Melvin (Mel) Lundeby passed away on Oct. 31, 2011, in Brainerd, Minn., at the age of 83. Melvin was born on Nov. 20, 1927, in Brainerd to George and Maude (Potter) Lundeby. Mel attended the Brainerd rural school district and graduated from Washington High School in 1945. He served in the United States Army from 1946-1947 and in 1947 began working for Red Owl as the store manager first in Princeton, then in Brainerd.
Mel married his childhood sweetheart Shirley (Frisch) Lundeby on June 7, 1951, in Brainerd and together they had four children. Mel built his family home and homestead at Acorn Acres in rural Brainerd.
Mel enjoyed woodworking and had many other interests such as 4-H, antique car club, Paul Bunyan Good Sam camping club, square dancing, traveling, church youth, community service projects, and a lifetime member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church.
Mel is survived by his wife, Shirley, of Brainerd; children, Michael (Elizabeth Petrangelo), Minneapolis, Barry (Betty), of Marshalltown, Iowa, Bruce (Peggy), of Fort Collins, Colo., and Laurel (Warren) Hanlon, Bloomington; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and brother, Robert (Jo Ann), of Brainerd.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, Nov. 4, 2011, at 11 a.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Brainerd. Visitation will be Thursday, Nov. 3, 2011, from 5-8 p.m. at Halvorson-Johnson Funeral Home in Brainerd and one hour prior to the services Friday at the church.
Memorials are preferred to Bethlehem Lutheran Building Foundation.
