GLENWOOD — Daniel L. Sjodin was born April 28, 1919, in Aitkin, Minn., died Feb. 1, 2012. at Glenwood Village Care Center in Glenwood, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Olaf and Signa Sjodin; son, Dennis Sjodin; grandson, Bryan Rissell; brothers ,George, James, Jerold, Raymond and Robert; and sisters, Elfie, Ethel and Kathryn. He is survived by daughter Diane Rissell of Monticello, Minn.; son Raymond Sjodin of California; granddaughters Rachelle Rissell of Duluth, Minn.;, and Laurel Sjodin of Minneapolis, Minn.; a sister Alice Vivian of Ohio; close friends Lou and Jan Haugen; and many nieces and nephews.
Daniel’s parents once operated the restaurants in the Brainerd and Aikin Bus Depots. He was a Bugle Boy at the age of 14 in the Minnesota National Guard.
During World War II, Lt. Col. Daniel Sjodin, at the age of 24, was a squadron leader of B-24 heavy bombers, the 831st B. Sqdr. He flew 50 missions over Germany and the Ploesti oil fields. Daniel and Jimmy Stewart, the actor, were pilot instructors together in Idaho.
He loved to hunt and fish and enjoyed the outdoors. He also loved to dance. Memorial services will be held at a later date at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Aitkin, Minn.
