NISSWA — Darrell Johnson, age 79, resident of Nisswa, passed away unexpectedly due to health related issues on Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2012, in Foley, Ala. Darrell was born in Clarissa, Minn., on June 20, 1932, to Axel and Ruby (Wiltermuth) Johnson. Darrell was united in marriage to Irene Holscher on Aug. 8, 1955, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Browerville, Minn. He was a member of St. Christopher’s Catholic Church and the American Legion in Nisswa. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. After returning from the service he attended Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis where he studied tool and die.
Darrell worked as a tool & die maker retiring in 1998 after 25 years with McKechnie tooling and engineering in Staples. Darrell and his wife, Irene owned and operated the Agate Lake Resort on Agate Lake from 1972 – 1993. One of Darrell’s favorite pastimes was helping his son with the farm; he also enjoyed mowing grass at Maddens three days a week. Darrell and Irene loved to travel and camp, they enjoyed wintering down south in Florida and along the golf cost in Alabama.
Survivors include his wife, Irene; son, Keith (Debbie) Johnson, of Center City; daughters, Julie Johnson, of Moundsview and Eunice (Tim) Peabody, of Nisswa; grandchildren, Beth Steiger, Megan Snyder, Matt Steiger, Katie Johnson, Anthony Boyer, Sara Boyer, Travis Wright, Emily Peabody, William Peabody, Ellie Peabody and Grace Peabody; three great-grandchildren; brother, Adrien Johnson; two sisters, Marilyn Lundquist and Sandy Larson; many other relatives.
He was preceded in death by two daughters, Margaret “Peggy” Steiger and Kristine Johnson; an infant son, grandchild, Ryan Peabody; and his sister, Anita LeNeave.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held noon on Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2012, at St. Christopher’s Catholic Church in Nisswa with Father George Zeck officiating. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Monday at St. Christopher’s Catholic Church and will continue the hour before services. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Nisswa with military honors provided by Billy Brown American Legion Post 627 in Nisswa.
Memorials preferred to St. Christopher’s Catholic Church.
