fargo, N.D.; 12 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. Bernadine is also survived by her sister, Lavonna Miller, of Little Falls, Minn.
Bernadine was preceded in death by her husband, Reuben, in 2007; her daughter, Lois, in 2004; her son-in-law, Fred Sommer; her parents; and her sisters, Goldabell and Lucille.
Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, 2012, at the Kline Funeral Home in Pine River with visitation one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in the Freedhem Evangelical Free Cemetery, Freedhem, Minn., at a later time.
